Parents of the HS Class of 2016 (Part 1)

@AsleepAtTheWheel thanks for the reminder. We have a few Nov 1st deadlines. D is known for sliding in under the wire so I’ve begged and pleaded for earlier deadlines. We are hoping tonight or tomorrow morning at the latest. Fingers crossed life doesn’t get in our way. Of course today, my internet is dropping in and out like a bouncing ball in the hands of an angry toddler. Oy. Will the fun never stop?

DD is writing so many supplemental essays! I get a feeling that if it is really difficult to come up with the topic for those essays, school might not be a good fit.

I am pretty sure DD will hit the summit button last minute. It is very hard to push her, so I would let her decide when she finishes her app.

My theory is that if they are aware that things might get touch and go at the end and the app is still waiting to hit submit to the end, then maybe that school wasn’t the best school for them anyway. We have a list of deadlines. She knows the important ones. If a few less important ones fall off the table because she’s not paying attention, I’m not worrying. They obviously weren’t exciting enough to get done on time.

Do you think sending a screenshot of the SAT II scores in an email to the EA school is ok? D ordered her scores on Oct 22nd and it is still pending. Her SAT I score to one school (Rolling admission) was ordered on Oct 18th and that one is also still pending. College Board is constantly messing things up. First it was the June 6th SAT fiasco and now this!!!

Just checked portal for one of the schools and I see that test scores are outstanding. College Board sent them on September 4. How could it be?

new frustrating-Naviance question: once a teacher submits an LoR, it becomes “submitted” - how long does it take for the status to change to “delivered” on the Common App end…?

@fretfulmother I think immediately or within few hours.

@fretfulmother I think it becomes delivered when the school chooses to ‘pick it up’. At least that was my impression from last year.

Regarding College Board. we are all beyond frustrated. Some schools have drop dead deadlines. What can we do? D was told to call the schools in question by her GC, so that’s her plan of attack. Best of luck to everyone navigating this nightmare.

@Ballerina2016 and @MuggleMom - thank you! So far it has been two days… And going into the weekend with the deadline is making me a bit crazy.

…Do we think that the companies/colleges/websites and their employees are planning to do a work day tomorrow (Sat) because of the confluence with the 11/1 deadline?

@fretfulmother I would not count on it.

@fretfulmother absolutely not. I remember thinking that exact thing last year and was heartbroken that it didn’t happen. This is job to these people. Yes, our kids feel (and sometimes rightly so) that their lives are on the line, but its all in a day’s work for the people who aren’t applying.

Oh rats, then…

Since this is the Friday before the EA deadline, I decided to call the college for D since she is in school. I know they prefer the kids to call them, but I told him that D is in school and deadline is this Sunday and College Board is holding on to the scores!! He was very nice and told me that all the required things are there. He also said that they usually wait about 10 days after the deadline to make sure all the required items arrive. If not, they send an email to find out what is causing the delay. He knew about the College Board delay.

LK-thanks. D sees no test taken in Oct. using her “real” login. One of the teachers working with the seniors told her this morning that they will only get hard-copy paper score reports and that they won’t be online. And they have no reports yet. That makes NO SENSE because that would mean that none of the seniors could send these scores officially to any colleges! Not only that, we got a robocall last week reminding everyone that seniors could still order free score reports up to 9 days after the test. So there HAS to be a way to access them online! She is taking it up with the GC and principal. If she doesn’t get a satisfactory answer, I’m going to start making calls. This is ridiculous.

@AsleepAtTheWheel and @petrichor11, I heard last year that it was very hard to revise and/or submit on the night of Halloween last year. The tip was that if you still haven’t finished before October 30th, get up early in the morning on Halloween to finish and submit!

@sseamom I just looked at my son’s score page again. Your D should really see her test. The test from the 14th is under “My Test Registrations” and there is a little i for info next to it, that says, when you click, that this test was part of “SAT school initiative, administered at your local high school.” I am sure you are talking about the same test. If the school says she is getting a hard copy, they may have messed up. I think that my son registered through his school’s portal and not the SAT.(I think, he is not home to ask.) They may have had to do something to transfer the info to the CB, and maybe her school did something wrong - or that somehow her info didn’t match the CB account that she already had. You may want to start by calling the CB.

