Parents of the HS Class of 2016 (Part 1)

It was 8 here early this morning when I drove D to the airport for her first solo school visit – where she will be greeted by temps in the 80s!!!

I was so jealous.

@readingclaygirl what is this “rain” you speak of? I think we had that in California once, but it was along time ago.

Busy mostly happy weekend news it seems!

CONGRATS! to all on the California school acceptances or acceptances to be announced at upcoming receptions. Congrats @lifegarding @Momjjl

@congrats on great scholarship @DAPIStained and scholarship inteview invite @Skates76
@Justathought1 congrats on the decision made

hope I haven’t left anyone out.

@DAPIStained - I didn’t realize Michigan has full tuition scholarships. How may do they give out?

@MidwestMomTo2 Hope she has a safe flight and a great (warm) trip!

Help - I’m trying to do the IDOC and they say that .pdfs generated by the tax software are “preferred” but they also say they want signed returns, and the .pdfs from the software aren’t signed…what to do?

@texaspg - ha ha thank you but no, no recent good news…in fact, my son did not get an invitation to the big scholarship (Banneker Key) at UMD, nor did he get any offers from UMich! He did get the Yale likely, for which we are all incredibly grateful and still pinching ourselves.

I heard Harvard might be issuing likelies in a couple of weeks.

It was 6 degrees earlier when I woke up, now it is a balmy 9 and might break double digits soon - heat wave!!

@DAPIStained Congratulations, that sounds like an amazing opportunity (-:

@fretfulmother We printed, signed and scanned them. I really wouldn’t want to submit PDFs that are editable.

Likelies work different from scholarships.

@texaspg - thank you! Ok we’ll do that then. How are likelies different from scholarships? I was figuring it was a matter of the publics in our case, not getting all the info that the privates got (fewer essays, fewer recs, etc.) - but are there other differences going on?

Have any OOS applicants on this thread received the UCSB reception invitation?

Currently 75 with a high of 81. Boring. Which is the case of weather, is just fine with me.

D works for a local gourmet chocolate company so all hands on deck for Valentine’s weekend. She is aggressively NOT romantic which make her job as a chocolate providing cupid all the more humorous.

Usually some groups outside of admissions is deciding on who to give scholarships to or invite for interviews if they are not automatic in terms of statistics. If you have additional essays to submit and other qualifiers (service, external recs etc), then it complicates the matters further.

Likelies on the other hand are being determined by the same people who make decisions on your app. They have already decided to admit you and so sending out a likely is just a means of communication. You are just hearing your decision ahead of the deadline. It is also likely that if you have gotten into one school already, their peer schools feel more than likely that you should be admitted when they review the same app/information.

From what I have seen in the past, people tend to get likelies from HYP or Columbia/Penn/Dartmouth/Cornell. I think they figure out who is likely to show up?

67 right now with an expected high of 87. So much for El Niño!

Hi everyone! I’m not a parent, but my parents and I are having trouble figuring out the IDOC and so I thought I would ask for help on this thread.

One of the schools I am applying to requires our 2015 tax returns by tomorrow, but my dad still hasn’t received any of the information from his employer. If we’ve submitted our 2014 returns already and turn in the 2015 returns when they arrive, do you think we’ll receive the aid package along with the acceptance letter or will we have to wait?

Awesome, @3scoutsmom! Congrats to your D!

@palm715 that is quite hilarious! I’m not romantic either.

@QuirkyClarkie Have you looked at the dates on IDOC vs what the school is saying? I have noticed the school is asking for things earlier.

Unfortunately it is a question which only the school can answer. I have seen that some schools say please file 2014 if you can’t do 2015 but realistically, a school can make final offer only with 2015 numbers. So it is best to try to get them done ASAP. It would be rare that one can’t figure out their W-2 or 1099 income whether they are issued one of those forms or not and I started doing taxes long before we were issued the employer form. What I did not know were other numbers like dividends or capital gains which some other instittutions had to send. I had to figure them out myself using the online accounts and making approximations.

@QuirkyClarkie call the school tomorrow and tell them. They have something to work with already so you should be fine.

Does anyone else’s IDOC not show a due date for Cornell? Some people said it was due Monday.

@Mysonsdad My S’s IDOC doesn’t have a date for Cornell. However, in his Cornell’s financial aid account, it says that the deadline is indeed 2/15. We’re going with Cornell’s website.
