@shellz, I’m right there with you about wanting to rewind and relive some of these wonderful years. @twogirls, I cry at that song, too.
With baccalaureate and commencement approaching, I know the tears will flow even though I will try hard not to cry. I’m so proud of my daughter, but at the same time I want to hold her close and keep her home with us.
For kids turning 18, yes parents lose access to medical records and other HIPAA stuff such as mail order prescriptions and so on.
We found that EVERY place has their own set of forms, so if your child just has a pediatrician, and most see them until they are out of college, they might just give you the form next time you bring your child in.
My son has several doctors, and so far each time he goes they are asking him if he wants to sign the form for us (then we have to sign to. It’s easier because his parents aren’t divorced, I can imagine if they are and both parents want access, the child needs to get an extra copy for the non-custodial parent.
(this is true about friends and other relatives as well - I coordinate for my dad so I have permission to get his records - important because he doesn’t have email and everything is going electronic. My aunt signed the same form for her friend who had no known relatives, so she could coordinate her care (her friend had early-stage dementia))
Hey everybody, I’m back from encampment. It was great. I’ll read through the posts that I’ve missed tomorrow. I got my room assignment - it was waiting in my WSU inbox. I got a suite, 4 rooms 2 bathrooms. I’m happy! Right now I’m listed with 2 other suitemates; I’ll email them tomorrow.
@shellz @twogirls
As D is not going through the graduation ceremony, I will not have (get?) to deal with that happy-sad emotion in front of everyone. I did it when I took her for summer school and then orientation. It really hit me then. I’m sure I’ll get to go through it again in August, when the college years “officially” start.
Welcome back @albert69 … I hope the encampment was a success!! D2 has been reluctant to get in touch with her current listed roommate because the name has already changed once since she was initially notified. I would imagine that’s fairly common (especially at larger schools) since a fair number of students send in housing applications to more than one school before deciding on a final destination. I guess it’s a fine line for her between wanting to make sure the person you reach out to will actually be your roommate while not appearing to be “standoff-ish”. :-?? Silly me…here I am thinking it’s common sense and politeness to say “hey, it looks like we might be living together for the next year so I though I’d introduce myself.” What the heck was I thinking? 8-}
S has his overnight orientation next Weds/Thurs. He’s pretty nervous about it, but hopefully he’ll feel comfortable enough to be somewhat sociable and have some fun with it.
Yeah, welcome back, @albert69! I’m having the same conversation with my S, @Wolverine86 – he doesn’t want to seem weird by contacting his roommate, but it seems like common sense and courtesy to me.
That moment…
When you see your first bursar bill. You knew it was coming. There were no errors. You decided you could afford it. But still a shock nonetheless.
@Cameron121 … It’s that same feeling you get when you write the check for a sizeable downpayment on a car or house purchase. Your hand shakes when you have to write it…but you know it’s an overall positive in the long run.
Surprised to receive housing notification yesterday via e-mail as officially it’s supposed to be July 31st. S got his first choice - @Home LLC single room. Would love to be able to all out celebrate all this news - can’t wait for that calculus grade to stop overshadowing everything.
Adding a roommate “slant” - (thanks for the heads up @singermom4 ) I asked S’15 to check his email, which he rarely does, to see if his room and roommate assignment came in. He said “nope” - he checked his UMN account. So, I asked to him to check his “main” email. After about 2 minutes of verbal banter, I wore him down. (“why would they send it here?! what’s the point of having a school email?..” =; ) Anyway, he got it. Got his LLC confirmed :D/ and roommates name, but no room information. Email said; that will be coming snail mail before end of July. But his LLC occupies a floor in his 1st choice dorm - so, there really is no mystery.
Reality bites!!! Yesterday D was ill with the "rub my back and legs sickness"and fever…do you remember how many times when they were young that you said to yourself “I hope they hurry up and get over it”? Well, yesterday it dawn on me that she may need her mom next year to rub her legs and back when she is sick, and I won’t be there…
So one of my suitemates replied - the person is a biology major with a biomedical emphasis and is getting an associates in physics, is messy too and plans to study a lot, yay!
D graduates this Wed! And she found out yesterday that she is salutatorian which is making her more stressed since it means she has to make a speech at senior dinner and introduce the speaker at graduation. She is freaking out.
Thanks @mdcmom! After graduation stress is over I am sure she will be happy.
Ironically being sal had no impact on her college apps as another kid was #2 for most of HS but probably got senioritis this year.
My twins have to give short speeches at graduation as Val and Sal. They haven’t a clue what to say. It’s been many years since I’ve been to a graduation so I’m no help. Could any of you share any advice your children were given if they gave speeches this yr? Or from those who have already attended graduations this year - what works? what to avoid? Thanks so much.
