Parents of the HS Class of 2016 (Part 1)

@HappyFace2018 my niece fell from her raised dorm bed (not even lofted) and fractured her shoulder! @MaineLonghorn I remember having a bed rail made from something similar to pvc pipe and canvas. It worked very well. Target has bed rails on their website (granted they’re advertised for toddlers).

Dear Lord @Undercovermom1 that scary! @readingclaygirl I think your right.
My sweet girl sleeps flat on her back with 100 pillows around her (spent a small fortune on pillows at BBB) and doesn’t move an inch. Her bed will not be bunked/lofted but it will be on risers. She’s done a few summer camps with bunked beds. She told me yesterday (for the first time) that when she did Girls State she slips and almost fell getting out of a bunked bed.

Here’s something else…I’ve just casually mentioned the medical durable power of attorney in passing (thinking it’s common knowledge) and have gotten responses of “what are you talking about”. If their child hasn’t gone to school they are relieved…if their child has they are frantic. Thank God for CC because I never would have been the wiser.

I asked and the lofted beds at P do have rails!!

@carolinamom2boys, sorry about the car troubles. That’s a fear of mine.

Just double checked and guard rails/ladders are provided at D’s dorm. Hadn’t heard about the shower curtain idea, though I did read somewhere about bringing a tension rod if your closet doesn’t have a door. And now that has me thinking about window curtains. You know, ‘back in the day’ I don’t think so much time was spent color coordinating or decorating dorm rooms!

Are we talking about shower curtains inside the room? I don’t remember older D ever having a private area in her room when two people shared a single room (freshman and junior years). Sophomore year they had two rooms but used the front room as a common area while senior year they used one room per person (these rooms have a single door where you have to go through one room to get to the next).

However, different colleges have different traditions and if it is common at some schools to have privacy in a single room…

@happyface2018, it’s so hard when people point out that their student attends a school that is closer than the one your student chose. Since D15 decided to attend a school on the opposite coast I’ve endured dozens of these remarks. I honestly think that people don’t mean to be hurtful and I’ve sort of developed a hard shell about it. Just nod and change the subject. That said, it’s also kind of awful and thoughtlessly cruel that they are trying to make themselves feel better about their situation (because presumably yours is worse).

Take comfort that you’ve raised a child who is brave and independent enough to try something new!!

@jmek15 Thank you so much

I may or may not have woken up at 2am from a deep sleep to order poster command strips from Amazon Prime. #:-S

@Undercovermom1 Well…now you can officially join my 12 step program :)) …the first of which is to admit we have a problem

We still don’t have the box number needed to mail things, and we leave next Monday. I spent the morning analyzing my Amazon list with two day shipping vs my Target list with 15% off everything but may not make in it time. The fret is real!

Hopefully you get that # soon @palm715 Just doing last minute stuff here and I’m going to meet up with a friend later today to catch up and say goodbye

@palm715 how stressful! I’ve got a Target list as well. When do you expect to receive her box#?

D16 thinks the folks who receive packages at her college probably dislike her already - we’ve had about 5 deliveries in her name. I’m sure she’s not the only one!

At UK, during orientation week, there was a midnight excursion to Target. A friend of mine said her daughter’s university did the same. UK is definitely keeping the kids busy!

Re: shower curtains in the room. In the dorm at UK, (a double that shares a bathroom with another double), there is a partial wall dividing part of the room in two. You can bunk the beds and put them both on one side, or keep them separate and you’ll have a wall that runs out to about 3/4? of the way the length of the bed. Each side has a window.

We had the diaper genie too–originally acquired for S13. I think we stopped using it sometime during D16’s babyhood, deciding it was less smelly to get those things right into the garbage can rather than have them sit around…also, we’d moved and the outside garbage can was more accessible. :"> D16 liked the swing, but what she loved was something we got a few years later: the toddler-size water/rice/sand table that stood in the center of our kitchen. Playing there occupied hours of that busy girl’s time. Good memories! Thanks, @dyiu13. :x

Just want to say thanks for letting me post here and be part of this close community

Good luck to you, @readingclaygirl

Thank you @Midwest67

Have a great freshman year @readingclaygirl!

So, so many emotions here. Move in for DS was last Thursday. That same day a HS classmate was killed in an auto accident. They were not super close but, it has shaken the community. The service was today. I went for DS since he is at school.
It made me realize that even though I miss my DS terribly, I will (God willing) see him again. Hug him again. Text & chat with him again.
If they are still at home- give your kiddo a huge hug & tell them you love them. If they are already at school send them a virtual hug & let them know how important they are!

That’s so sad @bookmom7 . No one wants to believe that their child is mortal. When I was going over medical POA over the weekend , it was very sobering .

@bookmom7 Condolences and prayers [-O<

@carolinamom2boys Agreed…very sobering. My sweet girl said she felt good knowing that we handled it.
