Parents of the HS Class of 2016 (Part 1)

@kittymom, I know, he has had better luck with UCLA, just the whole process is wearing me out.

@Mysonsdad It is very tiring and certainly not for sissies.

@carolinamom2boys Maybe I am becoming a sissy!! Lol a while back some parents on here were talking about how they are worriers, add me to the group. I just hate the anticipation only to be let down.

Oh sorry, Ballerina2016, I just saw your D got in, congratulations to her.

It’s funny, but I am taking this harder than S. He is up in Big Bear (a mountain area here in So. Cal) camping. Him and two friends decided they would get a tent and pull over and hike somewhere and set up the tent. His two friends come from families were the parents don’t do much in the way of parenting and the kids have raised themselves. I only let him go because a fourth friend of his was supposed to go and I figured if his parents are letting their S go, I will let S go. Just before they left they made a last second stop at my house and I asked where fourth friend was and S told me that his parents changed their mind and he can’t go. Personally, I am hoping it is freezing tonight and they come home.

CONGRATS @kittymom1102 @indsfolax @MidwestMomof2 and anyone else I missed.
@Mysonsdad and @Undercovermom1 sorry about the disappointment today the whole process is really stressful.

How many is 1.5% at UCB? I was under the impression they wait until March 1st to announce and didn’t know they have an earlier release for some.

@texaspg 2000 were accepted today. Some with scholarships invites and other without.

Great news, @sseamom! Congrats to the children of @Bookworm7, @3scoutsmom, and @Themommymommy! Also, congrats to @carolinamom2boys for honors, and @indsfolax and @Ballerina016 for the Cal acceptances. And @kittymom1102, for your flagship acceptance. <:-P <:-P <:-P <:-P Well deserved, one and all! Whew! All this horn-blowing takes my breath away!

Ditto, that!

Wow! Hard to keep up! Congratulation to all!

@EastGrad How did you manage to include everyone? OMG

I have a hard time keeping track of everyone’s news =D> =D>

It WAS another good Friday! Congrats to all. <:-P

Congrats to all who had good news since the last time I posted congratulations a few hours ago!!! Woo-hoo, party time Friday…but an indoor party because it is just ridiculous cold here and getting colder…brrr!!

Congratulations to all with good news!!!

So sorry to hear you are discouraged @Mysonsdad ! I am confident your DS’s hard work will be rewarded. We just do not know in what way yet. Here, have your comforting meal of choice with me while we wait.

My D was finally notified by her school today that she’s NMF! She was called down to the office and they gave her the certificate. I don’t think they have any other recognition other than announcing the students’ names.

Congrats to all those who got accepted to Berkeley today and to all the other NMF’s, as well as anyone else who got good news today! I love ending the week on a good note!

:D/ I found an emoji that does the Happy Dance along with me while I celebrate all the good news on this thread! And, good news or not, ALL our kids are good enough, smart enough, and doggone it, we love them!

Definitely a busy end of the week for many of you - congratulations to your S’s and D’s on their acceptances and news of scholarships! We learned a lot of updates related to our S’s decisions - he learned that he did not receive an outside scholarship/internship that he applied for, and his second EA admission school confirmed that he would not be receiving a scholarship, so both of those were not great to hear. But, he got an email from the 3rd school that he applied to telling him that his financial aid package was ready for consideration, even though the portal said ā€œappliedā€ but no decision as of a few days ago and no mail from them since early Dec. Well, I decided to check the portal and it looks like he has been admitted today, which is exciting to hear because it was a bit of a reach school for him! All of this news seems to have helped him narrow down his choice, and he’s leaning strongly toward the first school that accepted him and that offered him a partial scholarship. It seems like a great fit for him, the least expensive for us (yay!), and far enough away for him to not come home every weekend but still close enough in an emergency by car (2 1/2 hours away). I thought he’d be disappointed after two declines on scholarship offers, but I think it helped him feel better about the school he’s chosen. We’ll see - he still plans to go to the admitted student days for both (maybe all 3) in April but I wish he’d just pick now

Quick question - if we filled out FAFSA with estimates from last year’s tax return, but we’ve learned that we won’t be eligible for any aid for the schools he’s been accepted at, do we need to bother with updating the FAFSA or can we just ignore/cancel it? Doesn’t seem to be worth the hassle of revising when we file our taxes if there’s no way we will get any aid from it.

Congrats to your S! @lifegarding And to your D @Mom2jl

@lifegarding Some schools require a FAFSA on file in order to get merit packages & scholarships. Always best to check with the FA office. I emailed three schools on the top of my D’s list. 2 said the FAFSA was not necessary to receive merit packages and 1 said the FAFSA was definitely required in order to accept merit scholarships. So when in doubt, ask the school in question.

Thanks, @readingclaygirl and @Midwest67. For the FAFSA, I will check with the school that offered him a merit package and see if they need it completed. If they don’t, I am not sure if I still need to complete the process since we started it with the initial values. Once we find out if the school needs it, we’ll check with the staff at the FAFSA office.

Congratulations @Mom2jl and @lifegarding. Seems like a wonderful day.

@Ballerina2016, if you didn’t see my other post, congratulations to your D. I wonder what it is about these schools. Why is it your school does so well with UCB and mine with UCLA? My school may have a pretty good success rate with UCB, but maybe we don’t have that many kids apply so I don’t think we are as successful. It makes me wonder.
