Parents of the HS Class of 2016 (Part 1)

@readingclaygirl She has applied to several BS/DPT programs as well as health/rehabilitative science and one weird off topic Food Science major. She wants to minor in music. Her ultimate goal is to be a physical therapist with a teach piano lessons on the side.

S has an interview Monday with a school.

Btw, @cakeisgreat, congratulations on your acceptance. I use to work with a teacher who went into teaching as a second career. Her and her husband owned a construction business and when they were in their early 50’s they sold it and retired. When she was 55 they were on a camping vacation and she decided she wanted to go back to school and become a teacher. She worked for about 5 years and retired again.

Good luck to your son@mysonsdad

We are expecting a HIGH here of -9 tomorrow. Everywhere D has applied will be warmer!

Yep, it’s supposed to be 17, low 8 on Monday in Pittsburgh, but partly sunny

Yes, 30 would be considered quite warm this time of year.

Pitt has a March 1 priority deadline for FAFSA, and we were getting FA packages in April.

There is not much aid to be had other than federal and state grants, maybe work study if you have low EFC and some people on CC were reporting that they received a need based grant from Pitt.

But with the scholarship D got we could afford it.

@mysonsdad: Good luck to your son, Mysonsdad. May it all go really, really well.

S is still waiting to hear from a school in MN. He has all six cities where his prospective schools are located on his iPhone, and he’s keeping a close eye on the weather. His perfect climate is probably the one EA school that he’s already pretty much taken off his list entirely.

@cakeisgreat - I’m a returning PhD student myself, and it took a few conversations with people to get them past the idea that I was just ā€œdabblingā€ - or crazy. Don’t give up. I hope you can reach out to someone on Tuesday and make a case for full admission. Keep us posted!

Well, we did the FAFSA tonight. I was expecting it to be crazy, but that is CRAZY. Wow. Really different from the NPCs we’d done too, and we do not have any crazy weird stuff going on (married, stable income, not business owners, no extra houses, etc). Will have to recheck that some numbers didn’t get mis-entered or something.

DD did two interviews today. One was about 45 mins interview and another one is about 10 mins(?). 10 mins interview was for her safest school and I am not sure that is normal for them. She did not felt bad for 10 mins interview because interviewer were very nice. Anyway, I am happy she did two interviews today because it must be very annoying if she went to the city just for 10 mins interview.

10 minutes is shockingly short for an interview, especially an in person one. From my own experience and that of my friends, I’m guessing about 30 minutes is average for an interview, give or take. How did she feel about the 40 minute one? @DAPIStained

@readingclaygirl DD thinks it went well. She said she answered well. 10 mins interview was a kind of shock to me, too. Anyway, the school is the safest school she’s applying. So I don’t worry too much about a short interview.

@Mysonsdad good luck to your son on the interview. @DAPIStained glad the interviews went well for your D. @cakeisgreat I am so impressed with your pursuit of your degree. I hope you are able to get the administration to reconsider the admission to the business school. If they won’t relent perhaps you can check into the possibility of taking classes in the business school even though you are not ā€œinā€ that specific college. (My nephew is taking business classes at our state uni even though he is in the engineering and math college at that university.) Get some internships in the area of business you are interested in and show the potential employers how great you are. If you have any doubts about your employability bear in mind my MIL went back to school after having 5 kids. She is in her 80’s and just retired. My father is also in his 80’s and is still working; he is thinking about retiring in the next year or so…maybe…
@labegg Congrats on your D’s wins. That is really exciting!
@LKnomad congrats on the finished apps. 12 apps is quite an accomplishment.

And as long as there is a **bragging warning **available I just want to point out how hardy I am… the temperature is currenlty -8 and the wind chill here is -30 and I left the house today. @2manybooks food for thought for your S. We ask ourselves everyday why our ancestors settled here.

@cakeisgreat I’m so sorry. That doesn’t make sense at all.

@Mysonsdad Your son will knock it out of the park!

