4 weeks and 6 days here. I got my new hearing aid today and my audiologist got emotional. I first started seeing him when I was just diagnosed at 5 and I got my first hearing aid before kindergarten started. Now I am starting college soon, and I just got my 3rd one. It’s crazy to know its been 13 years.
34 days until move-in for us and :(. Countdown to tuition due…10 days
The bill is due in a week here.
The only items I’m concerned about if they were lost, stolen, or damanged while D16 is at college are her 2yo MacBook Air, LG smartphone, winter coat, and Razor scooter. I think. This weekend, I need to research this dorm insuance, our homeowner’s, the in-place phone insurance. Any advice about what to be considering?
@readingclaygirl Yup you just made me cry :((
Just made hotel reservations and reservations for a Harbor Cruise at Family weekend in Oct.
Thank you I guess @HappyFace2018 I definitely cried earlier.
@readingclaygirl You made me remember different things/worries we went through as parents as my sweet girl was growing up. Reading your post shows how resilient you are and how resilient my sweet girl is. This feeling that “she won’t need my help anymore” is steadily creeping in on me.
Tuition bill was delivered on Tuesday. I was a happy camper to see $0.00. Won’t have to worry about that until next year! <:-P <:-P <:-P
@carolinamom2boys - sounds like a fun weekend visit!
@readingclaygirl - I bet you are his favorite- he’ll miss you.
@dyiu13 form what I gather, some homeowner’s policies will cover dorm items, others don’t, so that’s the first question you’ll want to ask. Then you’ll want to know the deductible, which seems to vary widely. Also, liability. Our homeowner’s ins. company’s rental policy includes liability, which it looks like the one linked earlier here does not unless you pay extra. Then just compare quotes. It looks like a decent policy is only about $125 a year either way.
Hoping for safe travels and visits for those out of the country!
@readingclaygirl D has been with her pediatrician since she was 2. He is the one who diagnosed her asthma and has seen her almost grow out of it. He knew all about her college and was excited for her at our visit. These great health care providers are almost like extended families members, aren’t they?
…And drum roll–our move-in day is 2 weeks from tomorrow! We’re having the family over for a last BBQ tomorrow because D is literally booked for every minute of next weekend (and a good portion of next week). It’s going to be a very busy 2 weeks-we actually leave a week from Tuesday.
Definitely. Well @bookmom7 I still get to see him. It’s not a pediatric practice. It’s just weird thinking about how he went to a special Ed meeting when I was in kindergarten because they wouldn’t give me a FM system and now he talked to Disability Services at my college to make sure I have the right FM system, which I will.
Nice! Valedictorian?
@texaspg, I’m guessing outside scholarships? Hope the taxes won’t be too high.
Our bill isn’t too bad, no meal plan this year and we got a higher state grant.
@texaspg - yes- Highest Ranking Grad.
He does also have other scholarships- so- taxes won’t be fun @mommdc - but, really can’t complain!
@bookmom7 . Congrats. Even with taxes it won’t be as much as you’d pay without , so you’ll be fine . Ours was slightly more than yours , but not much.
@bookmom7 Congrats! I completely agree with @carolinamom2boys ! This is an outstanding achievement =D>
@bookmom7 What dorm did your LHS get? Does he know yet given he is out of the country? Can’t believe they came out the day he left!
I wanted to share this here because I’ve shared so much of my D’s journey with you all, and our frustration at the occasional “But why JUST a teacher” questions she gets.
As I’ve mentioned, this summer she is working with the Urban League which runs a “summer university” for teens. It’s open to all, but the majority of the students are young men of color who would be considered “at-risk”. The classes run from academics to etiquette to critical thinking to history interspersed with field trips. D does whatever is needed-coordinates the meals, chaperones on the trips, keeps the kids on task. She is younger than many of them, the same age as most.
Yesterday one of the boys, who is definitely one of the at-risk kids, and is trying hard to stay out of trouble, wrote her this: that he was glad he had signed up for the program because he had the chance to meet her. That he had never met someone younger than he was in his own grade, never mind someone who had already graduated. That he was going to try to make better decisions so that HE would graduate and that he would tell his younger sisters about her and tell them to stay on task in school because it was possible to go to college and do it at 16 if you really tried. That he was proud to know her.
I think that next time someone starts with “But you’re so smart, why do you want to be a TEACHER?” she should tell them that story, because THAT is why. Whether or not this boy stays out of trouble or not she may never know, but at least he’s thinking of other options, and it’s because of her. And I am a proud momma.
Your daughter needs to frame that letter @sseamom and put it in all of her classrooms on days when she questions why she became a teacher ( believe me there will be days) she can look at it and remember and recognize the importance of being a supportive , compassionate educator . I wish more males would become teachers. Some of my son’s best role models and supports were his male HS teachers. I bet you are one proud momma.
