Parents of the HS Class of 2016 (Part 1)

Congratulations @Mysonsdad !

@skates76 hope the DW has a speedy recovery!

It’s great to hear that it was mostly good news yesterday! Good luck for those who are seeking decisions today!

Re: graduation: Ours is at a smallish performing arts center about twenty minutes from the school. Free parking and convenient, but restricted number of tickets per student. (There are usually some left over and kids can enter a lottery for those. One of the few moments when having multiples is an advantage!)

We have several people coming from out of town so we’re having the open house/party the same day as graduation. I’m leaving a couple of hours between the two so people can go back to their hotels and change, get comfortable, while we (which mostly means I) head home and start frantically warming food, making sure there’s enough ice, and all the other party-related angst.

When the older ones graduated several of their friends were also having parties, no matter how carefully we tried to coordinate. So with the open house plan, the kids have been told at least one of them has to be here at all times, and both have to be between the hours of __ and ___. After that, they’re free to roam, but if they’re not here for the designated time, any graduation presents they get are liable to be claimed by their twin!

So, though DS (and parents) are leaning toward Princeton, I have to admit that when he signed up for the visit weekend to MIT, and was able to put in that his arrival time was flexible because he is WALKING there, I realized that there could be certain conveniences. :wink:

Congrats to those with good news, particularly @mysonsdad with the BC news from the concert! I went to BC for Ed school and it was awesome.

@EastGrad - thank you for the summaries as always!!

I hadn’t thought at all about graduation parties. Our graduation is the first week of June, and seniors stop attending classes before the rest of the students (and also don’t have snow days).

Which reminds me - WTH about this new storm this weekend? On the radio they said snarkily, ā€œif you’ve put away your snow shovels, you have to get them out againā€¦ā€ and I said, ā€œYES that’s exactly what I did and also I hate youā€

@labegg We are going to Iceland at the end of June! We bought the tickets a few months ago. I think the prices have definitely gone up.

Hey everyone! Just woke up and received AMAZING NEWS! I just got the notification that I received the full-tuition Trustees’ Scholarship at USC!!!

So many tough choices! AHHHH

Congratulations @frenchtoastlover you are on a roll! You have a lot of options! I’m sure your family is so proud of you.

Congratulations to everyone that has posted good news and condolences to those that have had not so good news. There have been too many posts to be able to sort it all out. If I tried it would take up my entire day off lol. I have tried to hit the like button though, I apologize if I missed any.

D16 is at her last robotics competition through tomorrow. She has made her count down shirt and has less than 30 days to go. Last day of school for seniors is May 4 and graduation is May 11th. Her last youth orchestra concert is May 17. She’s is going on a youth group camping trip for spring break right after Easter. Spring break starts the 24th so at least I will see her for a couple of days. I’m still waiting to hear from her if we attend her admitted student days in a few weeks. She is afraid to miss school days and it falls on a Wed-Friday. The 16th is then her prom so she would be pretty tried with all the scrambling around. We know for sure that is where she is attending but I think it would be a good opportunity to meet people since she is the only one from her school that applied.

Time is moving too fast for me.

@frenchtoastlover Tough choices as in whether to add cinnamon to your french toast, what flavor of syrup, butter or no butter. Man I’m suddenly getting hungry

Hahaha, that’s a unique twist to the tough choice dilemma @GraceDad! I love it!! My personal preferences would be cinnamon, a very light drizzling of good quality regular maple syrup, and of course, butter.

Speechless @frenchtoastlover! Wonderful!

Congrats @Mysonsdad + you got to see The Boss too!

@eastgrad- I find myself very much looking forward to your recaps- amazing stuff ^:)^

Incredible news @frenchtoastlover!

@EastGrad Thank you!!!

Thanks for all the love, everyone.

Yes, especially as the wooers turn into the wooed. Colleges will turn up the heat in order to increase their yields. This is always a fun time for kids–after working so hard, the tables are turned! (And @critter, quote away!)

Oh dear, @Skates76, I hope DW made it home and is resting comfortably.

@fretfulmother, giving up any of your choices will be hard. Still, walking distance…

@RyanG1207 and @labegg, your trips sound amazing!!

Congrats on Brandeis, @petrichor11! Congrats on the USC scholarship, @frenchtoastlover! WOW! The world is your oyster.

So many incredible offers and scholarships: mega congratulations! And heartfelt wishes for those waiting for the good news. Less than 2 weeks left for the bench sitters.

@EastGrad thank you for your amazing summarizing skills.

Spring break starts at the end of next week for S. Two weeks off, and then back to school for only 2 weeks of classes before IB exams and graduation. All of a sudden, it’s moving way too fast. Last year we were looking at colleges during the spring break… S only visits. Due to distance, time and cost, DS will be deciding without any revisits.

Congrats @petrichor11 on Brandeis!

@fretfulmother - we heard the same thing from the weatherpeople here in PA. It’s supposed to be nasty on Sunday, but then 60 degrees on Wednesday. That is the beauty of these late winter storms at least.

@2filles - but I don’t wanna shovel. :wink:

No one here should need to shovel. We all have teenagers. In my house they do the shoveling.

@EastGrad Most recent update from Florida, DW no longer actively thinking she will die with her head in the toilet, but still nauseous. Flight home is at 7:45 today so I told them to at least pay for an extra day at the hotel so Mom can rest until the flight, or use the room to stay overnight if needed. I have laid out about ten different contingency scenarios for them depending on circumstances since it is a flight home, then a two hour drive from the airport to home since they did not flight our of our local, smaller airport. D16 can’t drive them home because she still only has a junior license that is verboten after 11:oo pm on our roads. I am in full McGuyver mode now, lol.

@carolinamom2boys In the midst of the gastrointestinal crisis texts, D16 apparently got news from home that the boy at school that she has liked all year (dark, brooding, litereary sort) is now dating one of her best friends. On the other hand, and you will appreciate this, before illness struck last night Mom and D16 were at one of those Escape Game places and a Freshman Chemical Engineering student from Clemson gave D16 his phone number after meeting her there, lol, I think she would do wonderfully to someday have a handsome Southern Gent for her bf (-;
