Parents of the HS Class of 2014

It was cold and rainy at UVM also. Definitely not the weather to attract someone to Vermont, but since we’re from VT, we know all about the weather anyhow. Congrats on Smith!

^^^I agree about the weather but we are from New England - 14 years in Maine. If we let the weather deter us we we would never go outside! I know how quickly the weather can change so it is never a factor unless it is too hot - hate the heat. My son loves the rain and thought Friday was the perfect weather! LOL I told him he should live in Ireland and I will not be surprised if he ends up in the Northwest.

We are back to snow today! Was able to get all our hotel reservations made between now I and October. The face of spring break is now changed as well. The weather this is so strange it is going to be hard for kids to make decisions based on that - dreary and cold in most places.

@BeadyMom: There are a couple of threads for Class of 2018 decisions pinned to the top of the Parents Forum. One is a list, and one where you can comment.

@beadymom: The official decisions list for 2018 is here:
<a href=“Class of 2018: List of Acceptances (H.S. Class of 2014) - Parents Forum - College Confidential Forums”>Class of 2018: List of Acceptances (H.S. Class of 2014) - Parents Forum - College Confidential Forums;

But it became problematic with the software changes, as it is now above the limit for the size of a post. Thus, I started a Google doc that anybody can add to. The Google doc is here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1ZxUwgbCqcCpq4L_2L4lAhqcKQAN0AyGHDAjf1rDX9rI/edit?usp=sharing</a></p>

Congrats Akmom on the Smith acceptance!
@Gertrude – sounds like a great trip.
Have fun in Michigan, Beadymom.

So wish we could plan to a spring break trip but kids are out the last week of March and we won’t have all the decisions by then.

@AvonDad - I’d like to book an outside cabin on the USS Indecision!

I’ve got to ask . . . Is anybody else feeling this way?

Right now, d is holding three tuition exchange offers. She has deposited at a school and now will notify the other two that she won’t be taking the offers. Tuition exchange is an employee benefit and so this group does not adhere to a May 1 decision. Students on the waiting list need to be offered the spots D will decline. We know this going in.

Anyway, I’m having moments of panic over opportunities lost. Both those d is turning down seem like a better fit. They’re just a little quirkier (like d) and little more intellectual, and in cities. D really is a person who can be happy anywhere. So, is what I’m experiencing like cold feet before the wedding? Once those offers are declined and someone on the waiting list is offered a spot, there’s no backsies.

@mimama & @crowlady - thank you, I’m familiar with those threads. I had seen in the Class of 2012 thread where they listed where the students actually committed to.

example: <a href=“Parents of the HS Class of 2012 - Original - #27226 by saintfan - Class of 20xx Community - College Confidential Forums”>http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/class-20xx-community/658245-parents-of-the-hs-class-of-2012-original-p1816.html</a></p>

I don’t think we have near the number of posters that Class of 2012, but it would be nice to know if other students are going to the same school in the fall - make connections now. :slight_smile: From the list that now exists, you see potential matches, but you don’t know whether the other student committed to the same school or not.

I see they also had a launch date/countdown list, too!

@akmom - congratulations on D’s acceptance to Smith!

@ Gertrudemcfuzz - sounds like you are getting closer to a decision!

@onlyonemom - so glad to hear that S has an acceptance from a top choice. I was so relieved when D received her first acceptance from a top choice school. It is a good feeling, or rather, in my case, was a good feeling. Unfortunately, an alien arrived with D’s acceptance letter and has taken up residence in her body. In addition to developing senioritis, she neglected to have mid-year reports sent to two of the schools to which she applied. So much for leaving her options open. Ugh!

@beadymom - your trip sounds exciting! I hope the $ works out for you.

@crowlady - thank you for creating the google doc so everyone can post their results. Is there also an attending thread/doc ?

@Ordinarylives - I’m sure it is just pre-wedding gitters! If she is a kid that can be happy anywhere, then she will do great with the school she deposited! Congrats to her for making a decision!!

@beadymom Aha, I confused the acceptances with the decisions! I admit we’re so far from that it hasn’t occurred to me yet. A decisions list is likely to be too long for the limit also. I suppose that you could just BOLD the entry in the existing Google doc or you could start another.

@overtheedge the acceptances discussions are here <a href=“Class of 2018: List of Acceptances (H.S. Class of 2014) - Parents Forum - College Confidential Forums”>http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/parents-forum/1549395-class-of-2018-list-of-acceptances-h-s-class-of-2014.html</a> and I thought there was another one but I can’t find it now.

The results are in. Son '14 spilled his guts in his anchor lap of the 4 by 800 meter relay and … they are going to states!!! He was so excited when he called me to let me know. This is the only way two of his teammates will see the state meet, so he is so glad that they qualified. So was their coach, who rarely says anything about their performance. Meanwhile, Son '14 finished fourth in the 1600. Not his best performance, but he still does not feel 100 percent. So he’ll run in the relay, 1000 and 1600 at states. The big disappointment was that he ran the anchor on the 4 by 4 relay, turned in an incredible performance (we saw the video) but the team finished a second or so out of qualifying. He and the other members of the relay were not too happy with one teammate, who seemed the dog his leg (again, videos do not lie). He claimed he was tired. Well, there will others who would have run in his place! Oh well.

There is talk of more winter yuck later in the week. Just what we need, another snow day here in VA.

Congrats to all those acceptances and decisions made.

Meanwhile, Son '14’s older brother got law school acceptances from UVA and Georgetown. Still waiting on three others, then, we celebrate!

@momreads- Awesome! Congratulations on states!

Congratulations to both of your sons @momreads! It sounds like your family had a wonderful weekend!

@beadymom - in 2012 two other kids went to Rochester with my son. He ended up being 2 doors down from one of them and they ended up becoming besties! I became friends with the mom. This year I don’t see anyone else going to Auburn. It’s funny - how will I find out second hand information?

@momreads - congrats on states! D’s bf is a runner but he isn’t going to do it in college. Congrats on the law school admits. I can’t imagine going through 2 at once!

Eyemamom, fortunately, I am not picking up the tab for law school. Older son has to find his own way on that one, and he knows it. We did pay for his applications, and we will file FAFSA and NeedAccess for him. And of course, we’ll help him pack up his stuff from his apartment, if needed.

As for Auburn, one of my fellow teachers and her husband are Auburn grads. Her son is a junior. He hopes to follow them there and in Navy ROTC. There have been days when she has worn her Auburn sweatshirt, and I have worn my Alabama one.

Congratulations momreads!

D is done with the Robotics build season and so happy about this year robot. A big turn around for her, from her failed design in sophomore year to now where it works really well. Now, hoping that the Robot does well in the tournament. Amazing how many man hours it takes to build the robot and then takes even more manpower to compete in the tournaments. I shouldn’t say “man hours” or “manpower” that will make D rile up, girls put in a lot of effort into this Robot. Any new gender-neutral words?

@GetrudeMcFuzz - I should think so! Wow - qualified for full tuition! Congratulations!!

Congrats to akmom124 and all others receiving good news!

@momreads - so happy for your Son '14 and his teammates! And for your older son’s law school acceptances!

@ChrysanthMum - Congrats to your D on her successful robot design! Best wishes for the tournament!

Congrats to Akmom re Smith! What a beautiful place with such a rich history!.
Momreads: Congrats on states!

@momreads Congrats on all fronts, you must be so proud.

@ChrysanthMum – I have no idea if our robot even functions. Bag and tag snuck up on our team. I just realized that my S probably has an It’s Academic playoff TV taping so will miss part of the competition. Last year they needed him to toss frisbees at the end, this year I’m not sure they need anybody other than drivers.
