I was wondering @palm715
Best wishes for move-in. We have a few more days.
Looking forward to hearing how it all goes @carolinamom2boys and @PAO2008 and anyone else yet to move in!
Well today was the first time I burst into tears in public. At the end of church we started chatting with a family weāve been friends with since our family relocated to Indiana in 2007. These girls have been in small group (middle school and high school) and attended fall and winter retreats together. When the service ended our familyās were chatting and the mom said her daughter āFaceTimed me to tell me how homesick she isā¦at least sheās only an hour and a half away and come can home but your daughter will be 10 hours away!ā That was it! I started crying and could not stop. Their other daughter looked at the mom and said āmom, did you think about that before you said it?!ā I just hugged the mom because I knew she didnāt mean it in a bad way. She just cried and apologized.
@HappyFace2018 Iām sure she meant well.
@HappyFace2018 at least it was a logical lead to bursting into tears. I tend more to things that others look upon as odd. Like struggling with the idea that the little boy in the pew in front of us this morning had the same toy that was DSās favorite long ago. Hang in there!
Hang in there parents who are having a hard time with their kids leaving!
Iām one of those parents who is thrilled to have both kids happily at college. Iām looking forward to getting the house back in order (and no kids to āundoā it). And, my anxiety levels should come down several notches as I get more involved in the non-kid portions of my life.
Ah yes, @Undercovermom1, I remember the vibrating hammock chair. For awhile, it was the only thing I could get D to sleep in.
@HappyFace2018, another mom told me the story of her childās first tearful call home only a few days after move in. I suppose itās like people who share pregnancy/delivery horror stories with you when youāre in the final stretch of your own pregnancy.
I did some shopping today, found some good sales at Kohlās and picked up some organization/storage items. I figure if they donāt work, I can always return them. My best find was a bed bug encasement on clearance at another store for only $5. Plus, I was able to use a 20% off coupon.
Good luck to everyone moving in and settling in back at home after moving our 2016 class into their dorms! We leave Wednesday b/c we are 3+ hours from campus and have to move in at 7:30 am. Luckily, the roommate has the same move-in time so they can coordinate what they have and still need. We will head home after the 4 pm parent farewell gathering on campusā¦Iām wondering if we should have stayed over another night, but the orientation schedule is packed so I think heading home after move-in makes sense.
One positive is that I just checked parents weekend and it overlaps with a day that D18 has off from school. So, we quickly booked a hotel room for 2 nights at the beach 1/2 hour away from campus for that weekend, and it gives us something to look forward to already (the reality of him being gone is finally settling in on me :(). Parents weekend is about a month after move-in, so we can bring additional supplies and take home anything he still hasnāt used :).
Hereās the update . Everything was going well. He was a little stressed moving in. It was hot, but we got everything done. We met his roommate and his family. Roommate had definitely had enough of Mom and Dad for the day. Iām hoping it was because he was a little overwhelmed. DS16 had been talking to a girl from NJ who he offered to take to dinner with us. We started out to dinner , and several sensors came on , and the car would not go faster than 25 miles per hour. We ate dinner . I called a close friend of mine who happened to be home , and she drove us to the airport to get a rental car. We are now on the way home. Goodbyes were short and sweet. Few tears because I was so distracted . Just texted him to let him know that we were headed home. He said he was good and eating ice cream with rest of his dorm. DH will head back down tomorrow to have the car towed and arrange for repairs. What an adventure!
@carolinamom2boys so sorry to hear about the car - hope itās a quick and inexpensive fix! But glad to hear the rest of move-in went okay, and that you were able to go out with DS and another student before leaving. Sounds like he found a fun activity after you left, so thatās reassuring, too. What a stressful day for you - hope you can get some rest tonight!
Sorry to hear about the car! @carolinamom2boys Glad move in was successful!
So a friend just dropped off her daughter and posted photos of her room on FB. Her bed is lofted (really high). I asked if the bed had a safety rail. That didnāt go over well.
@HappyFace2018 sorry your advice/ viligence was not well received! She probably thinks you were being over bearing and over protective while you were just trying to look out for her daughter so tragedy does not occur. Itās not always easy being the one with knowledge
Iām doing the same on FB today ā asking about bed rails on those kidsā lofted beds.
@carolinamom2boys Time for your messageā¦or some lovely treat. You deserve it.
Combining the crying in public and what did you use when your '16 was a baby stories: D was about 5 days old and I realized I needed a nursing bra. As I left for Target, my dear loving grandmother who was visiting us casually said, āThis is the first time you will be away from her since she was conceived.ā To this day I am shocked no one called the police about the crazy woman in Target sobbing so hard she could hardly breathe.
*massage
Sigh, autocorrect.
Today my daughter told me she wants to loft her bed. I told her only if she gets rails. She asked how she can do that, and I said she needs to ask the school. But she wonāt be lofting without rails!
We went shopping for supplies tonight, and she said something like, āOh, and I will need to get a shower curtain at some pointā¦ā āWhat?ā āYou know, to create some privacy - I can screen off an area.ā I must have rolled my eyes because she said, āDonāt give me that look! A lot of kids are doing that!ā ?!? Has anyone else heard of this?
@MaineLonghorn Not until you mentioned it, but I googled it and found images of a lot of really cool ideas to partition rooms with curtains or to put around a bed for privacy. Now that I see it, I am kind of surprised this is the first I have heard of it.
