I think I procured the very final move-in items today. A rubber wedge doorstop & a 4-wheel flatbed hand-truck for about $40 from Ace. I can keep it at home and reuse it in all the coming years of move-in/move-out. (The school doesn’t provide carts.)
Only three more days…with an 18th birthday thrown in there too! Squeee!
We struggled over the Dollar Tree doorstops yesterday. I wanted to buy them; D16 did not. Well, it was just me and my own counsel at Ace today. The doorstop will go into my move-in kitbag, and I’ll leave the wedge for her if she (or her roommate) decides she wants it.
Don’t know if I was ready for ANYTHING but I had the toolkit and rain gear at move in @mommdc ! We did use it all – including the door stop.
So sorry to hear of that tragedy @bookmom7. It certainly puts it all in perspective.
Good luck to you @readingclaygirl ! Keep us up-to-date on campus things we should know. You are our mole.
DH got a great text from DS today. DH had something he always said to DS at daycare drop off that was sort of goals for the day. DS confirmed that those goals are currently being met at college. All is well.
Thanks everyone! I leave in just 3 days and it’s crazy! I said goodbye to one of my best friends today and it was so hard. We both started crying in the middle of the coffee shop. @Cheeringsection I will be a good little mole for you all
We are at the hotel. We have an early morning move in tomorrow at 8:00. The dorm is on a steep hill and I am hoping that we do not have to push the cart uphill! S16 put together a playlist for the 6 hour drive here and the first 8-10 songs were all about leaving and saying good bye. I got a big lump in my throat and had to put my sunglasses on!
@gettingschooled your ideas made me laugh, but no they were a bit more aspirational with a little silliness thrown in. My DH is quite good at silliness.
I was obsessing about door stops last summer when my son was attending a brief summer program. It seemed no store we checked had them. Son and I had lunch in the college’s town and while walking down the sidewalk I spotted a white rubber door stop. Weird. I kept it.
For the last year every time I saw Command Strips or Hooks at a good price, I purchased some. Consequently everything in my sons room has been hung and he has a drawer full of Command adhesives. Enough for the next five years or so. He hung about twelve vintage license plates, a framed poster, a flag and some hooks in his room.
He officially moved in last Tuesday (seven days ago!) but went for a three day camp off grounds. The whole family went up on Thursday and we took his fridge, TV, microwave and important papers. The two step moving experience was less stressful and I miraculously did not get emotional. I was steeled to be a wreck. He has phoned our land line and texted several times. He just texted while I’m writing this! He posted pictures of his dorm room on Facebook. I would call it vintage industrial man cave. It’s comfortable. They have no choice but to bunk or loft their beds. The room is tiny and instead of a window they have an operable skylight. He has A/C, carpet and an elevator so it’s a coveted dorm. He’s in a Living/Learning Community. He has found a bike shop to make a small repair to his bike and ordered textbooks from Amazon. I think his launch has been successful.
Edit to add: He called while doing laundry. He had lots of wet clothes from camp and thought it wise to wash them! He’s so grown up!
Big day here tomorrow as DD will move into her temporary dorm. We will stick around in Boston until next week for parents orientation. Hopefully everything will work out.
I was just coming on here to say hello and wish the next group of move-iners luck when D called. She worked out her schedule after a class got cancelled-it was more trouble that we’d have thought to solve that problem! The call was about the textbook, but she chatted for awhile and I am not complaining.
The update is that she added on an extra class in addition to replacing the cancelled one, and now has 18 credits, most of them in education classes. She is very happy about that. She’s applied for an internship with the student government, signed up for some clubs, and found a school where she hopes to volunteer. She also has a home-away-from-home church, something that was very important to her. She hopes to continue doing praise dance there. She and her roommate have become BFF’s and a 3rd girl has become one of the Musketeers with them. They’re already planning to go home with the roommate for the 4-day weekend in October. In short, D has picked up where she left off in HS and has clearly found her place and her people. It’s hard for me to be sad when she is so happy.
Best wishes to those about to move, and hugs to those having a hard time. Cheers to everyone as we launch both our kiddos and ourselves!
Special shout out to @readingclaygirl as you start your own next chapter.
I bought 2 doorstops in a package at Meijer–1.50. D16 has lent the other one out a ton of times already. She mocked me.
So class started yesterday. She auditioned for a choir and made it–a pretty big deal at a uni with a huge MT rep. She is considering rushing a service sorority as is her roommate. So far, all good.
Maybe today is the day D will pack? We can hope. 2 days til we hit the road. I’ve been cooking all her favorite dinners…hopefully I don’t drop her off with her freshman 15 already onboard. :-j
We hit the road tomorrow at 12, @LexieAnn, and DS has yet to pack any clothes. I warned him it will be like some of his vacation packing, where he forgets to pack any shorts or pants or walks out the door with no shoes on!
