Parents of the HS Class of 2016 (Part 1)

@me29034 My sister has clothing struggles too. She’s not a size 0 but she is less than 5 ft tall and oftentimes “short” pants are too long.

I read somewhere that Ann Taylor, Banana Republic and J Crew offer 15% discounts to college students. I bet you could find something at H & M. I’ve seen suits and such and they do have very small sizes.

@fretfulmother: “Nonetheless, I was blessed with proportions that benefit from darker wash jeans if one’s goal is the generally accepted notions of “flattering” which again, I do not impose on anyone!”

I woke up thinking about you, and proportions and figures. I ruminated on my last comment to you and determined to tell you that I am from a community of folks who have learned to look at, love, and live with the various ways ‘woman’ presents. For so long the figures of the women from whom I descend were held to be outside of the standards of beauty. My, how times have changed in many ways, though.

Though my body does not fit the tastes of many, there has always been a place on the ‘ooh, la, la’ scale for me within my community, just because, well, body. So my outlook is I am/She is/We are woman with all that that brings…

But, hey, is the black wash jean look really a ‘thing’ in that area?

@me29034 Express has sizes down to 00 Short. Is she too small for the 00? If so, she is teeny and will probably need alterations. Some stores offer free alterations. Have you checked Uniqlo? They also have small sizes. I think they will do free helming.

@Waiting2exhale - I’m not exactly a fashion maven  but I think yes, black wash jeans are “in” around here in the fall.

@me29034 Finding business clothes for a very small girl takes a lot of shopping and going from store to store. We found tiny business clothes for tiny D14 at Banana Republic (used sales and the instant credit card discount to bring the price down) Ann Taylor, and Limited. She hates shopping, and finding appropriate things requires hopping around from store to store and sometimes an online order). Not fun, but she owns a suit for interviews, and enough nice business casual clothes to make it through a work week for her internship.
We also visited thrift stores in an upscale area last time she was home and she came home with two nice skirts for $8. When she looked at the labels on the way home she found they were dry clean only but when she searched the brands, she discovered they were selling used on eBay for $100-200. And they fit her perfectly. She can sell them for a profit if she ever gets tired of them.

@Undercovermom1 Yes, JCrew gives 15% discount. My sweet girl got two pair of dress pants, two jackets, two shirts and a pair of shoes last weekend. They were all 50%off and then she got an extra 15%.

We made up the difference when we purchased Tieks for her. She’s loved these shoes for ever and my hubby promised a few pair for college (I blame that one on my hubby).

@RyanG1207 Hmm. I guess we have never seen those 00 in the stores near us. We do go in Express and she always finds things she likes but unless it is something that is meant to be loose fitting, it just never seems to work. 00 Short should work for her. That is actually her preferred size. Maybe we can order from the website and get the smaller sizes.

I just checked the website and it does look like they have 00. Maybe we can go to the store and pick styles and then order her size. Not quite as much fun as trying on lots of clothes but it could work. Thank you so much for your help.

@me29034 You can definitely order online. Shipping is free over a certain amount and you can return whatever doesn’t work in the store.

@me29034 Loft has 40% off everything on a regular basis and their sizes included XXS and 00 petite. I have a $19 dress for work in my shopping cart right now!

I hadn’t even thought about the possibility of D16 needing business clothes for freshman year. I think she’s more likely to need hiking gear in her major, but maybe I’ll order her an XS black skirt. I don’t think she currently owns anything that’s not jeans, tiny shorts or a mini dress.

I order a lot of my clothes from eBay.

If you can find a line that runs true to size, (Talbots, in my experience), you can save a lot of money on clothes I could never afford to pay retail for.

I’ve had great success with Loft jeans, but not so much with skirts and dresses. If a seller is wiling to measure up the item, and you’ve got a tape measure at home, this can help unravel the sizing mysteries.

One of my daughters has just moved up in size from 00 to 0, which actually helps tremendously with being able to outfit her. She hasn’t needed too many formal clothes thus far, but when she has it has been such an awful, long experience, trekking from store to store, ordering online and then sending things back.

She will be a senior and recently stopped wearing clothing I bought for her when she was in middle school.

I will check out some of the recommendations given here.

This has been so informative. Thank you @RyanG1207 @Parentof2014grad @HappyFace2018 @eh1234 and @Undercovermom1 (hope I got everyone). I’m so glad I asked this question.

While I don’t think D has ever been the proportions that could be called “teeny”, in our thrift store shopping, I have often see the brands named above in 0 or even 00 sizes. In my area I see a lot of Nordstrom brand clothes, Ann Taylor and Eddie Bauer, with the occasional LL Bean thrown in. D’s tiny friend (who always needed business wear for school exhibitions) has been successful at thrift stores and previously expensive clothes.

@Waiting2exhale D’s proportions are somewhat outside of what used to be considered beautiful as well, and the typical teen “skinny jeans” and tiny tops simply do not work for her. She has long chosen more classic looks over trendy, and wears it well. Her community, like yours, appreciates all manner of size. I always enjoy reading your posts. What a way with words you have.

DD buys business clothes from White House Black Market and they have it in her 00 size. They are having big sale now.

Also, I’m sure it would be hit or miss, but a friend who is a 0 has bought business wear from TJ Maxx or Marshalls. They carry petite brand-name clothing.

D’s college suggests business wear as there are formal events on campus for all students, and certain classes require it (such as D’s education practice class). Because her HS had exhibitions 4X a year, she has plenty. For her VERY hour-glass type figure, Ann Taylor seems to work best.

As a 5’11" & four-quarters woman, it is great for me to be exposed to issues from the other side. Yay for our community here saying “NO” to accepting only one body type as ideal!

@palm715 I was just talking to a coworker yesterday about her height and clothing issues. She is 6’2" and buys from the Extra Tall section. Didn’t even know that existed!

White House Black Market carries 00 as well. They are not cheap usually but they have outlets as well and they have clearance online too. I have found quite a bit of their stuff on eBay and upscale resale stores too.

Oops- missed the post on this store already

@readingclaygirl, I’m glad you had a great orientation and got into honors seminar!

I sympathize with your mom. But it is important for you young adults to gradually take over more responsibility.

@Ryan1207, have fun at orientation! Did your son get into the dorm he wanted?
