Parents of the HS Class of 2014

@CT1417 That works for threads, but not whole forums (like, say Eckerd or U Rochester - two of personal interest in my family). Under the “old” system those forums would show up with a yellow dot when there were new posts of any sort in them. Now I have to actually click on each to know.

@eyemamom - Is the one being visited the clear favorite so far? If not, I’d probably still compare at least a couple. I’d drop any truly out of the running on paper. BTDT

@creekland–got it! Since I never knew how to subscribe to an entire forum, I didn’t realize what I am now missing.

I find it annoying that even when I do click through to the forum of the university I follow, I cannot see the latest post date stamp w/o going into the forum.

@eyemamom, I always tell DS, never say never. If DS likes the school he visited, I would encourage him to visit the next one (or few) that are already scheduled. If they are great then we have more hard choices to make. If they are not as good, then we would feel even better about the first choice.

So relieved, just sent FAFSA for both kids. First and hopefully only time doing this for 2 at once! Going to relax and enjoy my book club this evening. :D/

@Agentninetynine We’re in Michigan. They didn’t have a snow day today but they really should have. The high school kids’ buses were a little late but the middle school kids missed their entire first period and some elementary school kids were waiting for their buses for more than an hour this morning. That’s just crazy. Frantic? It’s not just him missing- nobody is there, so there’s not really anything to be frantic about. He’s had a lot more time to get homework done!

Brrrrr…just returned from a long, cold day in Seattle. Waited 2.5 hours unsuccessfully in the bus tunnel for a ride home. All buses were full. Called husband and he drove down to pick us up. Yay for a warm car with the heat turned up to boiling. It’ll take a while to thaw out. Even with the cold, we made lots of great memories and took a million photos. I couldn’t tell who was more excited, the crowd or the players. Sheer joy. Marshawn Lynch was the first Seahawk player to appear, Russell Wilson was in the middle of the pack, and Richard Sherman was the last player on the parade route.

No question about the value of missing an early release day at school. D will have many fun memories she can share with her family in years to come. It’s been a crazy week with the Super Bowl, D’s 18th birthday, and today’s parade. Glad it’s coming to an end. I need to get back to work! Cheers!

Finally finished the FAFSA & CSS for DS’14…Now, only have to complete both for DS’12!!!

I still have to do FAFSA and CSS for DS’11 because his taxes aren’t done yet. But his aren’t due until May, so no rush.

Congrats to NCDad’s S on the UNC acceptance.

Welcome aboard 3tallblondes!

Another snow day for D today. We got about 8 inches last night. Now that it has stopped, we have to get ready for the cold air again.

D learned yesterday afternoon that she did not make it to the finalist pool for the Villanova Presidential Scholarship. They stated that there were 1,960 nominations/applications and they only selected 18 finalists. That’s about 1 in 110. Not the best odds but it was worth a shot. She did have a very good alumni interview for another scholarship at the same school and was pleased with the way it went. She may also have gained a new babysitting client from the interview!

@AvonHSDad: Sorry to hear your DD didn’t make the finalist pool. Fingers crossed for the next scholarship!

I have a question for all y’all… what does it mean if a coach contacts a prospective student? Does this bode well for admittance?

Just a quick post…I’ve lost touch with everyone since the CC changes went into effect. Lost my notifications to subscribed forums and threads and no mobile access at all. Haven’t really had the time or inclination in the last few weeks to figure out the new protocols. Wouldn’t it have made more sense to make these changes in the summer when things are a bit slower? Just wondering out loud…

Hope to catch up on pages and pages this weekend?! In the meantime…D accepted to UMaryland, Penn State, UDelaware, UAlabama, Tulane, IndianaU, MiamiU (OH), and Wisconsin. Still waiting to hear from UMiami (FL). Trying hard to keep my mouth mostly shut–varying degrees of success depending on the day!

Congrats to those getting good news, condolences and hugs to others.

We are 97% there - DS went to Middle Tennessee State last weekend and auditioned for music minor/scholarship. They told him he could be accepted as a music performance major but that’s not what he wants. Got an e-mail on Tuesday confirming he is accepted as a Recording Industry Major/Music Minor and scholarship info will be forthcoming. He had a great visit and enjoyed meeting faculty and students. He is now researching additional scholarships through MTSU and locally. So glad to be almost at the end of this road!

Congrats Cheermom20878! Must be wonderful to have so many options. Very cool.

@Agentninetynine, after FB season was over our S was contacted by a handful of football coaches but all are small LAC schools and all D3, which means no scholarship $$. The football teams all dress 100 kids or so, so getting on the field can be tough. The more we think about it the more it feels like its simply recruting students for the school. S is not that interested in Football in college, so he has already politely told the coaches no. He still has some baseball coaches “pinging” him but it feels the same - and most of them he views as safety’s.

Congrats to NCDad and others with new acceptances since I last stopped by. We did one accepted students day last week, and I think that school has slid further down K2’s list. We have another next week, then K2 has a portfolio interview the following week at a third school. No more mention of the school that deferred her to RD, so I think (I hope?) she realizes it was a poor fit.

D’14 signed up for cheer tryouts last night. Folks, if you knew me (especially the old hs/college me), you would laugh so hard. Me? Parent of a college cheerleader? Karma’s got a real sense of humor.

Two more tuition exchange offers, both of which she’ll turn down for school number one. I feel kind of bad about that, but keep reminding myself that someone on the waiting list will be very, very happy about that spot opening up.

D14 has applied to some universities in England. Yesterday one sent her an invitation to an event in Oslo. Yes, the one in Norway. I don’t think she’ll make it.

Hi everyone! Just reporting back on a whirlwind trip to UGA and Clemson. My D liked UGA a lot, but loved Clemson (as some on this board predicted!). She liked the more rural, laid-back atmosphere. We visited the on campus ice cream store (yum!) and it was very helpful that we had a tour guide from the Northeast, who was the first and only student from his high school to attend Clemson. Got a great perspective on attending Clemson as an out-of-stater. I’m 90% sure she will select Clemson - one other school to visit that I think she will like, but not as much. So glad we are all moving closer to the end of this journey!

Sounds like a very productive trip Gigem86! Must feel great seeing the finish line so close. Congrats!
