On the tax front, it’s officially bug Dad so FAFSA’s can be updated time. Because for my college you can’t do housing or get your email until you accept the financial aid package.
@Cheeringsection, regarding waiting period: when you transition from the FAFSA to the IRS site, the DRT asks whether you’ve submitted your taxes in the past three weeks (electronically) or six weeks (by mail). The closer you get to April 15th, the more these windows apply–or to state this more clearly, if you finish your taxes early, you are more likely to be able to use the DRT within a week or so.
I love your style, girl. Bug Dad Time (not Bug Mom Time)!
On a positive note, it is a leap year. One more day to get things submitted.
Thanks @EastGrad My mom said they have to get done today and he’s the one who always does them.
@Baylorpoly My S16 definitely feels that he is done applying, and he has enough colleges on his list…but once in awhile he starts to second guess himself (or he talks to a friend that applied to XXXX school and he starts to wonder if he should have applied there, etc).
About a week ago I just went down the common app list from A to Z just looking at the column for app deadlines. It will show ALL rolling admissions schools (there are a ton!) and also you will find a few here and there with later deadlines that have not passed yet.
I am hoping S doesn’t decide to do any additional apps…but it was nice for me to know there still were so many choices if he does change his mind
This is a more tedious way to find those schools still available to apply to, but it works!
When it asked me if we efiled in the last three weeks I said yes, but it let me try to link to IRS and they were ready to be imported.
@readingclaygirl That’s exactly how it is in our household. That’s Dad’s contribution to the college process.
Another milestone accomplished today. DS16 exercised his right to vote and voted for the first time in our state primary. He was so excited, just like Alex P. Keaton .
This week we officially received a telephone call or letter or both from every one of D16’s accepted schools asking if she has made a decision yet. Nope! Not going to lie it is oddly satisfying to make them wait for a change.
@carolinamom2boys that’s an exciting milestone! DD turns 18 in May, just in time to vote in our California primaries in June–she can’t wait!
My son will be too young to vote in the CA primaries. He is disappointed. He loves politics. He will be ready for the presidential vote, however.
@carolinamom2boys That is exciting! And I totally got the Family Ties reference! @labegg haha Yeah turn the tables on them. I’m sure D will make the right decision soon
good job @carolinamom2boys’ S!
DS got his voter’s registration card & is ready for Super Tuesday.
(I read somewhere recently that people who tend to take the time to vote in elections- primaries included- tend to have fewer health problems- so, there is more incentive!)
Scanned all my docs into IDOC. Think we are finally done with this part of the process. Ugh. Not pretty. I can’t figure out how I am supposed to spend 33% of my income on college? (I am not going to do this. D has to make some financially reasonable choices. She has good options. But that is somehow the expectation!)
in some states- if you are old enough to vote in the November election you are eligible to vote in the preceding primaries even if you are 17. Unfortunately- not in our state-- but thought I’d mention in case it benefits anyone else’s kids.
D is very frustrated that she can’t vote (she’ll be 17 next month).
So back to updating CSS, how do you do it? Just make changes on paper, then scan and upload to the school? I am so not the financial person!
My DD will be turning 17 soon so she is too young to vote. If she could, she would probably be a tiebreaker, since my DH and I somehow end up voting not only for different candidates, but for a different parties. Not that it makes any difference in California anyway.
On a scholarship applications front DD decided not to apply to a full ride scholarship to the very first school that accepted her during EA. I am a little sad since this was the only school that kept me sane after a bid EA deferral fiasco. The essay prompt is very different from what she had before and she can’t reuse any of her essays and she never really considered this this school and only applied based on my suggestion. But I guess it is time to let it go since she has better fit options now.
@Undercovermom1 I think we have the same D. Mine will turn 17 next month too.
D won’t be able to vote in the presidential election. She’s bummed about that. She’ll have barely turned 17 by then. But she’s following the race intently.
We didn’t wait to import from the IRS-we just filed both our return and FAFSA the same night (needed a strong libation after THAT), but we have very simple finances. We have not been selected for verification, thank goodness.
I’m definitely the college process person is this house. H just asks where and when he should send the checks. He thinks I might be a little TOO involved, but I beg to differ.
@petrichor11 - thank you
As for rolling admissions schools-one of them saved the bacon for one of D’s friends last fall. She’d been accepted to an engineering school in London and spent her summer working 2 jobs, having yard sales, anything she could to raise money to help pay for it, but her primary financing fell through-I’m not entirely sure what happened. So it was August and she was looking an an unintended gap year. She remembered a rolling admissions school where she’d thought of applying and called to see if they still had a spot open. They did, she was accepted, and her scholarships mostly all transferred. She is thriving there AND she gets to come home far more often. I can’t say if it’s ranked well enough, but it does have a designation for being super generous with FA.
Mine won’t be eighteen until after the primary, but they’ll be able to vote in the general election. I have no strong feelings about my party’s candidates (well, I do, lots of them-- including many negative-- and they’re about evenly divided between each candidate) so I’ve abdicated in favor of letting the two almost-eighteens use my vote for the candidate they both support.
Ugh- come Monday I am going to have to confront the financial aspect of this whole college application process- again.
DS received an email from 1 of his reach school explaining details of what all they needed, blah, blah, blah. The deadline is 3/15.
Online source says our last 1099 won’t be available until 3/22. ~X(
I will call them for guidance & see where it leads.
~X( is right @bookmom7 Hope it all works out
