Parents of the HS Class of 2016 (Part 1)

Well SAT scores say they are still pending but S’s math 2 score report just showed up at his EA school’s portal. Weird.

I hate bureaucracy! Stayed up with DD last night to register for her CAL III class at the local cc, they only offer two classes per semester across all campuses and the other campus is ridiculously far away. When her registration opened at midnight there were already 18 students signed up for the class she wanted. When she tried to register she got a message that her account was on hold and that she could not register because she hadn’t turned in paper work that I know she turned in last semester.

She got up early this morning and went to the CC to figure out what is going on. She brought backed a paper that I need to be signed (same paper that we submitted last semester, turns out that we need to summit the same form EVERY semester) I notice that it needed her GC’s signature. She had a late start today so she said could get it signed before school. I told her I’d pick up the form and take it to the CC after I dropped her brother off at class. From past experience with me attempting to talk to the CC I knew that she need to fill out a “proxy form” and provide a cop y of her student ID and a bunch of other stuff which she put together for me.

I went to pick up the signed form from her at school, about 45 minutes away and find a note saying that she had tried to call but I had left my cell phone at home and that the GCs were all in a meeting this morning but she’s leave to signed form with the receptionist by 10:50. I had about an hour to kill and it was not worth it to drive home so I grab breakfast at Chik-Fil-A. Go back to school and pick up form. Drive to CC about 30 minutes away, wait in line, go through the whole explanations about the the proxy, they agree to talk to me but then point out the form needs to be sign by the high school principle AND GC.

I drive the 30 minutes back to the school, check in with the receptionist and get my sticker pass to go to the front office. Principle is in meetings, I ask his secretary if she can just stamp his signature, no he has to actually sign it, can I come back at 1:00? I have to pick up homeschooled DS20 from a class at 1:00 but can make it back by 1:30. Pick up DS20 head to high school and pick up signed form. Drive the back to the CC.

Go back through the whole proxy thing and after checking that everything is in order I’m allowed to sign in to wait to see a councilor. An hour later (with S20 waiting in the car) I show the gentleman all the signed paper work and proxy paper work again. I think I’m good but then he says no you D cant register for the CAL III because she doesn’t have the prerequisites! I explain that she took CAL BC last year and got a 5 on the AP exam. I showed him her official HS transcript the shows the she took CAL BC with high A’s. I also know that scores were sent from CB to school but he claims the school has no record of any AP’s.

I ask if they can give a “provisional” approval so DD can register for class before it’s full if I promise to resend AP scores ASAP. Guy calls in his boss and after going through everything again he agrees! But then cautions me that some proffs will not accept AP credits for from prerequisites even though the school grants credit for CAL I and CAL II with an AP score of 4 and D got a 5 and is currently taking Multi Variable CAL at HS.

I can’t wait for her to graduate just so I won’t have to deal with the local CC anymore!

Thankfully DD was able to register for the class tonight and now we have to wait to see if the proff has an issue with AP credits…

Good luck@3scoutsmom. What a crazy day.

We are in the “heavy homework” group. I really wish my DS had less homework but our school seems to give so much. He is taking 3 AP and 2 honors classes plus English. I tried to get him to take one less AP class this year since he also does a sport three seasons. It is crazy how every night he has 5 or more hours of homework. This is in addition to what he does in the study halls he has 3 days a week.

One a good note, in the last week he got three applications submitted. That makes four total (he was previously accepted to Pitt’s honors college), three of which are his safeties and probably bigger schools than the ideal. But as I keep telling him, he just needs a group of schools to apply to where he could be happy at any of them. More supplemental essay ahead. They really are a bear. Tonight and tomorrow he is with my DH visiting WashU. It is farther way than I would like DS to be but since we let his sister go there (and she had a fabulous experience), we couldn’t tell him he could not consider it. Hoping he’ll have lots of good choices on the east coast come spring.

