Parents of the HS Class of 2016 (Part 1)

@mom2one98 - this is the analysis I was looking for from Californians. I see no rhyme or reason for the various outcomes and they seem as arbitrary as private school admissions but may be people can see a pattern if we start tracking who is getting what in a rational way?

When I was playing with admissions about 6 years ago, I applied for UK admissions for D12. They allow you to apply only to 5 schools overall and limit you to either Oxford or Cambridge but not both. I wonder if UCB and UCLA work similarly but without stating it in writing?

Is the consensus that UCSB letter is equal to an admission?

@texaspg but a small amount got both. UCB and UCLA

@Mysonsdad Great news!!

@carolinamom2boys I thought it might have been someone else, I should have gone back and looked it up instead of relying on an unreliable memory, but it was still the UC system, right?

We had one or two schools that did really goofy stuff to the point that one almost wondered if they were anti-recruiting the students, but they weren’t in a system like the UC’s and were easy to dismiss from consideration.

Yes it was UC schools @Skates76 .

Holy cow! The UC system seems like a micro ivy system
[somewhat] completely random and arbitrary but with an even more convoluted, unpredictable process [perhaps]! I have been so stressed for all of you and your kiddos that are weathering the storm.

@Mysonsdad @Ballerina2016 and the rest of you with sights set on California
I am going to make an extra batch or two of margaritas just for you at the May 1st virtual bash we are planning!

At times we have a mini pity-party here with bumps in our personal “road”
but thanking our lucky stars that we do not have to deal with what all of you are dealing with regarding the UCs! Hang.In.There.

Congratulations @Mysonsdad Still no mailing from UCSB here. Our snail mail is strange and we always get it few days later after you mention it here.

To make our non California friends head spin even more here is another piece of the puzzle. Cal Poly SLO is releasing decisions now. They do it in very convoluted way. OOS first, then by major or by school alphabetical. DD applied computer science or something similar I don’t know now since it was her safety. Anyway, I think CS decisions are out already and she didn’t hear anything. So we have UCB and USC early admission and nothing from UCSB and Cal Poly SLO.

@palm715

Thank you, for the link to that 2004 post. That one should be permanently set at the top of the thread list.

So very true.

However, remember back in the day that university profs would (I experienced this / perhaps some still do) tell students in lecture halls to “look at the student to your right and the one to your left; one of you will fail / drop out” and not think twice about it. Most / many of them didn’t consider it to be their responsibility to make sure to the best of their ability that all students passed. And I’m not talking about lowering standards.

Some concerns are valid with regard to the academic culture
 the attitude toward student success
 the professors understanding of their role as a teacher and their teaching skills.

This is what matters.

Congratulations @Mysonsdad <:-P

Good Luck @Ballerina016 [-O<

Greetings from the Doctor Who con in Los Angeles. @Skates76 it is my son who has the crazy verification. Last we checked he had an email that said they got his latest attempt at verification and that they would let him know if the needed more, then nothing. I don’t trust them to get it right, but my son does. At this time we have no UCLA or UCB regents. This makes me nervous. UCI honors program should be next. If he is not invited, I think we may have a problem. We made an agreement today. If I stop talking about college during this convention (3 days) he will call the number on the verification form and double check that all is well. I am secretly writing this post while he looks the other way

@Ballerina2016 I wouldn’t give up on SLO yet. Girls (especially smart girls like your D) in engineering are a commodity. Either way, she has USC and Berkeley. Those are some great options.

@kittymom1102 I love to see your avatar. Please post more.

@mysonsdad - didn’t your son receive an admission in 11th from one of the Cal State schools? There are some schools giving admissions early on without an application?

@Lknomad, I am really hoping for good things for your son. Glad he gets a few days of distraction!

What he got in 11th grade was basically a guaranteed admission if he stayed in the top 1% of students in the county. So it was an admittance with stipulations. It also came with a $25,000 scholarship and all the other perks of a Regents. 4 years of tuition is $26,000, so all but $1,000 was covered. The Superintendent of County Schools hand selects the top 1% of students and invites them to a reception and tour of the school. It came as a complete surprise to us. S did have to fill out the application this year, send his transcripts (to let them know his grades hadn’t slipped) and send an email stating he was still interested in the scholarship. AND pay the $55 application fee. I guess $25,000 is their limit, $25,055 is too much.

@Mysonsdad I think the Chancellor’s reception at UCSB is not a scholarship and is not related to the Regents scholarship. I think it’s just sent out to the top applicants and is an indication of likely admission. D is another of the California kids waiting to hear from Cal Poly SLO as a math major. I think some of the portals have changed, but only some emails have come out. I agree that the whole California system is crazy, which makes me worry about D’s top UC choice which is UCLA. She got neither the alumni nor Regents scholarship invitation, so I’m very nervous.

@sseamom Congratulations!

This sounds like a great deal. Is it specific to one college in California or is there a list of colleges where he can get the tuition covered?

@mom2jl, I really need to start remembering where I read things. I thought I read somewhere (here on CC) that you are invited to the reception and then invited to apply for Regents. I guess we will find out. I think S and I will go to Costa Mesa.

Regarding Regents and Alumni, Regents is sent to the top 1.5% of applicants. Alumni, according to a thread on CC (that I can find if you want me to) is sent to 4,000 applicants, most, if not all of which were Regents invitees. That is only 3% of applicants. UCLA is accepting almost 17,000 people this year. That leaves 13,000 non Regents, non Alumni scholarship applicants.

Best of luck to everyone still waiting especially all you California people with your crazy system!
