<p>Been out of the loop for about 10 days.</p>
<p>Son ‘14 and I went to SC to visit my folks. Had a nice time, except I found myself at my parents’ doctor’s office. Had problems with my back, knee and hip. A shot seems to have helped a great deal, but we had a heart-to-heart, the doctor and I, and I plan to enroll in a wellness program here at home. Need to lose weight and feel better. Came back here, and had a root canal done on a tooth that went bad. So I need that wellness program!</p>
<p>Son '14, meanwhile, has been running and training for the upcoming cross country season. He gets up at 6 or so in the morning and runs since temps are in the mid 90s here. While down at my folks, we did hit the outlets, and Son '14 got new tennis shoes (his grandparents offered to pay for those), a spring-like jacket and some nice shirts. I picked up more socks for him. He probably needs another pair of jeans for school. He’s set on shorts and t-shirts. He will spend a night or two with his brother next week as they have tickets to a baseball game in DC, so I can pack up a bunch of things, since we are bringing stuff down during orientation and leaving it in storage for a month. It will make move in easier. </p>
<p>Speaking of move in, add my son to the list. His is Aug. 13 at UAH (early move-in for cross country).</p>

<p>We are starting to plan D’s “Bon Voyage” party. We didn’t have a grad party - decided to do this instead. Since she’s headed to Temple, we’re making it Philly-themed. I’m planning to serve hoagies, stromboli, (not sure if I can pull off cheesesteaks, but I’ll do some research on how the steak part is made), Tastykakes, & cheesecake made with, what else, Philadelphia cream cheese. This will be pretty exotic fare for San Diego. We have a local chain called Jersey Mike’s that sells Tastykakes, so I’ll go load up there. Other suggestions welcome! We’re also planning a trivia contest with things like How do you pronounce “Schuylkill”? and What is a mummer? Should be fun!</p>
<p>GertrudeMcFuzz: Love it! My husband works in PA during the summer, so he does see Philly quite often. Ask a trivia question or two about Philly sports, too. </p>
<p>Pin the crack on the Liberty Bell!</p>
<p>Get some movie posters from the Rocky series with the art museum steps. Apparently there is now also a Rocky statue. </p>
<p>Have everyone sign a declaration of good luck wishes for your daughter. </p>

<p>@GertrudeMcFuzz At some point, you’ll need to play the song Philadelphia Freedom! I had fun with BarnardGirl’s New York themed grad party. Maybe you could check on catering prices for philly cheese steaks? A party sub size one or something? Sliced by the inch? You can get frozen kits to make them but those kits are kind of pricey and usually have enough to make 6 sandwiches. </p>
<p>I took MichiganBoy to open his checking account on Wednesday. I think he feels very grown up now 
He will get his first paycheck on Tuesday. He is almost done with this Thank You notes from graduation. He only had 7 or 8 to go I think.</p>
<p>BarnardGirl’s financial aid package info came in this week too. It has been a huge unknown how that was going to be with an additional child in college and it was very good news. I can swing this. Phew. </p>

<p>Got an email from FAFSA saying they had corrected D’s form. Went on line and somehow they are saying we contributed nearly $30K to a retirement plan per box 12 on our W-2’s. All of our box 12’s are blank as there were no contributions of this type. It raised the EFC by thousands. What the ??? I updated it with a the same zero we started with and re-submitted. This could become a real nuisance if they try to reverse it again.</p>
<p>Just returned home from a big family vacation in DC and caught up with pages of what’s happening with Class of 2014 here.</p>
<p>DS just showed me a letter from National Merit with a last notification attempt - if we don’t confirm his acceptance of National Merit scholarship in 10 days, it will not be paid out. Apparently, they sent a letter requesting for DS’ confirmation a while back. DS said that he never got it (Judging from his room, who knows if it’s in there). Needless to say, we made DS confirming the acceptance right then and there this time. Phew!!!</p>
<p>Like some of your DC’s, DS isn’t motivated to do much this summer. It drives me nuts on one hand but on the other hand I am OK that he will have some down time before college. Now I just need to make sure he doesn’t miss important letters.</p>
<p>Anybody else tempted to contact relatives in other states to get AP scores earlier? </p>
<p>Well, it’s 8:10 am out here on the left coast. We logged in to the College Board site, clicked the link to ‘AP Scores’, only to find a two-line message that said, ‘We’re experiencing heavy volume from students trying to get their scores. Please check back later today’. </p>
<p>Grrrr.</p>
