Parents of the HS Class of 2014

Congratulations to gotogirl/ mom! So exciting!

So exciting to hear all this good news - congrats everyone! I feel like things will start accelerating now & some decisions will start coming in. Exciting times!

Murmur - congrats to your daughter! Very exciting …I continue to love hearing the great news! Keep it coming everyone…

We had a great day at UVM today…it was very crowed over 900 people attended accepted student day. Apparently, only 65 showed up last week in the snow storm so people who were suppose to come last week just showed up today! It all worked out- it was very well organized - the only issue was that it was really warm inside but we managed.

My son is very interested - he said that he must be easily influenced because the last school he visits becomes his favorite school! …I am glad he is keeping an opened mind because FA will play a major role in the decision.

@go2mom - WOW - just… WOW! You must be SO proud. (And in the back of your mind…Cha Ching), =D>

@go2mom Congrats!!

@onlyonemom, we had a great day at UVM as well. My son is also quite interested. I think it’s his #2 choice now and he said he’d be happy to go there instead of his #1 if the money is significantly different (which unfortunately I suspect it will be). As an instate NMF, he’ll get a full tuition scholarship at UVM if he attends, so very affordable for us! I hadn’t heard how many people were there, but we thought they handled the crowds very well. The day seemed to run quite smoothly. Which college is your son admitted to? Mine is in CEMS (Engineering and Mathematical Sciences). I wonder if we saw one another today ;-)

@murmur - congratulations on D’s acceptance to Ohio State

@ onlyonemom and @mathmomvt - glad to hear you had a good visit to UVM. It is nice to have a lot of great options.

Got up early to drop Son '14 off for his sectional track meet. He is running the 1600 as well as two relays. So, yes, he is much better from his bout with the flu and the cold that followed. He really hopes the two relays get through, so his teammates can join him at states next weekend. He’s already qualified in the 1000 and 1600.

@AvonHSDad - Awesome list, thanks!!!

Question for anyone if y’all dont mind…we are looking to move to Pennsylvania within a couple years anywhere near Route 80 or Route 78 so that we can drive into NYC for employment (how be it a 1.5 hour drive…we are okay with this because it would not be 5 days a week). Can anyone recommend towns anywhere near that where the high school systems are great…public or private high schools (paramount as an OCD college person). Suburban to country area with or without land; neighborhoods or quaint roads. Any thoughts?

I

@mathmomVT My son is in the school of Arts and Science - Neuroscience major. He said UVM is as a top choice but he still has 8 colleges to hear from…Originally, Colby was his top choice ( he was deferred to ED) now he is not so sure…he wants to see what his options are before he decides. He realizes now that at a larger University he will have an opportunity to do more research. UVM is the largest school he applied too -I think the next largest is UROC or Brandeis. I am glad he doesn’t have one favorite.

Burlington is just beautiful…I just hope we get a good FA package.

Wow!! I’m 67 posts behind! I sure miss being able to read on my phone. :(

@onlyonemom it’s great that your son doesn’t have his heart set on any one place – being pragmatic about comparing the money situations is ideal!

I doubt UVM is very generous for out-of-state financial aid, unfortunately (though I don’t know this through any particular experience). Was he accepted into the honors college? I think they said at the honors reception that honors kids sometimes get better packages.

Glad you guys liked UVM! We were at UMass and it was cold and dreary! DD decided for sure that it was not fur her. But she met up with a couple of different friends for different events so it was fine. And I got to see DS’11 for a few minutes and give him his new lease after we had signed it. And the traffic home wasn’t bad. Plus DD keeps finding out more about a major that’s interesting to her so all in all it was a good day, just not the right school for her.

But - she just received an early write acceptance to Smith! She’s ecstatic!! I’m just hoping that some scholarship money will come with it later so it will be possible!! But at least tonight she’s happy and working on scholarship applications! She was worried because it was a small envelope and surprised it had good news. Nice to see a smiling face tonight!

If anyone has a child nominated for a Stamps scholarship somewhere and would like some info, pm me. My D13 is a Stamps scholar at University of Mississippi.

Congrats Akmom!

Hi everyone - D and I have had a really great east coast visit. Auditions at both Westminster Choir College and Temple went very well. We spent a full day at Temple’s Boyer School of Music, attending classes & a choir rehearsal & chatting with the Honors Program folks. The music school seems terrific, and her GPA/test scores qualify her for full tuition. We really enjoyed WCC as well. After her audition this morning, we were done with “business” and spent the rest of the day at the Franklin Institute & dinner in Philly’s chinatown. Weather was spectacular for February - high 50’s & sunny. Flying home tomorrow on a bit of a high!

It is so good to see everyone on an upswing just like our weather these past few days with good visits and acceptance days. Sorry for those still waiting or on the indecision trail. I have been there with you, it can seem lonely and rocky. We are all here.

I’m playing catch-up from getting so far behind in reading posts!

Congratulations again to all those who have made a decision. I remember either last year or the year before they started a list for the Class of xxxx decisions. Does anyone want to start that? It would be one that would just get copied and added to as decisions are made.

@2016BarnardMom – Congratulations on the promotion & raise!! Good for you!

@momreads – hope your DS is feeling better by now! Very mature of him to take responsibility of the forgotten homework and accepting whatever grade the teacher gave him. (and hope today’s race went well!)

@akmom – congrats on the Elks MVStudent Scholarship!! And congrats on the Smith good news!

@go2mom – WOW!! Congratulations on the Vanderbilt scholarship!! So I guess her mind is made up on where she is going? =D>

@murmur – congrats on the Ohio State Biomedical Science program!!

@GertrudeMcfuzz – sounds like a wonderful trip!

I made all the reservations for our spring break (late March) trip to Michigan. I’m getting really excited. DS will be touring U of Michigan and Kettering. He’s received scholarships to both, but not near enough at either so hoping there is more $$ on the table somewhere. I know with Kettering, they encourage the kids to use their co-op earnings to help pay for school. He also received a scholarship yesterday from another school that is high on his list – pretty substantial, but still not full tuition. He has applied for a presidential scholarship at this school, so still waiting for word on that one.

@GertrudeMcfuzz- great news and look forward to hearing where D decides to go…we will be on SS indecision for probably most of April depending on where S gets accepted - half the schools he applied to we did not visit so it will be an interesting journey. On the upside, S really liked UVM ( DH and I did too) so he has a top choice acceptance at this point …now to wait out the month and see all his options and FA…

Beady Mom- your trip to Michigan sounds exciting!

@onlyonemom - Temple is currently riding high, but we do have to wait for all acceptances & financial packages. It’s good to have a front runner though, & know that acceptance is likely if not confirmed yet! Glad your son has one place he likes & is accepted - that takes a lot of the pressure off!!
