@readingclaygirl, I’m 47, and I still remember like it was yesterday hearing of the death of a guy who was a senior when I was a freshman in HS - he was killed in a car crash the year after graduation. A student at a different HS in town was killed a couple years ago, and students at S’ school who knew him were all hit hard. Mortality’s a rough lesson to face, especially in people so young.
I’m glad your school sounds so supportive. Take care, and hey - hug your folks, too. This may hit them too, even if they don’t say so. Y’all are all pretty precious to all of us.
@readingclaygirl it sounds like you have a wonderful community to help all deal with such a sorrowful tragedy. It has been an incredibly tough year here as well, so our family feels your loss. Two unrelated suicides of an eighth grader in S21’s school, and later a high school freshman, and two high schoolers who passed due to long term illnesses.
I had been hesitant to write about this earlier, almost afraid of something else happening. Our kids have had to face a lot of adversity, sadness and their own mortality in many ways. D16 did not know well any of those lost far too soon, which is part of the randomness of it all, but on far more than one occasion I have lent a shoulder to cry on this year.
The kids and families here have found positive things to respond with as a school and community, especially raising awareness of mental illness and working hard to wipe away any stigma associated with seeking treatment and support for dealing with it.
Been away and haven’t had a chance to catch up on all the posts here. Congratulations to those with new acceptances/scholarship offers and hugs to those who didn’t hear what they wanted.
It’s been a mixed bag out here too for S. He’s been invited to an interview for a full tuition scholarship at one of his schools. But he did get rejected from a couple of other schools (expected, but it still stings!), didn’t make it past the first round at another school for a scholarship. More results expected next month. It’s going to be interesting to see how all this rolls out, how he decides. Senior year is chugging along and with everything going on, I am too scared to ask him how things are going Ignorance is bliss.
Welcome back @arisamp- I took a long ‘break’ as well. I think a lot of us have, as it’s been a long journey, for sure! Haha…remember the start of this when your S was trying to decide where to go to high school? The more things change, the more they stay the same. Good luck on the scholarship interview! Our S '16 just went through one of those, as have many others around here- it’s hard on the parents! Our guy, at least, seems to enjoy the interviews and actually, the entire process. But he is very tired, again, like all of the CC kids these days. It’s good that there is an end in sight. I’m not sure how much longer we can all drag on at this rate!
We’ve been in and out with all kinds of post-season activities, but I have tried to catch up with the reading. I’m sorry about the sad news, but there have been so many positives, it’s mind-boggling! Congratulations to everyone.
@readingclaygirl yes, we all should be counting ourselves as blessed to be worrying about something like college at all. There are much bigger worries for others in this world. Hugs for you and everyone whose life was touched by that student.
I also took a short break and when I came back there were 1000+ new posts! I’ll never get them all read, so congrats to all those who received new acceptances and hugs to those who were disappointed by rejections.
D says she will commit to her school this week, but she is having trouble with the finality of it all. She applied to 2 schools and was accepted at both. After the merit scholarships, the costs are roughly the same for us.
The theater season ends with a final community show tonight, the show choir’s annual shows are a month away. After 3 months off from her sport, she has missed it and is looking forward to getting back into it.
@GoodGrief16, I think at 300 posts you become a straight up “member.”
@arisamp, I happened to look back at page one of this thread the other day and saw that you started it and your first post. I was wondering what happened to you. Welcome back to your home.
Congrats, @mysondad! I have 93 posts to go (well, 92 now) so I guess I’d better start working on more frequent, shorter posts rather than the occasional catchup post!
@SouthFloridaMom9 kudos to you for such an achievement in less than a year on CC!
(my S is both impressed and horrified at how many posts I have here)
We are back from our trip to the two accepted students days and have a decision on which school she will go to. Hurray! We aren’t saying which one yet publicly but it is done for all practical purposes. We will be putting the deposit down on her first choice and she will tell 4 schools “no” this week. We intend to keep one other school active until May 1 just in case something goes massively wrong with her first choice.
I am so far behind that I haven’t had time to read everything but I wanted to add condolences to @readingclaygirl on the death of her schoolmate.
I did read the posts on moving after kids go to college. Its interesting because we are considering that. We live in a very expensive area which we chose mainly because of the school system. We figured that once the kids are out of high school that we could relocate but I never thought that they would look at it as reflecting on them.
I also noticed that people are shopping for dorm stuff already. I will probably start about a month before she goes to school. I can’t imagine where I would put stuff if I bought it now.
Which gets to my next observation. People have two master suites in their house? Wow! We don’t have one. We live in a 1700 sq ft raised ranch which was built 50 years ago, long before the concept of master suite existed. Yeah and we don’t qualify for any financial aid. We are not living like kings. You could probably buy a house in our town with two master suites but it would definitely cost over one million.
Congratulations @me29034. That must be a great feeling! I am excited for son to make his decision and be done.
Missed the posts about moving after kids leave but we are planning to do the same thing. I want to move a little further north in Florida. Our city council has gone construction crazy here in east Boca and it gets on my nerves. It’s too expensive anyway.
Awww so nice to “meet” you @madredos! Gosh are we sick of Boca or what. This season has just about done me in. My son and I went out to eat about 5 pm a weekend or two ago and the restaurant was already on a wait! I can’t take it anymore!!! And the traffic is the worst I ever remember it in 14+ years (almost 15).
If we wanted to live in Fort Lauderdale we would have bought there, right?
West Boca is so nice. We have done homeschool activities out that way.