Busy day in our mailbox! D’16 received acceptance #4 for Baldwin Wallace University (Berea, OH) and acceptance #5 for University of the Sciences (Philadelphia, PA) direct admit BS/DPT program. Both schools also sent notification of their merit awards in their application packets too!

Good Luck to everyone who have recently submitted or are about to submit apps!

We have been super busy with Nov. 1 EA apps and other fall priorities at school in the last few days, so have only able to check thread sporadically…my comments refer to things a few pages back.

@lvmjac @drmom123 Quite awhile back someone recommended the book “Where You Go Is Not Who You’ll Be”. The book got many positive reviews…perhaps it might help put things into perspective with your D. We have had a couple little moments in our household as well, so I have now reserved a copy of the book from our local library. I agree with you that this system and the process is aweful and very anxiety provoking!

Regarding the delay in SAT tests between ordering date and sent date…we have not experienced more than a 6 days spread (and have ordered 9 total stretched out between Sept and Oct). The most recent two that were ordered on 10/28 were sent 11/2 - so took 5 days. No extreme delays experienced in our house…but so sorry for those of you who have had major issues with this! The ACT does appear to send same day (perhaps instantly?).

@3scoutsmom I am EXHAUSTED after reading about your day yesterday! What great patience and fortitude you have (as well as endurance!). Thank goodness gas prices are low right now!

@labegg Woohoo for your D’s additional acceptances and merit awards!

@PAO2008 - how long did Pitt take to get back to you? My DS16 applied there and everything was completed I believe around 10/25, but we haven’t heard anything except some nice “think of Pitt!” emails since then.

@fretfulmother. My D’16 waited just about two weeks from portal saying everything was complete and email acceptance. Letter took a lot longer to arrive (although the it was the Post Office fault not Pitt). We are OOS.

That was back in September when there were fewer apps to process. Emails are usually sent out between 3 and 3:30pm M-F. If your kid has applied for a special program or Honors it seems to be taking a bit longer. Over on the Pitt thread people seem to be saying around 3 - 4 weeks now. The email is the “tell”.

Good Luck!

@labegg thank you! We are also OOS (MA). So when do you think we might hear from them, or is not hearing yet a bad sign?

@fretfulmother I wouldn’t start worrying until mid November. The volume of applications has increased and they have more to go through.

@labegg - thank you!

It occurs to me that it won’t even be two weeks until next Monday…

My top college (Russell Sage College) had an intruder today. And a possible gunshot was heard. They called in the State Police and FBI. There was a shelter in place but it was just lifted. No clue if they caught the guy. Scary stuff especially since I’m staying overnight next weekend.

DD joined class of 2020 applicants group for one of the schools she applied EA and today she is all stressed out. Kids who post there are so much more qualified. Like one kid, for example, is taking junior level math classes at Harvey Mudd. Another one is asking if he should retake 2370 this week. It had me thinking maybe she should not have aim that high. I don’t want for her to get hurt.

Aim high.

Maybe she should stay off that group for now if it’s causing more harm than good

You don’t know unless you try.

Just checked College Board again and 7 out of 8 SAT scores are still pending after almost 3 weeks!! They only sent one score to the college that D was accepted to last week!! Really? How hard to send a few scores electronically? I am calling them tomorrow!! Ugh!!!

Are we prepared as parents to support our kids thru rejections? What do you plan to do? EA decisions are just over a month away.

Just found out that DS16 is one of three students at his HS that has been nominated and being considered for a $20,000 renewable scholarship given by a well known LAC in our state that awards this scholarship to one senior at every public HS in our county every year( 26 I think). If he should qualify for a larger award, he has the option to decline the scholarship for the larger one. So proud of him.

@Ballerina2016 I am thankful that D hasn’t fallen in love with any of her schools, so she is probably not getting to be devastated after a rejection. She will probably be sad for a few hours and after eating a big bowl of ice cream (and a glass of wine for me!), she will probably be over it (I hope).
