Parents of the HS Class of 2016 (Part 1)

We are back from our “kidnapping” night away-was very relaxing and fun. It just got real here too-D signed up for early registration weekend in April, and H put down the housing deposit-D reports to college on August 8! I’ll be going to the registration weekend as there is a parent component (FA, housing, business office appointments, etc.) D will get to meet with her advisor, choose classes, take placement tests, meeting current students in her major, etc. We’ll go a few days early and look around the city. I am deep into researching trip costs.

Welcome back @AsleepAtTheWheel and congrats to @SouthFloridaMom9 !

I forgot to add-H is helping one of D’s friends edit her application essay for a last-minute added on college. Her essay is…terrible. Supposedly her GC told her she is law school material, and if so, the GC should be fired. The work isn’t even good middle school writing. She’s one of the sweetest kids you’ll ever meet, but is getting TERRIBLE advice at school. I’m hoping that another school she applied to which does not take essays will admit her and put her in remedial classes. Or maybe she needs to stay here and do CC. I feel so bad for her.

@LKnomad Thank you for enlightening me. My husband has always teased me because he thought the degree sounded unconventional. I never took the time to research other schools.

Congratulations on that huge step! @sseamom

@sseamom that’s crazy real. So happy for both of you

@mstomper – Still in the catch-up mode (more of this to come, I’m sure) – Congrats on your son landing at Temple. He’s certainly one of those kids who doesn’t fall neatly into one of the standard applicant boxes, and it’s great that he’s landed at a good school in a good city and will get to pursue his passion. It’s also a fresh start, and I guess as long as they don’t make him turn in any English papers (?I’m remembering correctly) he should be in good shape.

As an aside, S14 (also of high standardized tests scores and, shall we say, an ‘uneven’ transcript) is taking a film course this semester (that he loves). When I asked him about the papers he’ll need to write he said, “Dad, it will be so much easier than those papers I had to write last semester. For this class I’ll be writing papers about films that I’ve seen. Last semester I was writing papers about books I hadn’t read”.

That is why we don’t have a handgun in the house.

P.S. to @readingclaygirl – This thread wouldn’t be the same without you. Thanks for keeping us old folks company.

@SouthFloridaMom9 and @mstomper, congratulations…I think I heard @SouthFloridaMom9 S screaming out here in So Cal…
@sseamom sounds like a fun night!! Mysonsmom is out of town with her elderly mom so I was home alone for Valentines Day. Just when I thought @mstomper was ahead of the game you leap frogged her. Congratulations

Thanks, @AsleepAtTheWheel. He’s actually done ok in English this year. He realizes that he may not like college film classes once he gets into it, but I think he’ll enjoy it. If he doesn’t, his math apitude is off the charts and he does like it. He’s taking a film class with his younger brother this semester; it’s the first time they’ve had a class together.

Awww thanks everyone. <3

Yes, @petrichor11 , but it’s not a sure thing. :confused:

Took a quick peek at the acceptances list https://■■■■■■■/class2020 and not only have we gone to 8 pages now we have 18 decisions (I’ve started to keep the tally at the top). Exciting!

You made me smile @AsleepAtTheWheel

I have had yet another conversation with DS about college costs with a warning that his chosen colleges may surprize us with higher amounts than anticipated. The NPC cannot be used well by a family that has a business so, while I think we are on the right track, we may not be. He will have 2 safeties that will be affordable but he really wants the SLACs. He also refused to look beyond the west coast because he wanted to be near home so we are stuck waiting for possible bad news. Today I told him about @mysonsdad and his surprise higher amount as well as other stories I have heard on CC. His answer, “That is what loans are for.” I know that if we don’t co-sign loans, his grandmother will, so he has the potential to make some ugly choices. For such a smart kid…

Sigh.

i got an MBA from University of Houston. they have had a BBA offering for several decades - very popular national level entrepreneur program.

@LKnomad, as I read your post S is going through the NPC’s and after NEU he is realizing the costs. Personally, when we first started this he looked at UCLA as a last resort, he is now starting to look at it as a good idea, especially if he gets Regents or Alumni scholarships.

I’m sorry for the financial struggle @LKnomad hopefully he comes around. I guess at 17 it can be hard to grasp just how much money it is. I hope it all works out. Hugs

@SouthFloridaMom9 I live in the pacific northwest now…but I am a gator along with my two siblings, and my niece just finished veterinary school there.

I love to hear stories of kids getting accepted to UF…it makes me sentimental. Of course, if I was applying today…they would never let me in!

I was a lifeguard for a couple of years at the on-campus outdoor pools at UF…best campus job ever!!! For those of you in the northern climates…the outdoor pools there closed from Nov.-Mar. and were open the rest of the year! There are definitely perks to attending school in the warmer parts of the country!

Wow, that’s neat @4kids2graduate! I bet it does make you nostalgic. But the PNW is amazing too.

@SouthFloridaMom9 Funny…S16 had no interest in UF so did not apply - but could very well end up in Florida or Alabama since a couple schools in those southeastern states are fairly high on his list! It would make for some convenient trips…I could visit him and 3 generations of my family who ALL still live in florida!

@AsleepAtTheWheel:

“That is why we don’t have a handgun in the house”…LOL!

Have to love those “kids” in adult bodies that still haven’t figured out some of the things they need to prioritize! We had no weapons in our house while kids were growing up (still don’t) or I might have had LESS than 4 kids to graduate!

@4kids2graduate @SouthFloridaMom9

We lived in the FL panhandle for 4 years and all we heard from the HS kids there was “Roll Tide.”

It was odd to me because growing up in the Chicago suburbs, most of my classmates looked only at UIUC for state flagship schools. I would have thought all FL kids wanted to be a Gator or Seminole.

No “war eagle” for Auburn? Enjoyed our tours of all those Alabama schools with their crazy loyal fans! S16 is not thrilled with the football frenzy…so that did not sway him!

This is why we missed you so much