Have any of your kids decided how their graduation announcements will look like? When I was in HS, it was customary to send a grad ceremony invitation, which was white with text only, similar to a wedding invite. I only sent it to friends and relatives in our area who would probably attend. I sent my graduation photo out with my thank you notes.

I was chatting with a friend about announcements the other day and mentioned seeing kids in recent years send out photo cards (like holiday cards) that included the grad ceremony details. She said that was the fad now. I asked, even if you know that person/family lives in another state and can’t come? She said yes, that’s the way kids do it now.

I was thinking my S would send out photo cards, but only include the ceremony info on a separate note to those who can/might come. Thoughts? What are you all planning on doing?

Can you tell I’m getting antsy on this waiting bench? ;))

@happymochi we won’t be doing any kind of announcements. We don’t have really any people we would send them to. Immediate family all live in the same city and family on my husband’s side don’t speak English and live in another country. I do see that those photo cards are a thing, though. My son got a packet of various things he could buy including rings, announcements, clothing, etc. There were many options for announcements with photos.

I read today that one person had a 3 hour interview!! That is an interview!!

Wow, it’s -7 here. I had no idea I had so many frozen friends online.

In possibly related news, I just books a flight for my D to visit Arizona State by herself in February. I’m only slightly, completely freaked out. She’s pretty travel savvy. It’s a nonstop flight, and there’s a full schedule and sleepover for her once there. She’ll be looking at the Barret Honors program and the highly regarded Cronkite School of Journalism. Because she didn’t apply to a single school in state, I keep reminding myself that she’ll be traveling solo all the time next year.

Welcome, @mom2one98. It’s true the USC merit deadline has passed. In fact, letters schould be going out within the next 10 days or so with scholarship (and early admission) news, according to other CC threads.

Congrats on finishing the FAFSA, @Booajo. We join you there! In the end, I just closed my eyes and sent. Hopefully it’ll be close to actual numbers. (Our income went was different this year than last. Never have I felt worse about making more money!)

@happymochi we also got a few announcements with photos. I really enjoyed seeing the photos in the announcements and learning the kids’ plans post high school even if we were not on the list of those invited to the ceremony. (Most didn’t give us any details about the ceremony.)

Kids today are doing the photo cards instead of the envelopes of the past. I have told some people they will get announcements but I asked them not to send money. When D11 graduated I sent out announcements just to inform people and some people who I don’t really know D sent money. I ended up sending it back.

@cakeisgreat, sorry to hear the bad news, best of luck to you.

As for S interview, he has said he wishes he could get the chance to do an interview because he feels that person to person is his strongest asset, so we will see. This is for the most selective college he applied to other than his EA college.

At LKNomad, congratulations on being done.

Regarding Powerball, my sister lives in Chino Hills and I have been to the 7-11 where the winning ticket was sold. I just wish I had purchased one from there recently.

Congrats to your DD @labegg ! May her recent success keep her warm. This weekend cold snap is unusually extreme. Yes, it gets cold but there is an unusual pattern making it colder farther south this weekend. She is seeing the worst.

Glad to hear that interviews are going well for many. Good luck to those with more to come. DS has not had to do any except informal ones with admissions representatives at his high school and during campus visits. I was actually included in a couple of the on campus ones and it was great to see him interact with the reps. Who is this articulate young man and what has he done with my boy of few words? I can tell at which school he was most comfortable but it remains to be seen if that is the one he will pick.

DS has finally heard from the last school he applied to! Some would say he did not reach high enough since he got in to them all, but he would say he made good decisions as to where to concentrate his efforts. He has yet to receive any scholarship notice from 5. 1 of those likely will offer 0, so to us that is his ā€œreachā€. That school has lost its appeal so there will not be any disappointment to manage, yet he would be very pleased to receive any scholarship at all from them. We will see if any scholarship offers are large enough to make him reconsider his final two becoming the final 3 or 4.
