Parents of the HS Class of 2016 (Part 1)

Wow @bookmom7! If I saw a tuition bill of $0 I would just assume that D16 had withdrawn from the university without telling me. Weirdly, classes start on 8/22 and the fall semester bill is due September 12. The charges are listed in the account, but aren’t officially on the bill until August 12. I guess can wring (or lose) a few more dollars out of the 529 account while I wait to pay.

Um, what’s this about paying taxes on scholarship money? Mine only has a $3000 merit scholarship per semester but I guess that’s another thing to add to the list of things to figure out.

You must be so proud @sseamom. It sounds like she is definitely on the right path!

We leave in 3 weeks - today is the day I throw up my hands and start cleaning D’s room while she’s off in a music festival in another state for the weekend. She’s still assigned to a room with no roommate and as I look around the apocalyptic nightmare she calls a bedroom, maybe it’s not such a bad thing.

@eh1234 if that $3K is being used toward tuition, books and required fees you won’t owe taxes on it. Scholarships used for room and board, travel
is not only taxable but taxable at the parent’s rate. Make sure you use the 529 money to pay for Room and Board and the merit scholarship for tuition.

@sseamom I cried reading that. That is indeed why your D wants to be a teacher and why she will be so good at it. Also I truly dislike those “But why JUST a teacher” questions.

@sseamom - wonderful to know she is already making a positive impact on others- she will be a great asset to the teaching profession!

@gettingschooled - I am pretty sure he was assigned to Carothers in the Honors Quad but, I don’t know for sure because I can’t log on to his account. (I just see it assigned in my view of the bill) Hopefully when he lands in India & gets settled in- he can check. They will be staying at in Information Systems Corporation Teaching Facility site so, fingers crossed they will have wifi!

@bookmom7 - UT for whatever reason has almost no guaranteed scholarships for anything and that one student per high school getting one year free tuition seems to be one thing that works although most valedictorians end up at other schools.

Can you defer your scholarships to next year if you are expecting to pay tuition? Do you think the school your kid is in will give a tuition scholarship next year? Usually business and engineering honors students get some money.

@texaspg - Yes, UT is notorious for being stingy with $. We were very fortunate in that he did receive a Dean’s Scholars Endowment & TexasExes 4 year renewable scholarships plus some other outside ones - so, no doubt we will be paying more taxes this year. But, with all that said - UT was still the best & most reasonable choice. \m/

UT is very competitive. One of the local kids with a perfect ACT and SAT score will be attending and there are more kids of his caliber who are joining.

Thanks @3scoutsmom. It’s a tuition scholarship from the school that shows as a deduction on our bill, so maybe we/she doesn’t need to do anything with it for tax reporting purposes. Room, board, books, fees and tuition are all coming out of the 529 until it’s gone.

We finally crossed “get a driver’s license” off the list. And afterward S said, “I’m glad that’s over. Now I never have to drive again.” (!!??!!)

Congrats @psychmom <:-P

Thank you very much y’all! I apologize for the late response, just remembered to check CC.

Paid “the bill” yesterday, rented the fridge/micro. 1 month to go.

Anyone have a tablet suggestion? Looking at the cost difference for the e-textbook

i paid the first semester bill a few weeks ago (by check), but did not know the school had received it until my D said “oh yeah, I did get a receipt for the first semester’s payment.” I love how the person who actually pays the bill is actually the last to hear that the payment was received (sigh).

@carlson2 Did your son sign you up to allow notification of his bill and payment . It’s something that he needs to do or you will not receive notifications because of FERPA.

@carolinamom2boys Perfect time to remind people to have their kids will out FERPA waivers. It may or not be easy to find on the website. I know both my sister and I got one at our respective orientations.

Yes. I received notification of the bill, but not that the funds were received. I’ll need to look into this. Thanks carolinamom2boys.

When I told our sweet girl that she did not have to allow us access to her information when she turned 18
her response was “what, why would I not allow you access?” When she refreshed her memory by pulling up GW’s COA she looked at me and said “you and daddy are paying the bill so you can have access to whatever you want!” I cracked up laughing and she said (with a straight face) “no mom, I’m serious, I know this is a blessing and you guys rock!” =D>

Since we are paying the bill, we are requiring access. I am glad that your daughter recognized that’s the way it should be. Kudos to her!

@Justathought1 I could have put it out there like that but it wasn’t necessary. I learned from a dear friend who did that. The second semester of their child’s freshman year, the child was under some serious pressure in an engineering program
didn’t want the parents to see the grades (they weren’t terrible but not the usual good grades). My friend threatened to stop paying the bill
and actually did
not long after the child was found hanging in the closet.

I’m sure there must have been more going on but that pressure pushed the child over the edge.

Our kids are struggling with so many pressures and want to know we trust them. I would have gotten the bill had she not given me access. Yes, there are a lot of items to be handled. While I don’t want her to miss any deadlines
I’d rather give her a chance
show trust. If she misses something she may say “you know mom, I think you need to have access until I get use to all of this.”

Just my approach
