Parents of the HS Class of 2014

Congratulations 2018Dad! I wish my S had an acceptance in hand. She should hear from the first school next week. The suspense is killing me. I imagine there is a sense of relief that comes with the first fat envelope.

2018dad- Congrats on SC Presidential Scholar!
I had a glimmer of hope that S14 would fall into the early merit pack, but it is not looking that way. S11 is 3rd year and S14 sure wants to join him, so we will stay positive for March acceptance.
If that doesn’t work out, for sure there will be other good choices.

@Overtheedge
Thanks. Hang in there. But you are absolutely right. It’s a big relief. It’s a relief that she got accepted to a school that she’s willing to attend and if she gets the half-tuition, then we can afford it. I have this recurring dream that she got denied to everywhere. Also, if anything, it’s a validation that she’s somewhat competitive to the other schools that she applied to.

@Minnymom
Thank you.
Don’t lose hope and you are right, stay positive!

Hi,
While not scholarship dollars, DD did get an envelope today. She is a candidate for the Presidential Scholars program 2014. It was a pleasant surprise. I have not seen anyone posting that these letters went out yet, but maybe it’s because this new site is not easy for me to navigate. :slight_smile:

@calla1 I would try to erase your cookies (or at least the cookies related to CC) – that seems to have fixed different kinds of problems.

So, S14 got his second acceptance today, so now he has enough to require a choice!

We are making progress - 4 schools have been dropped off the list, that leaves 3 where she’s been admitted, 1 she hasn’t heard from, 2 deferrals.

We also got a Presidential Scholars candidate letter today, which was a nice surprise as we count down the eight weeks left before we expect to see any college letters…

@kroplady, DS also received the US Presidential Scholars invitation letter today. I wasn’t going to post it until I see your comments asking about it. Yes, it was a nice surprised since we didn’t expect it and almost mistaken it as a junk mail. :-O

@2014ProfDad, just saw you also received the invitation. Good luck!

Congratulations @20168dad!
@Eyemamom, making progress is good.

We don’t have any news other than UC Merced sending an information package.
I guess some of the kids will will hear form UCLA this week.

Go2girl also was invited to the USC Presidential Scholarship interview today! What a fabulous way to start the week! Hopefully all these kids will meet up o campus! Congratulations to all!

My DS also got the US Presidential Scholars letter. His guidance counselor had told him today to look for it. I don’t think he’ll actually do the application though. Will your kids do it? My older DS was also a candidate, but did not apply.

Congrats on all the new acceptances!

I am glad that @go2mom mentioned that the scholarship was from USC. I was starting to feel left out of things, on my son’s behalf! Since he didn’t apply to USC and probably wouldn’t have qualified for a scholarship anyway, I will now just be happy for the opportunity provided to all of your students. I hope they are all successful in their pursuit. How funny though that so many of you are on this forum together! Small world…

I am not sure that DD has it in her to write another essay. :-?
Congrats to all the candidates!!!

My daughter will do it. I was a semifinalist in the same state back in my day, and she is always willing to try to outdo dad! But given that there is no scholarship involved, it seems like a lot of work…

Congrats to all those with such good news today from USC. . . Fight On!

Ha, we haven’t even looked at the application so don’t know what’s involved. %-(
In fact, DS was his school nominee but didn’t advance at the State level. Apparently, there are two paths to nomination and DS got it again from the US Dept of Education. Humm… I guess they trumped the state commissioner.

Most of the nominees are from test scores; the state commissioner gets to add just a couple of nominees of each gender. The Presidential Scholar application looks like a real pain – a lot of things that need to be mailed, with a recommendation of using fed ex, and a warning that any violations of the instructions (e.g., using the wrong font) or late documents from the school will disqualify the applicant.

Thanks for that info. If you did that on the “old” format, you would be directed to page 1 of the thread. :frowning:

At least the old coding for quotes is still the same!

Woohoo! A technical victory as I successfully changed my avatar. Thank you to those offering advice. I am so not a tech person.

Congratulations to those receiving good news, and good luck to the scholarship contenders!

I had a former student nominated for the Presidential Scholar. She was a great kid and an awesome writer. She did all the essays, putting aside other school work, etc. The night she went to hit the button to upload everything (it was just before the deadline), she had a glitch and the system was too busy to handle her submission. She came in the next morning and told me about it. I asked if I could do anything. She told me to promise that I would go along with the lie that she submitted everything. I agreed. Why? Because the principal and superintendent were more concerned with this than she was! They wanted to boast about it. She was a very humbled kid, a very busy kid, too. They were pushing so hard to get her to submit everything because they wanted to say they had a Presidential Scholar. I felt so badly for her. That’s my one experience with the program.
