Parents of the HS Class of 2016 (Part 1)

Page 500! Wow!

@lonetreegrad I’m glad your daughter’s interview went well. This may actually work in her favor that she performed well
under very stressful circumstances .

My S16 got a message from University of Maryland noting that they will not penalize students if the SAT scores are late. Admissions offices really are understanding. Most of the AdComms seem to be recent grads, very enthusiastic about their opportunity to help the next generation of students.

@carolinamom2boys That’s so satisfying to see your son take on a tough challenge and do so well. Mine also is taking a tough schedule. He probably will only get one or two As this quarter. But he is working hard. He had a good experience at a math tournament yesterday. Though he’s not the best mathlete, he apparently has been choosing the A and B teams, a task not unlike Fantasy Football. He also chose to go to a high school sporting event for the first (and possibly last) time ever tonight, so he may finally be getting some school spirit. He also joked that on Sunday he plans to do a 5K – a 5K of words for the first day of NaNoWriMo.

And, to our relief the errant LOR finally showed up in Naviance and Common App. GC said that sometimes teachers upload but forget to hit “submit”. It has been a good day!

@lonetreegrad I’m sure the interviewer knows how easy it is to get confused when there is a Starbucks on every corner. Sounds like the story ended well. Next time s/he will choose some place more unique to meet!

In the same vein as clam farts (but not nearly as funny), when I applied to Duke Univ I erroneously checked a box indicating I had been suspended from school. Didn’t realize the mistake until way late in the process and probably lost sleep over it. I got in anyway.

Got an e-mail from counseling department saying we are responsible for SAT and ACT score reporting and make sure scores are sent.

When I applied grad schools long time ago, I asked ETS to send GRE scores to the schools I applied. When I received several acceptance letter, a couple of schools said I had to sent official scores to finalize the process. There might be a delivery accident or something happened. Anyway, it might be different nowadays but my guess is adcom do not penalize a student because of late official score delivery. As long as they have self reported score, they can evaluate applicants.

My S also just hit submit on two EA schools. I think his essays including the main common app are just alright to fine but he is fairly happy with them. Both English teacher and GC reviewed and OKd them. Also I am not sure he can do much better. So I must smile and nod and be happy that he actually completed the apps and two days early even. Now he has 5 more supplemental essays to write for the 3 colleges that he really wants to attend. Those aren’t due until Jan 1 though. His attention can turn to his District championship soccer game on Saturday.

We’ve run into a weird problem. D took the “school day” SAT on Oct. 14, and scores are supposed to be out starting tomorrow. D went to log in, but her “regular” College Board log in shows no test taken in Oct. Her school registered all the kids, and her confirmation email and ticket do not show anything but a registration number. She’s going to ask at school if they know what to do, but I suspect we’ll need to call the CB. The school wouldn’t have given each kid a login, would they? We need to know how to access and order the scores! I did ask on the SAT forum-hope someone somewhere has a clue.

@sseamom My son took the OCT 14th SAT as well. We just looked in his account online. The SAT shows the test taken date. He told me though, that he got an email from somewhere that the scores won’t be out until the 5th of Nov. He says he never heard that they would be out tomorrow.

@carolinamom2boys, when my oldest daughter was struggling with math, we found one-on-one tutoring to work the best for her. I think it can be really difficult for a kid who is already struggling to get through the day’s assignments to have supplementary material added in. However, it might be useful while on break to do a course (perhaps with some homeschool curric
I really like Teaching Textbooks) for review. (And HUGE congrats on your senior’s grades!! WOOT!)

@ballerina2016, my daughter assigned activities that happened in the summer before freshman year to 9th grade, and so on (since the activities after senior year won’t be on the app  ) Granted, her school has a nontraditional schedule (July 1-June 30), so after July 1, she moves up to the next grade anyway.

@lonetreegrad, that does sound super stressful! I doubt the interviewer will hold it against your daughter though.

