@carolinamom2boys I totally understand! It’s such a big transition for us as much as them (maybe slightly more for us…?)
@Waiting2exhale such a great story…I keep asking my S if he’s met any girls that may be a contender…and all he says is “they are all so pretty and nice that they are all contenders”…not sure I want to pursue that line of conversation…
@fretfulmother I love that I will send link to my S and see what he thinks! For betting staying / fitting bedding I bought those adjustable bed sheet/blanket fasteners / clips. They make many different types depending on your needs. Some that just span the corners to those that go from end to end length wise and width wise. Check them out on BBB or amazon. They are great for lofted beds to keep the blankets, top sheet, etc., where they are supposed to be.
@dyiu13 I think the credit card companies are not as free with credit cards anymore and it may be more difficult to get one in a students name unless they have a pretty substantial (for a student) and continuous work history. We tried to get my S one and it was a no go. We settled on getting him a card in his name under our account so he has for emergencies and agreed upon purchases but we control the reins.
On the line of thought regarding credit cards and the like for students…Did anyone know that it is very difficult if not impossible to get life insurance for a person under 21? We tried just in case (god forbid) anything were to happen and since we co-sign his student loans, we did not want to have to use our resources to pay off those mounting liabilities. What ever happened to Gerber Life? Now we have to wait a little over a year.
@lvmjac1 - Thank you! I never heard of those clips. I also showed the doggie zip-up to my DS16 and he loves it too and said, “if they made it big enough, I would actually want that. I think most college guys would.” LOL
It turns out they do seem to make the equivalent for longer beds, for about four times the price (argh) - a company called something like “bunkbedsbunker”. I was left thinking maybe we need the easy-make thing for all the beds in the house!
I’m just not a big BBB fan don’t know why. Both my S16 and my D17 are getting college stuff for the holidays this year because when I was shopping for him she kept wanting stuff too. Luckily we have an empty guest room closet or I should say had. It’s all stuff they would 100% need no matter where they go to school like a nice desk lamp, blanket, sheets, mattress cover, etc and I bought things after school started at such a good discount I’d happily donate anything they don’t want. I think I got 75% off or better on everything. We are not planning to do fridge or microwave but if room mate brings and he uses we would contribute to them or give them a gift card. He’s not big on leftovers and just wants an electric kettle for tea or ramen as he doesn’t drink coffee. My daughter found a comforter that is exactly her style on super clearance for $6 and she would never in a million years want to do the matchy matchy thing. Hers is neutral but with bright sheets so easy for room mate to pick something that meshes if they desire. It would be hard to clash with really. The big thing we need to wait on though is a warm coat and boots. If he goes to NY, MA, or IN he’s going to need a proper down coat. If he goes to CA, VA, or GA not so much…
We can drive anywhere but CA and even then with our frequent flyer program we could each bring 2 large suitcases of stuff and that would cover most of what he plans on bringing. Our big issue will be the tower computer he lovingly built but might barely qualify as a carry on item. He would be terrified to ship it
@dcplanner I too do not always prefer BBB. I find stuff in all different stores online or in my travels. I am always on the lookout for a bargain or two. I did find the perfect cube fit together storage thing at BBB on clearance in August right before I had to take my S to college. You could make it a four, three or two cube storage. It was perfect and with all my saved coupons I either got 20% off or $5.00 off. So it was a win win but I do not luck out with the comforter sets or other things. I do not like to get the dorm sets because they come with the twin XL comforter and my I prefer (and my son loved it) the full size comforter (which is bed is not lofted can hide things stored underneath the bed) and my kids like to wrap themselves in their covers. So I mix and match comforters and sheets sets in coordinating patterns and colors. My S colors are black grey and navy blue. Everything is one of those colors. Black curtains, grey sheets and pillow case, navy blue sham, navy blue comforter, and blue towels.
Question on the BBB coupons. Maybe it has been answered but there have been so many comments I have not been able to read everything. I know that the mailers never expire - or so I have been told. What about the emailed coupons. I have one that has an expiration date that I printed out. Can I use it past the date?
Congrads @3scoutsmom ! I am sure your holidays will be happy now!
So sorry that you are having a hard time @carolinamom2boys. I too get weepy over things–sometimes at odd times because I have time to think just a little too much or because I get caught off guard. I have gotten in the habit of just carrying tissues with me at all times. Really looking forward to our college visit trip next week so I can focus on the firsts.
@goodgrief I just wanted to tell you how amazing the staff at the scholar’s office is! D turned in her OU application on 10/14 and her status was still “complete and under review” yesterday. I thought this was taking a little long and was worried there might be an issue with something and she was getting antsy because she couldn’t complete her application to the school of music for her minor until she was accepted and had an ID number. I wrote an email to Mr Nunley at the scholars office at 4:15 asking if he could check on the status of her application. I got an almost immediate response that he’d look into it. At 4:31 I got an email notifying me that she has been admitted and giving me her sooner ID number so she can proceed with her application to the school of music. When they say they take care of their National Merit kids, they mean it! I hope you have a great visit!
@3scoutsmom - congratulations. Must be great to be done!
S is working away at the apps -I kind of feel helpless at this point. He still has a long list of schools to go and I fear some of them might just drop off the list at the end. But he is handling everything himself. So proud of that. I know he has several other commitments besides regular schoolwork and so far, is somehow managing to stay afloat.
He does have an academic acceptance to a school, but doesn’t have the artistic acceptance there yet. If he does hear back about that, it would be wonderful. This is a school that offers full tuition for national merit and if he’s accepted, would be a great choice! Keeping my fingers crossed
More congrats to so many of you! We are waiting on several now-hoping the mail tomorrow brings some responses, including the one D called last week and got a verbal acceptance with papers to come.
For anyone who’s kid took the Oct. 14 School Day SAT, D’s counselor got an email yesterday saying scores will be out Friday. LK-I know it’s not an issue for your son, but in case he does actually want his scores sent somewhere-try checking on Friday. I’m “so over” these testing companies. It’s just a money grab and I think colleges put entirely too much emphasis on them. This delay is really hurting some of D’s classmates.
I’m working today but D is off school, so she and her dance group are coming to work to use our stage to practice. I love having a really flexible workplace!
@Waiting2exhale thanks for that information, I will look into that. I only started thinking about it as my S went from in state school to OOS school where they do not give transfers much merit money. And while I never want to contemplate a day on this earth without anyone of my family, the reality is that unfortunately and heartbreakingly tragedies do happen all the time. So I began to think about the ramifications of such a tragedy and our liability with my S’s student loan debt. It’s not a terrible amount now but going into next year it will start to become significant enough to cause us hardship that if we were straddled with it. I think that life / payment insurance should be a fall back position to having a co-signer on these student loans. Just adding my 2 cents…
@Waiting2exhale & @lvmjac1 these tragedies do happen. My mother’s husband lost his son due to accidental alcohol/med combo. They are now paying off his loans. When my mother married her husband it was not even a consideration, but the son died about 2 years after they were married and her husband had cosigned the loans. Now they are responsible.
