Parents of the HS Class of 2016 (Part 1)

I know they say they do not but off the record do the UC schools “talk” to each other or share application or scholarship information if students apply to more than one campus? D applied to 6 campuses but really one wants to go to 1. Looking back we probably would have only applied to 1 or 2 but everything was so rushed at the time. We know what admission officers say and do could be very different when reviewing applications. Thoughts anyone?

@mom2one98, they share SAT scores and other information, in this day and age of computers how hard would it be to put in the information and share it? A few years ago a kid I know got the Regents to UCLA, & Berkeley and got it automatically (no essays) to UCI. They had great grades, but sub par SAT scores. I should have had S apply there also. Yesterday on the UCB board the “under review” message disappeared just minutes before the results came out. Someone called Berkeley and they were told there was no connection between the “under review” message disappearing and getting the Regents invite. Sure enough, a few minutes later the students whose message disappeared got the Regents notice. I am not accusing them of lying, but there may be some things they are supposed to keep secret, admitting to sharing information may be one of the things they may not tell others they do.

I don’t know @Undercovermom1 and @mom2jl kids stats, so I am not sure if it is actually a Tuft’s syndrome.

D16 braved the -15 degree windchill out there today to check the mail and found her letter had arrived from NMSC naming her as an NMF!!! We won’t get into the fact that her school letter and the actual certificate went out at least a week earlier and not a peep from her GC or the school yet.

Ironic or Simone trying to tell her something since she received her letter in this weather when her top NMF school is in Florida (-;

Thank you @EastGrad

The UC process is interesting.

What exactly is Chancellors vs Regents vs whatever the third one was?

Does the early date always involve a scholarship or hint of one?

Has anyone so far gotten the early admit from more than one school?

@Mysonsdad @Ballerina016 I think it is possible they are protecting yield. I know a wiz kid who got into MIT, Caltech, Berkeley, and UCLA, but was denied at UC Davis. The interesting thing is that he was invited to Regents/Honors (can’t remember which) there but then was ultimately denied. His mom believes that it was yield protection. Just one data point that makes you go hmmm…

@kittymom1102 Congratulations!

@texaspg as far as I know, only Berkeley did the early date admit so no one has been admitted to more than one school. I haven’t heard from any of my students being admitted to any UC’s yet so I imagine only Berkeley is it. The early date is an invite to apply for Regents, so it does involve a scholarship, however, Berkeley did admit some kids this year without offering the scholarship. I don’t know what the Chancellors scholarship is, but the Regents is a guaranteed amout of money (like $2000/year) and they make up the rest that student or family is expected to pay.It comes with other perks such as early registration, guaranteed parking and housing and a mentor. The third scholarship is the alumni scholarship which according to a thread here on CC, invites go out to about 4,000 UCLA applicants, but anyone can apply, it offers $4,000-$20,000 over four years. At Berkeley, it is the alumni leadership scholarship and invites go out to everyone who applies for admission. In other words, it is not as selective as UCLA’s alumni scholarships. I don’t know how scholarships work at other UC’s.

@happymochi, I was reading somewhere else that they think that is the reason why Berkeley did early admittance, was to protect their yield.

@Mysonsdad That is interesting. Somehow I never would have thought that Berkeley, of all schools, would be concerned about yield.

I don’t envy you all with kiddos in the UC game. Trying to make sense out of the senseless. Yikes.

I missed so much in a couple of days!! Congratulations to all for the terrific news. :slight_smile:

@Mysonsdad Thanks. I know they claim to not share status with each other but I really wonder. I mean your son - nothing from UCB, regents from UCLA and nothing from UCSB. Ballerina’s daughter - UCB accepted, UCLA nothing, UCSB ? I have not seen anyone with both UCB and UCLA but have seen a lot with nothing from either. I know we’re all trying to figure out if there is a pattern and if they talk to each other like well you give this girl regents and we’ll give her an alumni scholarship invite or whatever. Let’s not give this girl UCLA but we’ll throw her a bone to UCSB. This is all driving me crazy and it will still be another six weeks until we hear from choices 1 and 2 but at the same time we do not even have a number 3 yet (there are two possibilities that will be narrowed down in 4-5 weeks after we visit). And then the money part. That’s another layer. It’s all just getting to me and I’m sure the rest of us parents who are in this holding pattern. [End Venting]

@Mysonsdad I have to say that from the outside looing in the whole UC process seems maddeningly complex and arbitrary. Wasn’t it also your DC that was subject to the insane EC verification that practically turned into an inquisition? Oy, I feel for you and admire your tenacity and resilience in weathering all of this.

@skates76 That was Lknomad’s son.

Just went to the mailbox, and guess what was there? An invite to UCSB regents weekend. @Ballerina2016 check your mailbox. S portal did not change. The invite only says “registration and light refreshments.” Didn’t someone say admits get that?

Yes, it was snail mail only.

@mom2one98 Add my S to that confusing list - UCLA regents + alumni, UCB alumni email but no acceptance/regents.

@Mysonsdad Good news after all! Congrats!

@Undercovermom1 Ohhh, no one said that

@happymochi thank you

@mysonsdad congrats! LOL, I did say D received it “in the mail”. Sorry to have caused undue stress.
