@Mysonsdad Please teach me how to copy in the grey box? I haven’t mastered that yet!

just don’t leave a space between the brackets and q in quote at the beginning and the e at the end of quote and ]
It works but I will never remember that many steps.
@AsleepAtTheWheel welcome back. Good luck to your son with his application to the Business BA program.
@SouthFloridaMom9 Congrats!
@sseamom Congrats on your D’s decision!
@mstomper Congrats to your S! Not sure where you are from, but if you have any questions re Philly, feel free to PM me.
Congrats to @SouthFloridaMom9 on the screams of joy and to @mstomper and @sseamom for paying out the first college dollars!
Thanks for asking, because I’ve wondered myself! And as you all know, I’m halfway to Senior. High time to learn. ![]()
@sseamom My D16 updated me today about one of her former classmates from her old school (the school D16 got the h*ll out of). He’s a senior too, who has been academically shortchanged by that school, it seems. He does have various learning challenges and his stated plans for college and career seem completely unrealistic and impossible to attain. Just the misinformation and lousy guidance the school adviser is giving him breaks my heart. Instead of an excellent and satisfying plan, he’s being set up for deep tragedy, and I’m not using the word lightly. It gets me so angry. And so sad.
We have had the very detailed money talk this weekend as well @LKnomad. I have walked him through the spreadsheet that I built to estimate costs and talked about how accurate that may or may not be, explained the money we have saved and how much more we can probably add over the next 4 years, made suggestions as to what he should be doing now to add to those funds (scholarships, summer job, co-op, etc.), and he seemed to take it all in. Then we shifted gears and talked about how the schools on his short list are different from each other (academic calendar, curriculum, AP credit policy, location, placement assistance, size, etc. I assured him that all of them will give him the degree he needs to pursue his career goals but now he needs to consider all of this to make a final choice. He said it was a helpful discussion. I feel I have done what I can to lay the facts before him and now he has to decide which is the best overall “package”. I am REALLY hoping that he can decide before Mid-April. :-SS
After a lot of cajoling, nagging and finally grounding for an unspecified unrelated event, I finally have two lists of scholarships-applied-to stuck to my refrigerator door. S was apparently really motivated to keep me happy yesterday-- he’s the one who is grounded-- because his list has twelve new scholarships on it.
No guns in this household, either, for similar reasons to @AsleepAtTheWheel .
Scholarship apps are in full swing for the twins in this house too @petrichor11
We are leaving tonight for a couple accepted students day. First one is tomorrow (Wednesday), then we drive to the next school on Thursday. On Friday she has a day of sitting in classes and meetings followed by an accepted students day on Saturday. This is the last time we will be able to visit any schools so I am hoping that this makes the decision clear.
After this trip, we will be at the point where no more information is expected to come in. Now its just a matter of picking one. Each school has pluses and minuses and its hard to weight which factors are really more important. Does she go with the least expensive which is the riskiest in terms of potential negatives? Does she go to the highest ranked full pay school? That one had fallen of her list early but has come back with a vengeance as she has joined the facebook group and is making lots of new friends. Or will it be one of the two in the middle? These two middle schools are the ones we are visiting on this trip. I am hoping that we will join the ranks of those who have a decision by this time next week.
Good luck @me29034. I hope the trip is fun and helpful in the decision making process.
Best of luck @me29034
Good luck @me29034. Hoping this visit brings forth a clear winner for you all!
Good luck @me29034 . D is happily researching dorm decorating and organizing. The change in mood around here is wonderful.
@dyiu13, the school D’s friend goes to is one of the city’s best…IF you are a white, gifted student. However, it also houses local minority and lower-income students in general classes, whose parents have been complaining for decades that their kids are not being well served. D’s friend is the perfect example. It breaks my heart.
Enjoy your trip @me29034 !
Sent an update off to the GC with details of why DS may take her up on an earlier offer to assist him. I wanted her to understand we are completely supporting him in approaching her so there are no delays or misunderstanding. We are running out of time for any such nonsense.
Here’s hoping that he actually goes to talk to her sooner rather than later. Once he disappears into his spring sport, finding time and energy to devote to this process will be VERY difficult. :!! [-O<
@me29034 Good luck with school visit and decision.
DD was invited to scholarship recruitment and travel will be free for her. We asked her whether she wants to go to the the school with us and she said no. So she will visit Ann Arbor alone. This travel will be her first air travel without me or her mom. It was a sentiment feeling when I realized she’s almost ready to be independent.
Her last college interview was done last Wednesday. Mostly good interviews except a couple of bad interviews. The best interview she had was an interview from a lottery schools. Her interviewer wanted to hug her when the interview was done. She asked DD to contact her if DD is waitlisted. She promised DD to make a phone call to admission office to advocate DD one more time. I don’t think it won’t make any difference, but it is still nice to see DD has good impression regarding the school.
@me29034 wishing you fruitful and safe travels.
On the topic of money and college admission thought I would share the “fabulous” offer made by Visa to my soon to be collge daughter. The letter notes that it is a “special” offer to learn how to use a credit card wisely. How “special” you may ask?? Well so special that the APR is 0% for the first year and 30.15% after that. WOW. The offer came addressed to her. I can’t even believe it is legal to make that sort of offer to a kid.
Hello All! I am fairly new to CC and just found this thread about a month ago. It has been fun to check in from time to time, to see what parents, and some students, are talking about. What a wonderful community you are!
This is my first time posting on this thread, to add some more good news. My S16 was accepted EDII to Grinnell College, his #1 pick. We were a little nervous about applying ED, but all the info we found on the school indicated they were more than fair with their fin aid packages, and all was worked out. He also finally received notice that he is a NM Finalist, so every little bit of extra scholarship $ will help! It feels really good to know that S16 is heading to a school that is a great fit for him, and are excited for his next 4 years. He already filled out his roommate survey, so he’s on his way!
Now we are on to helping our Class of 2017 son. (He is “so happy” to have all the focus on him now!) Hope to find a group as nice as this, with whom to communicate. I certainly have learned a lot from reading various threads and posts of the many wonderful parents and students on CC, and feel better prepared for S17!
@CAMidwestMom - Happy to read that your student has so many great schools to choose from! It will be exciting to hear where he finally chooses to attend. As I noted in a post on the SCC thread, I went to LMU and really liked the Jesuit school experience. Of course, that was a LONG time ago, when we were all from large Catholic baby-boomer families of 5-6 siblings or more. We had shared rooms all our lives. It is interested to see how kids, who these days have often never had to share a room until college. cope with living with a complete stranger. My sons shared a room, in bunk beds until about 4 years ago. So they have some experience. We will see how it all works out…
@AsleepAtTheWheel - You are hilarious, and it’s great to see you back in the thread.
Congratulations to all who have committed to their schools! And good luck (fingers and toes crossed) for all who are still waiting on the rest of their admissions decisions!
@DAPIStained my D just came back from a solo trip. Your D will do great!
