Parents of the HS Class of 2016 (Part 1)

Congratulations @AnxietyAttack77 That is an excellent news!

Congrats @AnxietyAttack77 ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! <:-P <:-P <:-P <:-P <:-P <:-P <:-P <:-P

Congrats @AnxietyAttack77 @allboyz @almondjoy1 @allboyz @momofzag @happymochi !

After wading through the thread about Bowdoin and sombreros, my advice to you is not carry one to that school if you attend it.

Interesting…well I woke up to find out that I got accepted to Middlebury, only for the Class of 2020.5 (February Admission). Guess I just squeezed in!

Congratulations to @anxietyAttack77 , @allboyz , @almondjoy1 , @momofzag , and @happymochi !

Thank you everyone. It has been quite the weekend here - acceptance to Grinnell, first rejection to Notre Dame and waitlisted to Davidson. Daughter is ok as she did get into WashU (one of her top schools). She was a little sore on the Notre Dame one though. @-)

Congratulations @Sophmore1 ! ! !

Grinell and WashU sound wonderful to me. I’m not really familiar with Grinell’s admissions to be honest, but WashU is really hard to get in. So many kids couldn’t get in and she did. Hopefully she can soon see how lucky she is

Thanks @kittymom1102 ! I keep telling her she will go where she is meant to.

@frenchtoastlover and others:

What, exactly, is the point of a mid-year start-date? To me, it seems extremely abusive to the student. They’re denied, I would guess, the critical main school-year orientation and experience that can really determine how well a student integrates and finda footing at the school. Does the school expect fall semester students to leave and open up spots for the mid-year starts? How does this for with a college’s admissions strategy? I just don’t understand. Thoughts?

Not sure @dyiu13, but in the Middlebury RD 2020 thread, a parent talked about the fall admits actually really looking forward to the Feb admits joining them, and that there’s no discrimination against Feb admits. In my acceptance letter, they said that this allows Middlebury to accept more applicants than they would have space for in Fall alone. It also notes that, ā€œTraditionally, these students have brought to the Middlebury College community outstanding academic and personal characteristics and leadership qualitiesā€, although I’m not sure if this is just packaging or actual praise.

Upon further research, it seems that this has been a tradition at Middlebury, to allow students admitted for February admission to take a gap semester and fill in spots that are left vacated by students who graduate midyear or those who are on study abroad.

Also from their FAQ: ā€œFebsā€ tend to be highly energetic leaders in their school communities, or students who have already sought unconventional and creative opportunities in their high school careers.

From browsing CC threads, it seems that students who are admitted for February tend to be very active on campus, both in HS and college, and are viewed as very capable and flexible, as students who can really adapt and gain from the gap semester and Feb. admit. Also, it’s been discussed that February admits are a much smaller cohort, and generally become very close with one another.

Emogi 8-} = duck lips being flapped by a finger, emitting a blubbering noise. Meaning ā€œwacky and silly and overwhelmedā€ (close as I could come to it). Someone asked!

I haven’t been posting much lately – I’m finally caught up on sleep after being away with S14 (details below if I get that far), moving the clocks ahead (at least the clock in my car is correct again), and a full week of work and catching up on paperwork at home.

I’m caught up on the thread. There have been some rejections that didn’t matter that much, but I’m sick over the rejections that hurt. Stating the obvious (my wife says that this is one of my many bad habits), who you are is far more important than where you go, but these rejections still suck. We’ve been there with S14, and FWIW he’s doing just fine (also, details below if I get that far).

There have also been some absolutely spectacular acceptances/decisions here. Wow. What an accomplished and amazing set of kids (and a bit lucky, too). I can’t call out all of them, but there were just a few I had to mention:
@allboyz – I first read your notes on the Athletic Recruits thread. I know how much this means for your son and how hard he’s worked since the the fall to make it happen. This is wonderful.
@Mysonsdad – You and your son have to be ā€˜fan favorites’ on this thread. All sorts of ups and downs (going back to those old AP tests). It must have been torture waiting so long for good news. I’m sure that the BC business program has fantastic connections for internships/jobs in the greater Boston area. What a great opportunity. And UC Regents? Again, wow.

@greenhk – I’m SO glad that your daughter made a wise decision. Even though you just recently joined the thread (and I’d not yet developed a long-standing emotional investment in your kid) I was really troubled over her choosing the wrong school for the wrong reason, and the awful position that it put you in. So I’m very glad it went in the right direction.

Again, enthusiastic joy and congrats to all the other wonderful acceptees. My ADHD precludes my listing them a la @EastGrad.

I’ll do the update on our scene in another note soon (again, that focus thing).

My S had a rejection yesterday, too, from UCSD. Not unexpected and took it in strde. Now getting down to decision-making with several good options. As others have said, glad he tried the reaches so he won’t have the ā€œwhat ifā€ pangs.

Congrats to all with recent good news, condolences to those with bad news. A perfect stats friend of ours has gotten rejections from all but our (very good) in-state flagship. Somehow his wonderfulness hasn’t shone through in his application. I wish we could have helped him find some matches to offset the lottery pain. I’m sure he’ll succeed no matter what but it is still tough to watch someone with both great talent and work ethic be disappointed.

@frenchtoastlover Thanks! It seems Middlebury has a culture that helps the mid-year admits. And those that arrive, I suspect, would be burning to attend. Middlebury has such high participation in study abroad, open spring spots seem likely. Mid-year admits would want to make sure the college took such overt and effective measures to ensure their integration into the campus world.

I’ve been reading more about it, and it seems like there are advantages and drawbacks to Feb. admit @dyiu13. Still not entirely sure what Feb admission really means. Is there anyone else here who is a Midd parent and may know? I’ll ask about it in the Midd forums.

Congrats to all! I’m back home now after an awesome night. I had fun and met some really nice people. I’m so excited for the fall. Plus FA packages are being mailed- it should come today.

It’s between Puget Sound or Seattle U. Both gave merit scholarships. Any insight on which is better for English/Creative Writing major?

Well, D16 woke up to BU admission and a pretty generous grant/financial aid combo. Along with Fordham/Lincoln Center, BU was among her top choices after a fall visits, but her inherent frugal nature (and desire to take out no loans) has here aiming toward less expensive options right now.

We’re still on the SS Indecision, but the ship seems to be circling a couple ports.

D has been admitted to seven but already declined two schools, and has a front runner. She awaits news from one school. All are good academic fits. Two will be far less expensive. Three (so far) will be more expensive but possibly do-able, with direct loans, using summer job money every year. (That extra money is mostly on her). There’s still a lot for her to consider, weighing better location, campus vibe, against better cost, comparing slightly better fit vs benefits of honors college vs. not…

It makes my head spin sometimes. It will be interesting to watch her final decision-making process …

@readingclaygirl I am glad you had a great visit and looking forward to the fall. That is exciting.

@AsleepAtTheWheel I am glad to see you back !

@MidwestMomTo2 Congratulations to your D on BU admissions! Good luck to her on a final decision.

My best friend did midyear start at Wesleyan an many years ago and it was fine.brave her time to work and save some money.
