Parents of the HS Class of 2016 (Part 1)

Welcome @mom2one98 - I know there are several on this thread that will hopefully be able to help you & your DD.

I started CSS- stopped. >:P

Decided to do something more uplifting. Just ordered graduation announcements, thank you notes & DS’s cap and gown. Going to embrace the celebration!

Well my excitement was short lived. While I was accepted to State University for information technology, I just found out that I somehow was rejected at their business school. Can’t understand it since I spent 20 years working in corporate environment, started a private school still thriving, served on governing boards and have a 4.0 GPA. Not sure what else I could have done To Be more competitive than the high school / transfer applicants that are applying there. I could actually probably teach some of the business classes lol. I am completely stunned.

Oh no! @cakeisgreat I am sorry to hear that. Is there an appeal process? I can’t believe you didn’t get in.

How disappointing @cakeisgreat . Now what?

Definitely their loss @cakeisgreat

I’m sorry, @cakeisgreat ! What happens now?

Ouch! That makes no sense @cakeisgreat . I think you should consult the adcom or Dean of that school to make sure it wasn’t an accident. State U doesn’t seem to be fulfilling its mission.

:frowning: I’m sorry @cakeisgreat I hope you are still able to achieve your dreams.

That is a bummer @cakeisgreat

@cakeisgreat - we are pulling for you!!

Re Pitt - totally agree, my DS applied there last fall and the process was very smooth. He did have LoR sent after hearing they have an impact on merit aid.

Re specialized scholarships - I still remember my freshman year of college, going to the FA office to see what was posted that I could apply to. I was excited to see “Jewish Women’s Scholarship” until I read the fine print: “need not be Jewish; must be a legal resident of New York state” Oh well!

Well poo @cakeisgreat!

Sorry to hear that.

@mom2one98 the scholarship deadline is exactly why D didn’t apply. She was ready to push to get the app done (adding it to her list last minute) but without the merit opportunities, it would be unaffordable for us.

@cakeisgreat It might be worth contacting someone in the department to see what happened. That makes no sense.

Well, my son has all 12 applications in! Today he and I did the FAFSA and the Profile! He tried to get out of the profile by saying that he didn’t have any time and to check back with him next week, and I informed him that if he didn’t have any time to go over the profile then he wasn’t going to any of the schools that needed the profile, because he won’t be getting any financial aid! He came to his senses.

Now on to outside scholarships. (At least those that are left to apply to.)

@CAMidwestMom, @bookmom7, @Undercovermom1

Thank you for replying. I can’t believe we missed the 12/1 deadline. I saw something come in the mail but forgot about it. @camidwesstmom, D wants to go to CA so many of the UC and CSU schools and some privates. We’re out of state but I’m going to move there with her.

@momtoone98 Has she applied to other private colleges here in Cali. Many are gap fill, especially schools like the Claremonts. The UCs would be full pay so be careful of sticker shock.

Yay! @LKnomad I’m sure you are relieved

@cakeisgreat , ugh, really?!! How incredibly disappointing!

@LKnomad , hooray! What a relief to get that done. I love his desire to have you “check back” with him next week, lol.

So, D16 is packing for a visit to College of Wooster on Sun/Mon and we check the weather report…high of 12 on Monday. Keep in mind that we live in Texas, it was 72 yesterday.

D16: “What? 12? You misread, you mean 21?”

Me: “No Dear, 12! Remember, if it is 12 in Wooster it is probably 12 in Pittsburgh and at every other school you have applied to. We warned you it would be cold in the winter” (Her father is from Rochester, NY and I am from the snowbelt of Northern Ohio)

D16: “Yeah, but I was thinking like 30, not 12”

Me: “Girlfriend it will be 30 on a good day for most of February! Your out of luck now, too late to apply anywhere warm!”

Not for nothing, we lived in Chicago until she was in kindergarten and then in Northern VA during her middle school years. We have experienced some record snowfalls, so she is not completely unfamiliar with cold and snow. Good thing she got a winter coat, boots, ear warmer and mittens for Christmas!

Warning Brag D16 competed at her regional Business Professional of America Competition today. She placed 2nd in her individual event; Administrative Research. Her small group placed 2nd for Global Marketing. So she will move on to the State competition in March for both events. I keep asking her if she wants to change her major to business, but she says no.

@Skates76 - Drexel was a mess for us too coupled with a substantial change in the program D16 wants AFTER she applied. It has slipped to the very bottom for D16 too.

@LKnomad - Yay, done with the apps and you’ve tackled FAFSA! Go team!

@cakeisgreat - Sorry about the Business school. I don’t know what else you could do to beef up that stellar record either…

@cakeisgreat: time to advocate…not for DC16…but for yourself! I’m sure you’ve had a lot of practice by now. Remember, you have this ALL the members of this thread rooting for you.

@labegg As a life long upstate New Yorker, I am totally laughing at your D’s remarks. What is her major going to be at the moment?

@labegg At least there’s no snow in MA!
