Parents of the HS Class of 2016 (Part 1)

Congrats @BeeDAre .

Congrats @BeeDAre !

No idea :-SS since the LOR for Berkeley is brand new. They should be excellent, so no worries there.

Congrats @BeeDAre Yay for good news!

Congrats to your D @BeeDAre!
@Undercovermom1 I hope that is a good sign. Keeping my fingers n toes crossed for your D!

@BeeDAre, quite the exciting day at your house! Decisions, decisions! I feel like some of these scholarship decision pushes (and the ubiquitous request for refundable housing deposits) are a way of shifting the student’s mindset to ā€œI’m probably attending there.ā€ Annoying, but part of the college game these days, I suppose.

@Undercovermom1, I found myself browsing the Berkeley forum, just because I am intrigued by the LOR drama, lol. Glad to hear your student received one!

@Undercovermom1 we are counting it as a good thing!!!

Congratulations, @BeeDAre, and I think you made a good call on letting that second, competitive scholarship opportunity go by. Sometimes time is just more important than the money.

@Undercovermom1 , I agree that sounds promising. Good luck!

GO TIGERS TONIGHT!

@lvmjac1 Not looking good so far. Is your son at the game?

Yes he is there n hopefully the Tigers will prevail!

Newbie question: when our kids pick their college to go to, do we bold it in the list of admitted colleges on that other thread? If it’s up in the air, this is something I think would be cool, so we still see the whole list we’ve been seeing, and then it’s clear what was chosen.

I heard that many schools set May 1 as a deposit day, so have to decide before May 1. But I think each school probably have different time frame. After May 1, waitlist rolls in.

@NYDad513 May 1st is National Decision Day. For all the schools S applied to last year, all decisions had to be made and all deposits had to be in by May 1st (were were down to 11:55pm on April 30th!). All the kids wear their school shirts to school that day and lots of pictures are taken. From what we’ve seen, if you’re waitlisted, you still have to commit to another school, pay your deposit and be willing to lose it to take a waitlisted spot (we were debating that option, so I know it intimately). Rolling admission schools may have different rules, but the 2 rolling admission schools S applied to had the stipulation that if you were accepted before May 1st, your deposit needs to be in May 1st.

That was our experience last year for what its worth.

@fretfulmother I think I saw that on a past year board. It makes sense to bold the final choice.

Well, D was in Madrigals rehearsals all this week, and tonight was the second, and last Madrigals Dinner performance
Husband and I want to see the show. Very enjoyable. Food was awful, lol, but oh well - I honestly wasn’t expecting it to be great, and I went to hear the singers and musicians, anyway! Got some photos of D and the other kids in their medieval costumes.

There is an after-party at someone’s house, and I believe this is D’s first ā€œrealā€ high school party, honestly - the kind at someone’s house. We know the hostess and her parents very well, and parents are chaperoning the party, so that’s good.

So, I doubt she will get around to writing that essay for the competitive scholarship due by Sunday night …
But honestly, I’d much rather she go to the party and have fun with her friends tonight. She deserves it, and it will be good for her to not think about school or college apps for a few hours. I honestly believe it’s the healthier option for her right now, :). I agree, @petrichor11 , sometimes money is not the most important thing.

@LKnomad @fretfulmother Two years ago the list got so big we moved the whole thing to a Google doc and then used red italics to indicate the final choices. Last year the list didn’t get that large and they might have had a separate thread for the final decisions. I’m hoping this year we’ll have it all in one place because it is a fun to watch the process unfold.

S still hasn’t heard anything from Berkeley about the LoR. He submitted his app in the middle of the day on the due date.

No LoR request from Berkeley or UCLA here either. App was submitted a couple of days before due date.

YAHOOOOOOO CLEMSON! ACC CHAMPS!!!

@smilla I think it’s only Berkeley that might request them this application season.

D submitted a scholarship app today. Her next college apps aren’t due until 1/1 and 1/15 so she has a little bit of a break (if you want to call prepping for and then taking finals a break). Do your kids take final before or after the holidays? D has them before and S19 takes them after. Really looking forward to the kids’winter vacation although I do hope it’s preceded by some acceptances!
