Parents of the HS Class of 2015

Good luck for all coming down to the wire!

@shoboemom - i’m so sorry to hear about your mom. Thoughts and prayers headed your way.

Try not to beat yourself up about the financial aspect of your D and the college choice. So many of our kids are more mature than we give them credit for. She will recognize the sacrifices you made to give her the options she has. And once she settles in and makes friends, all will be well in her world again!

@GoAskDad - I’m playing catch up on posts, but schools really should roll out the red carpet for NM kids. Settling up a sit in for a prospect really shouldn’t be that difficult and it would have thrown up a red flag in my world. Hopefully, by the time the sun comes up tomorrow, y’all will have a decision!

Hang in there @ITBgirl.

Any passenger requiring leis, your official Lei Maker has relocated to the the Lido deck. Where are the fruity drinks? My D has made a decision! She will be attending Oberlin this fall.

Congratulations on the latest decisions!!

Oberlin sounds great @Daisychain. I know my D loved the things they mailed out!

Thank you for the kind thoughts about my mom, and the support about my worry over the college decision. I have always had a hard time letting go of options…always preferring to keep my options open as much as possible, so it’s this darn looming deadline, in the back of my head whispering, sometimes shouting “Last chance…are you SURE?”

I am not one who usually thinks everything happens for a reason, but that is really a feeling I get about D landing at this college, that is so much more affordable, and so much closer to home.

Congrats to all whose kids have come to decisions in recent days! I don’t think I’ve kept up with all of that, but it’s great to see. As for a few others, well, I don’t mean to sound alarmist but . . . .

Tomorrow is college tee-shirt day, right?

And just as land comes in sight we have a college commitment: University of Southern California! Looks like I will be exploring L.A. beyond the lovely collection of hotel conference rooms surrounding LAX.

Congratulations, vistajay!

I got so many communications from the oldest his first semester at school I had to give them a nickname-TODs!

Texts of Doom! Oh yes they were wonderful so great that finally his father had to talk to him about them! Most of the disasters passed quickly and he was happily off doing the next thing and I was left in a state of almost constant distress! They are venting-mostly I guess. I would never ignore them but it’s good to be prepared for them. He did admit recently that no one does angst quite like them! It is a big transition for everyone it’s OK!

I dreaded him leaving! This one not so much! But this time will leave me with the dreaded empty nest. Like many of you our marriage had life has been centered on the kids and their activities and the friends we have from those activities. I decided a few weeks ago to actually make plans with people we haven’t had the time to see in years! There is a life after children at home. But it is OK to feel like you do-it really is a huge change but in the end I bet you will be amazed at how much more fun it can be!

Is today the due date-is it 11:59:59 PM today or do they have all day tomorrow?

Cheers!

Last night we had a nice long talk with S who has narrowed down to two schools. He hates to say no to either one, so we may be the last ones on the boat! Both schools are a plane ride away. One has better weather than the other! Academically, they are pretty equal…we advised him to listen to his heart because he can’t make a wrong decision. The decision part is agonizing…but we know once he commits, he’ll be excited and thrilled to begin the next chapter of his life. I could use a frozen margarita, please. Send over the cabana boys!!!

@Pepper03 - I had the same question about the time and day the decision is due but haven’t seen a response yet. S did get his enrollment in but we are also waiting on a wait list school so could be down to the wire.

At your service, @Felicita, and everyone else’s. Home stretch everyone!

http://■■■■■■■■■■/#decisiontime_afsgz I assumed that the time was midnight tonight. Less than a day to go, everybody!

To the people contemplating complicated long distance college logistics – Did you know that you can go online to Walmart.com, order stuff to your heart’s content, and then use a search box to put in your school’s zipcode, and request that all the stuff you ordered be boxed up and ready and waiting for you to pick up when you arrive in the area on a specific date? I was kind of stunned to find this out, and when our daughter was looking at colleges in Florida (we live in Virginia), we actually walked around the nearby Walmart and thought about doing just that some day. Turns out she’s staying a little closer to home but this sounds like an awesome service!

My son figured before midnight between the day before and the day was safe (midnight October 31st for Nov. 1st), but he ended up submitting his CA on November 1st, the due date, because some electronic forms were delayed and it was on time.

I would hope the same thing for sending in deposits/decisions - at least May 1st is a Friday not a Saturday!

Momzie, I believe that Bed Bath and Beyond, Target, and JC Pennies has the pick up at s certain date service also. I am checking into these options because D will be ~2,500 miles away from home.

@vistajay, you can walk from USC to see the Space Shuttle at the CA Science Center across the street (not to mention all the other museums that are right here).

@vistajay Ooooh, ooooh, the Space Shuttle! Endeavour - yes, that exhibit is great! If you are there, do see it - it’s wonderful.

@albert69, they apparently rent out the space (sorry, no pun intended) for events: my D’s prom is being held there. How cool is that ?

@momzie: you can do that at Bed Bath & Beyond, too. The website has information regarding the store closest to your DC’s school for the pickup. D15’s school is having a “Shop for College” event at a local BBB tonight where all students will get 20% off their total purchase. We’ll be going. I’m going to try to get much as I can but - sadly - will not be able to get sheets just yet. Three of the four freshman dorms have twinXL beds. One does not. Since we don’t know the dorm to which she’ll be assigned, I can’t buy the bedding just yet. I’ll take care of the other stuff, like towels and desk lamps.

One of the (slight) benefits of having gone through this with D09 is that I view the college “to buy” lists with a great deal of skepticism. For example, I know that I will not have to buy her an iron as she has never ironed one thing in her entire life and will probably not pick up that habit now. We also have some stuff from D09 that we can recycle for D15, like a small fan.
