Thanks for all congrats! We were really excited and it will be very hard to turn down the offer. But we wanted to see the all the options.
@fretfulmother We received a regular UPS mail. The letter indicates that there will be another e-mail scheduling a visit to the school for the scholarship recipients early March. Each scholarship seems to have a different notification dates.
Good luck to all dealing with UC admissions, I am keeping my fingers crossed for you. I went through that rigamarole two years ago with my 2014 student (and am a grad myself); 2016 kid did not apply but will likely attend a Cal state. Hard to imagine SLO engineering could be considered a safety for anyone as there are many stories of kids getting into UCB and not there.
@skates76- LOL about the lack of mathlete genes! We have three kids that were/are knowledge bowl captains-very competitive state-level teams. I also tell people if you want to feel stupid, go and watch a knowledge bowl meet. It works for me, every time!
Congratulations and commiserations to everyone. What an exciting time of year and what a great group! I promise I have read every post, but who else nearly gets an anxiety attack when logging on these days to 100+ posts on a regular basis? Even so, lets keep the good news coming!
And whatās all of this talk about being on hold until mid-March? What about likely letters guys?
@GoodGrief16 - I think we will be juggling 10-12 as well. Not looking forward to doing that again.
@kittymom1102 - Wow! Congratulations. That is amazing!!!
Too hard to keep track of everyoneās news on my phone - but sending out Valentineās Day greetings on this unbelievably cold Sunday morning. Congrats to all on the fantastic news, and condolences to those still waiting to hear from the UCs re: the randomness of their admissions process. We are still waiting here for the NMF letter, not that it will make a difference.
@critter I enjoy attending Knowledge Bowl competitions as wellā¦even though it reinforces how much I do not know (especially the complicated math questionsā¦with only 15 seconds to solve and answer!). Any idea how many states have Knowledge Bowl?
@4kids2graduate Our state has academic team and science team competitions , but I donāt believe that they are part of the Knowledge Bowl system. And yes, I do feel quite inadequate when the only questions I know the answers to are TV trivia or commercials. Although my sonās knowledge of Dos Equis " most interesting man in America" came in handy to win a round and move up to the next level.
We live in the pacific northwest - Knowledge Bowl is in ID and WA. I grew up in Florida and my brother competed in a similar program in a Florida high school, I think it was called High Q?
We have Academic Team rather than Knowledge Bowl as well. S is the A team captain (and nicknamed Hannibal by his friend, who is definitely Murdoch) this year. He likes asking me the questions after the matches-- glad to know Iām not the only parent giving their DC a blank look (or, in our case, āthatās math, isnāt it?ā)-- though I remember a surprising amount of junior high French and rock the lit category. S is the āmath guyā, which he clearly doesnāt get from me.
@critter Iām not expecting any likely letters. It would be awfully nice, but none have been forthcoming thus far. S is very much not an athlete, and his schools donāt recruit bassoonists, apparently. So we wait, some days more patiently than others. Last night was a dance at the local ethnic group society attended by S and his girlfriend and most of their friends, and tonight heās taking her out for Valentineās Day. I imagine college will be the furthest thing from his mind.
S had had Cal Poly SLO on his list for a long time-- until just about the last minute, when he was feeling pressure to cut his list and arbitrarily cut everything on the west coast. The other two California schools were big reaches, and he refused to look at the UCs because we assumed financial aid was unlikely for OOS kids. D wants to live in California, preferably Monterey, but would prefer that it somehow move to her rather than vice versa. Donāt see that happening, somehow!
Well, we finally got the dreaded IDOC email. But, things are going to have to wait (learned 1 source is not planning on sending 1099 until 3/21- what???) Iāll have to do some calling on Tuesday.
Happy to say Iām not going to worry about it because we are packing up for a visit. The two honors programs that DS was accepted to are having an open house Monday. He has also arranged to meet with a professor to discuss research. Keeping fingers crossed it is a great visit & helps finalize DSās decision. (Would be great to get some merit $ too!)
Besides it is Valentineās Day. Stay warm up north & happy day to all :x
IDOC still doesnāt show everything I uploaded as complete.
SLAC still havenāt released admissions decisions. I think we will not know about 5 decisions until the 1st week in April. I am NOT good at waiting. Perhaps God is trying to teach me patience. I keep hoping āGood things come to those who waitā. D16 is keeping busy & trying hard not to think about.
S signed up for the UCSB reception in Costa Mesa. So now we wait for more news
@readingclaygirl, where I live in California it gets below freezing at night in the winter. One time I went to the store and bought groceries and a bag of ice because we were having relatives from a warmer area of California over for Christmas. I brought the groceries into the house and then got distracted and forgot the ice in the car. The next morning I remembered and when I told my relatives I had forgotten it they laughed at how my car was going to be soaked due to the ice melting. I told them it should be okay, and sure enough, when I went to the car the ice was still frozen as if I had just purchased it.
That being said, -11 is just too cold. Do people even go outside in that weather?
