Parents of the HS Class of 2016 (Part 1)

@lvmjac1 Go Tigers. I hope he gets those tickets . I need to do the CSS profile for one of the schools. Now you have me wondering about the deadline. I’d better check. How long does it take to complete.

Just checked. January 5th.

@lvmjac1 One of my S’s EA schools required the CSS by Nov. 15. I likened it to having a colonoscopy! ;)) It took me about a week to crunch all the numbers. I am impressed you got it done in one day!

Just wondering if anyone else was part of a pregnancy support group when they had their Class of 2016 baby? It occurred to me the other day that my son has been a ‘forum’ kid from day one. When I was pg with him, the due date groups were just starting online and I joined one. We are still together and have had many face to face get togethers over the years. And now here I am, finding info and support on a forum to help me navigate the college app process. It makes it so much easier to have all of this info to access and to have the camaraderie!

@CAMidwestMom I could have never made it this far with out the support on my Nov 97 Moms! It’s been interesting since our kids were all fall kids and depending on where they live some are HS class of 2015 and others class of 2016.

My DD’s EA school’s CSS priority dates are next year (for RD?, I am not sure). I sent CSS a week ago anyway. It need to be finalized in the end, I guess.

Tonight, DD finally said she needs to finish RD apps before the first EA result comes out. So finger crossed if she keeps her words.

@3scoutsmom We are in the same boat. I’m a Sept 97 Mom and about half the kids are freshman in college this year. Kind of cool to hear about everything they’re going through before having to do it ourselves.

@CAMidwestMom yes! I started out on Storksite I think it was called, with the group August 98 babies. Then when we got the ASD DX I ended up on the OASIS message board and I am still in daily communication with 8 other parents from that board. Total forum mom, here.

Letting out a huge monster sigh of relief here … and awaiting a major snowstorm, too. < Grew up in Chicago, lived in Miami, still getting used to Minnesota winters! I love the snow, just not the loooong winter. >

After much prodding and cajoling and editing help these past two days, my D’s college apps are basically done. As in, completely. I almost can’t believe it.

There were only 8, with two rolling (safeties), three EAs, two Dec. 1 deadlines (for merit), and one RD (but no essays, so she just submitted it).

I’ve asked her if she wants to look around more, but she said she’s completely fine with one of her safeties (already admitted) so I guess that’s it.

Um, now what?

I’ve been with the same “expecting group” since early 1999. D is the first of the kids to graduate, since she is quite early, having started K a year ahead and is now graduating in what would have been her junior year. All my “Nov 99” mom friends are anxiously waiting to see what one of “their” kids will end up doing for college. And they ask me lots of questions about the process. It’s been great having these friends for support all these years-I am much older than most of them, as D was my last at 40 and most of them were first-timers. We’ve been through weddings, divorces, adoptions, some even have grandchildren (obviously not the first-timers!). Quite a few of us are RL friends and many of us are still in touch.

D is looking at colleges in VERY different weather than Seattle gets .We deliberately toured some during the middle of summer so she could see what she was up against. It didn’t phase her. H was shocked that some do not have AC for freshmen dorms and tells everyone who asks what stood out about the tours about the lack of AC.

@CAMidwestMom, let’s hope we continue to check in with each other on this list and even have face-to-face get togethers over the years. I like that idea.

@MidwestMomTo2, now the hardest part: we wait.

Like many of you expressed (now a few pages back…I got behind this weekend), the holidays have triggered nostalgia and some sadness about DD leaving. I hope this is not pure selfishness: she made several of the Thanksgiving side dishes and decorated an entire Christmas tree for me during. I think she will need to come home for Thanksgiving every year. :x

I’m sticking my toe in here after lurking on CC for at least a year, hence the name. Wish I could’ve thought of a better one. My D has submitted two EA apps so far – one super reach, one safety – and has a batch of RDs due Jan. 1. I was part of one of those birth month groups too, still am.

Welcome @delurk1!

With D I’ve been part of a Moms group since she was an infant. Several of us still get together once a month for dinner. D is the first kid to be going thru the college process, since she skipped a grade. S19 is definitely a forum baby. Our group migrated from yahoo groups to FB many years ago and we all stay in touch regularly. We’ve been through it all together. Sleepless nights, croup, potty training etc and now this. Crazy!

