@Mom2jl I hope your D’s decision comes soon!
@Mom2jl Hoping for a prompt decision . I know waiting is extremely hard.
Thanks to those who provided the links
@Baylorpoly re: #15438. I am going to have to disagree with you on the rolling admissions schools being much less in demand, Pitt (#66 US News) and Purdue (#61 US News), Penn State (#47 US News) are rolling and I would say are very much in demand and I will politely disagree that higher rank = higher demand.
@mysonsdad, I hope the ring will be found. Was the package insured?
If you paid with credit card you should have some consumer protection.
How many applications constitutes a school high in demand and why does it matter?
Welcome, @beech653. What a story! Sounds like you have a local alumni group that interviewed your child and that you may even know the people who run it. If so, I think I would contact the liaison who coordinates interviews, give a short account of the story, and ask the liaison to advocate for your child, and assure liaison that your child would attend X if admitted. That is, unless you are just done with the whole thing. Like @fretfulmother, I am surprised that MIT did not rescind last year’s student’s admission–did they not know about the ED app? And like @AsleepAtTheWheel and others, I would have been a little miffed (that is my euphemism for “ripping the GC a new one.”)
Thanks for the encouraging Oberlin story, @morningside95.
All this “flying around the country to meet virtual friends” talk has me thinking that we should all invite ourselves to the California lunch, and thus I take back my request for them to wear swimsuits…since I don’t want to wear one myself!
Welcome @LionsMum and congrats to your D!
Smart travel planning, @CAMidwestMom. You will be glad when you are not sleeping on your S’s floor over parents’ weekend!
@fretfulmother, I am also heavy on the nostalgia these days; so far I have resisted running up to young mothers in the grocery store and yelling, “These are the best days of your life! Treasure them!”
I like that our list is the
Very apt, @petrichor11, @CAMidwestMom, and @bookmom7, especially as we begin cruising on the SS Indecision in April after acceptances and before decisions!
Oh, @Mysonsdad, the ring thing must work out! And if it doesn’t, you will have all the members of our list scouring the country for your lost package.
@Mom2jl, hugs and hopes.
I love that we all have our own top choices. And that sometimes our top choices are not conventional nor are they others’ top choices. Hugs to all who are waiting.
I guess if my daughter goes go MIT of CalTech, she will be miserable. She considers those schools are some foreign school she never heard about it.
BTW, we are very close to 1000.
@4kids2graduate -regarding long distance relationships–I still have my (our) letters in a box from when my fiance (now husband) and I were separated for the year of our engagement while he was overseas! That was 30 years ago, and if we wanted to speak on the phone, I had to call the Operator each week to find out the cost per minute and set a timer, so we wouldn’t go over our ‘telephone’ budget!
@mom2jl Good luck w/ Cal Poly SLO! My understanding is that CPSLO admits by major, and the acceptances come out over a few weeks.
@Mysonsdad Best of luck!
Wow I left my computer and am trying to catch up.
@Eastgrad and anyone else who might find themselves in CA around April and wants to join let one of us know and we can give you what ever info we figure out. All are welcome to the SoCal meet and greet!!!
@mom2jl The Calpoly SLO situation is really odd. As a former high ed admin, I can tell you that it is easy to have the IT guys simply set up a time to send everything out at once, as almost all other schools are doing. Perhaps they are making these decision as they go? It is odd. I read last year that UCI did something similar for the decisions (with the exception of the CHP.) At least she now has some acceptances to feel proud of no matter what happens.
I spent 3 hours on the freeway during rush hour on a Friday - the 405 for the locals, so that I could take that stupid IDOC business/farm supplement to my accountant and have her go through it with me). My kid better appreciate me AND he better get decent financial aid after all the work I had to put in.
Ah, @Baylorpoly I see my list friends have named several schools for you while I was out being D’s taxi. I didn’t even need to look past our own WWU for an example. It actually does have a deadline of Jan. 31, but continues to accept applications long past that time. So I’d call that rolling admissions. It’s well-ranked in US News, Kiplingers, even for how many Peace Corps volunteers graduated from there. There are so many different ways to rank colleges that what matters to one person may not matter at all to the next one. It’s not the only large public that has rolling admissions, either. UW Bothell does, and it’s more highly ranked than the flagship in Money Magazine. You’d find publics in many other states that also offer rolling admissions.
Just wanted to mention that we’re a real supportive bunch here-we don’t usually lay out a challenge as if other posters don’t quite know what they’re talking about. In fact, I think many of us have learned a lot from each other!
Thanks!
Welcome to our new members! Serenity for the rest of us, wherever we may be in this whole crazy college search process.
Nothing really new to report here. More phone calls from schools but no decision has been made. I do finally have all tax info and will complete that this weekend. Not sure if I will use data retrieval tool or update FAFSA manually. Am I remembering correctly that there is a waiting period before data retrieval will work? Is there any advantage to using it other than not having to type in the numbers?
Had a whole long post laid out, but instead I’m going to just hand @sseamom the “speaks for me” card.
@Cheeringsection At one of the college info sessions (I can’t remember which one) I believe they said if you used the data retrieval tool, there was less chance that you’d be chosen for verification or an audit, but I’m sorry I can’t really give you the source .

some reasons why using DRT is a good idea. Although number 3 might only apply to FAFSA only schools. Since CSS profile schools might still require copies of tax returns.
I filled out FAFSA with numbers from tax return but also did the DRT. The second year is a bit more complicated with education credit and taxable scholarships for D. By using DRT I know these fields are filled in correctly. Also I feel better about the school knowing that these are numbers transferred directly from the IRS.
If there is no balance owed and you efile, the return should process quickly. I efiled Jan 25 and got our refund in a week. Waited for D to be home so we could do DRT together last weekend.
I heard the same thing.
Thanks for the DRT info. I just SO want to have another part of this process done, but I will wait (Im)patiently.
Welcome to all newbies. Congrats to all for acceptances and scholarships. Ice cream for the kids and your beverage of choice for us adults. Some scholarship apps are in - that US Presidential app is completely hanging over my D’s head. Ugh. But more apps to go. Had a temporary freak out when I looked at IDOCS and saw their deadline. The first school had a deadline of March 1st, which completely threw me as my taxes aren’t done yet. I ended up calling the school who told me it is only a priority deadline. But still. My D also told me she is perfectly fine wearing her dress from last yeaf (gorgeous and simple Greek-style silk chiffon gown) to this prom – she was going with a guy friend, and there were no promposals here (last year though, a different guy baked a huge pan of brownies and wrote prom? On it and brought it to her bio class and the whole class told her to say yes so that they could eat the brownies.). I’m feeling like I really want all of the waiting to be over – glad my D is super busy so that she doesn’t have to think about it too much.