@Mugglemom, ugh, College Board! My D16’s scores from the October test last year didn’t become available until either November or December last year. It was so annoying, as we needed to figure out if she should test again soon. Grateful she didn’t have an app deadline though. That said, I think the schools know what’s up with the College Board, so as long as she is communicating with them, it should be just fine.

@crowlady, I have to smile about the sporting event, because my daughter unexpectedly wanted to go to a high school football game last weekend
and wanted my very introverted husband to go along. I was
surprised, lol.

@momofzag, congrats on the apps. All these essays are like another language arts credit, in my opinion, lol. I think my daughter has 3 or 4 more. Two of the more difficult ones are for a competitive full ride scholarship at a school that is not very selective. Worth the effort in that case though, and I suppose it’s part of them making sure she is serious about the school. And she is
there are mountains

@sseamom, I seem to recall that when my daughter’s Oct scores were delayed last year, there was something weird/concerning like that on her sign in page. Wish I could remember specifically. In the end, you probably should call just to ease your mind.

The email I got from the “Western region” person said between Oct. 30 and Nov. 4, but my concern is more about her getting in to see and order them at all! LK-so your son just logged in under his previous login/password? D’s does NOT show that she took the test. Hopefully the testing coordinator at her school can help and I won’t need to call. Urgh.

@sseamom Yes, it shows up with the other taken test dates.

D has received two letters from schools so far-- not acceptances (or rejections) but reminders to make sure all the pieces are submitted. I know they’re not indicative of anything, but it somehow feels like we’re moving a teeny step closer

No words of wisdom on College Board, just sympathies. Consider this to be uploaded chocolate/libation of choice!

Just checked CB, all of S scores are sent EXCEPT the scores that I paid to have rushed to his EA school, they are still pending. SMH. What makes me upset is that the EA school told us they only look at 2 subject tests scores, so we sent two and paid to have them rushed to the college. Then their site said to send as many as we like, so we called the school and the AO said by sending a third score it gives the college a better understanding of the student. So we decided to send his third score which is pretty good, but not great and paid to have those scores rushed also. Now the only scores the college hasn’t recieved are the rushed scores which like I said, are due on the first.

@sseamom I hope you can get everything straightened out quickly. How unnerving for you daughter and your family . College Board has had some issues this year. Is this typical? I’ve got one more child needing to test in two years. Hopefully they can get things straight.

@petrichor11 My son’s friend received a letter from her top choice of universities while she was working, had to wait 4 hours until she got home to open it only to find it was a letter saying thanks for applying and we have all the pieces of your application . Can these schools not send an email for that? What a disappointment? I like how University of South Carolina send outs their letters. It’s proudly displayed on the outside of the envelope with Cocky ( their mascot) that you’ve been accepted.

i just called College Board and his scores have been sent. Both teachers finally uploaded recs last night. So now the only thing standing in the way of the two EA apps due Sunday is S himself, and those essays. It will be a long weekend.

Ugh!! Just went on the CB website and found out that CB didn’t send S Bio E subject test scores to any of the 4 colleges I listed for my free score reports. All these colleges require all scores to be sent. What is wrong with these people?

Warning to those who are going to cut it close with the November 1 deadline:

Do not wait until the eleventh hour (literally). My strong memory is that in the past the common app bandwidth isn’t sufficient to handle all the traffic that may come after 11 pm on October 31st. You don’t want your child to miss the deadline because you can’t get on to the site or because it’s working so slowly that the big hand hits ‘12’ before you can click ‘submit’.

A couple of S’s friends mentioned today that the Common App website is already a bit laggy for them. Could be their computers, but could also be traffic. Between my two kids, I seem to know an astonishing number of 11th hour submitters.

Thank you all for your support and kind words. D sent a thank you email to the interviewer

Happy to not be dealing with CB apparently! Learned from this thread that one of D’s schools has Nov 1 deadline–she had thought Nov 15. So I guess I know what she is doing tomorrow.