@EastGrad oh yes. The wait. It will be a long one.

I have not been on here in 10 days…and there are almost 20 pages of posts! Wow…not sure how long it will take me to wade through it all!

We are visiting the southeast for the holidays and some college visits. A few days ago at home it was a high of 24 degrees and low of 10 degrees with snow! Needless to say, we are happy to be in 70-80 degree weather…and it does make one really consider the benefits of college in a warm locale! Visited one college last week - with surprisingly positive reviews from S16! Four more to visit this next week before flying back home (to the frigid northwest-ugh!).

@CAMidwestMom - YES! I am still on May98 and in fact, I was thinking that very question a few days ago. Our ‘16 kids are absolutely prime in the start of the “forum pregnancy/babies” era. I remember when I joined “MayMoms” it was full of the previous years’ moms who had 3-month-olds and they seemed way ancient. And then the forums split into years so everyone could stay together even after the pregnancies (which I guess the founders hadn’t thought would be desirable). For whatever reason, the forums for my younger kids didn’t stick together.

Welcome delurk1

I agree that filing out the CSS profile is like getting a colonoscopy! Too true. We do not have a business but it is ridiculously difficult to attempt to figure out a lot of the numbers they want…taxable income for 2016? really…that is why I have my taxes professionally prepared (and what…I am… no wait the student is expected to call their parents’ tax preparer to complete?. They word it as if the students could be filling out this form…really a 17 year old is supposed to know our interest or dividend income, itemized deductions or taxable income? It’s just silly frustrating. Oh and how many of our kids have trust funds…LOL…don’t we all wish. That is why we are going through the torture of filling out FAFSA and CSS profiles!?

And believe me its all on account of being here with all you great people that I was able to complete the torture in 3 1/2 hours. A lot of you have been discussing it and I was intending on attempting it this coming weekend anyway so I had all the forms and information printed out and handy to help complete it…Thanks all!

I am envious of many of you that were involved in pregnancy and birth forums…now that I have been a part of one I know how helpful and encouraging it would have been to have been a part of that. Especially since S14 was 7 weeks premature! Hard to believe it now. I am very thankful to have stumbled upon and to be a part of this forum.

I think it would be fun @EastGrad to keep in touch as continue to go through this process and after they go off to their respective colleges and beyond to see how things work out. I am definitely in for that!

Welcome, @delurk1 !

@CAMidwestMom
I never belonged to a pregnancy support group online, but I did join an online book club (spun off from AOL’s MomsOnline) when I was on bedrest and bored silly. Four of us had spring 98 babies (five total, since I have twins)-- and all but my D are band kids! We still have most of the original members of the group, and it’s become, in a way, the extended family that I really don’t otherwise have. We’re all spread out across the country (and briefly, into Europe), but I’ve met most of the group at one point or another, and we had a “family reunion” at one point when the kids were younger and more portable.

S had his senior photos done this weekend (D is next weekend) and I’ve seen a couple of the first shots to be finished because the photographer is a family friend. They’re gorgeous, but he looks like suh a grown man. Seriously, he’s thirty in those photos. How does this even happen? He was three a minute ago.

Welcome @delurk1 !

I had a Lamaze group that stuck together for years after our births (we went through both 1996 and 1998 pregnancies together). Unfortunately we dispersed and we’re only in touch with one other family now. Before S14 I participated in a rec.pregnancy UseNet forum (ancient history!). Now there’s a thriving college-specific FB group for parents that started in his first year. Hope we have something similar for S16.

UC application is done but won’t be submitted until later today. Hope there aren’t any server problems. I think S16 still plans to do the two that are due tomorrow, also. Another LAC hit the dust over the holidays but we might replace with an RD recommendation from @AsleepAtTheWheel. Like

Didn’t much like the school senior photos so I’m likely to get our own photographer. Would have been better to do this before all the leaves fell off the trees. Now I guess I have to wait for spring for outdoor photos. If I’m going to pay an arm and a leg I want to actually like the photos.