@sseamom I agree with @LKnomad Call College Board now. From my experience, it seems that a lot of school officials will say things (some not true) to the kids just to make them go away. I have noticed that happens with my D all the time. I usually call the school and end up getting the right answer right away.

I have been reading over the last several days about the mounting frustration you all have been experiencing over the test scores not being sent. We are not in the same boat mostly because my daughter has stubbornly refused to retry on her SATs, feeling she did well enough for the schools to know she is able to do the work and she just flat out refused to sit for sat subject tests. I found this note on the university of GA admissions blog. It seems like the colleges are aware of the score sending problems and are also very frustrated. Maybe for some of your schools you can search twitter and blogs to see if there are any discussion about what to do to try to work around the problems. I hope things work for all of your kids struggling to make the Nov. 1 deadlines. My fingers are crossed that the internet gods are with you.

Random Admission Thoughts-October 2016 edition

We are about a week out from the Early Action application deadline, and one day past the document deadline. As such, there are a wide range of questions that are hitting us right now. Here are a few thoughts on the issues that we are seeing most often.

ACT Scores -The ACT has announced that the September ACT scores with Writing are being reviewed and sent out slower than expected, but they still project having all scores sent to colleges within 3-8 weeks of the test being taken. Our office knew this timeline going into our Early Action planning, and so we will continue to import ACT scores through the projected 8 week out delivery date. Please be patient, as we do not control the sending of the scores, only the uploading of the scores once we receive them. Our office uploads test scores on Tuesdays and Fridays, so be patient.
ACT Screen Shot of Scores - While the ACT has suggested that colleges might accept a screen shot of the ACT scores, we do not want these sent to us. As I stated above, we have planned for the long timeline that ACT has in sending out scores, so we will continue to import scores for EA (and RD). Again, do not send a screen shot of your scores, as we will not use it.
SAT Scores - The SAT recently modified their test score format and delivery method, so for the week of 10/19-10/23, they did not send out any scores as they changed over to the new system. They expect that they will be back to normal sending SAT scores (which include the October 3rd scores) on 10/26 (update-College Board sent these scores late on 10/27, so we loaded them on 10/28. SAT scores requested on 10/15 or after have not been sent yet.). Again, please be patient, as we need time to then receive the scores and upload them. We will be accepting scores for a little while longer to take into account the delays in the SAT and ACT delivery issues.
Incomplete EA Applications -If for some reason your file is incomplete when we stop accepting test scores and documents, your application will be deferred and you will then have until 1/15 to complete part II and submit any missing items. You should not cancel your application, and you do not need to request a change to Regular Decision, as we will just defer your application so you can take the next steps.
Strong Applicant Pool - We have 14,515 Early Action applicants (about a 10% increase over last year), and all indications are that this group is stronger academically than last year. What does this mean? It means that it will most likely be a little more challenging to be admitted Early Action this year. No data or facts on the applicant pool to release at this time, but it is a strong group of students.
Prepare Yourself - Early Action applicants have self selected to apply EA because they feel comfortable with our office reviewing their academic credentials now, so these are generally very strong students. As such, we will be admitting, deferring and denying a large number of students. While you may know your academic information, and somewhat the academic profile of your peers/HS friends, we are dealing with 14,515 students from all over the globe. You only know a small slice of the applicant pie, while we are looking at the overall group. As such, hope for an admission offer, but also know that if you are deferred, know that this is not a deny. A deferral is simply our office asking for more time and more information so we can do a more detailed review.
Patience - Right now, just be patient as our office continues to match up documents and test scores, reviews files, and plans out our Early Action decisions. Read a book, see a movie, take a nap. Just be calm and wait for the next step in the Early Action process.
I hope this helps, and Go Dawgs!
