Daughter had a tough rejection by Pomona yesterday. Great options on the table but that one was a stinger. She won’t talk about it. I gave her the words " love the ones that love you back ".
@crowlady - I am looking forward to hearing where you kiddo picks!
We are moving along with admissions…D currently has 3 affordable (sort of) choices and we are still waiting for more schools to make decisions. Too many rejections and one wait-list which she will stay on and make an effort to show interest (I think I posted earlier that it was her first choice).
ETA: she’s headed to an overnight at one of her choices. I hope she loves it.
Now an update.
Not much to report for S16, who’s known his fate since his ED acceptance in December (I’ve had to live the March excitement vicariously through everyone here). Amazingly, he’s still diligently doing his school work. A few weeks ago he had arguably his most important swim meet of the year, and he unfortunately fell short of his goals. He’s now in his last high school swim season. He’s 0.4 seconds off the school record in his best event with a 1:00.3. He’d love to crack that one-minute mark and get the record before he’s done, but he’ll be fine either way. Mrs. AsleepattheWheel and I are already getting wistful over him being gone in the fall. Ugh.
S14 had his college spring break the week before last. Instead of flying him cross-country back to California so he could lie on the couch for a week watching Family Guy re-runs while it rained outside, the two of us (S14 and me) both flew to Florida and did spring break together. Guys Gone Wild. Well, not really. We drove down to the Keys and scuba’d (although three of our scuba days were cancelled due to high winds), jet-ski’d, eco-toured, and ate lots of blackened fish. We then headed up to the mainland for a Florida Panthers ice hockey game and spent a morning cruising A1A in a scoot coupe (19 y.o. driving, with his 61 y.o. dad riding shotgun). We had a blast. When he was in high school the two of us spent 75% of the time yelling and screaming at each other and 25% of the time saying how much we loved each other. Now we regard every minute together as a gift. He’s not going to want to take vacations with Dad very much longer, and I feel blessed to have had the week with him.
Yesterday he got a dose of really good news. S14 was informed that he’d been accepted into the Emory undergraduate business program. That program was a major reason why he chose to go to Emory, and it would have been devastating if it had gone the other way. About 60% of the kids who apply get in, but it’s a pretty clever and accomplished cohort that’s applying. Put another way, it was by no means a given. As he put it, he had a bigger stake in this decision than any single college application decision two years ago. So we’re greatly relieved, and thrilled for him. He’s over the moon (hat tip to @happymochi for that expression).
And there you have it.
P.S. Second hat tip to @SouthFloridaMom9 for advice on what to do around FLL.
@AsleepAtTheWheel that sounds like a great spring break. Maybe at some point my children will allow such a thing!
@calimum Welcome to another newbie! I live in Seattle and both of those schools are among the top choices at D’s Hs every year. They’re both excellent. I can’t speak to your student’s major specifically, but if they are even considering teaching at some point, I would go with Seattle U. The education department has a fantastic reputation, and they get the kids out in the community-working with a low-income elementary school right down the road. They’ve “adopted” that school, if you will. Both sides seem extremely happy with the partnership. It’s a lovely campus, very close to all kinds of public transportation and downtown Seattle.
Cost ends up being an issue at both schools for kids at D’s HS, but many are lower income themselves. Finding a way to pay for it all is often a problem. D does have a good friend at PLU this year and she loves it. I’m not sure of her major though. She was a humanities kid in HS, so I’m guessing humanities major.
Why do I have Vanilla Ice and " Ice, Ice Baby" running though my head? @AsleepAtTheWheel . Maybe in 2 years my DS16 will be brave enough to ride around Chucktown in a convertible with 80s music blaring and his eternally young, hip and groovy mom jamming on the way to IOP. One can only hope. Congrats to your DS14 and hopefully Ds16 can shave off those secs to reach his goal…
DS’s chosen school offers the same orientation program to fall and mid-year admits. The program is mainly run by current students and they have to commit to both when they apply for the paid position.
Focus on the admits and wave goodbye to the rejections. That school is not worthy of your emotional investment. :-h
S admitted to Davidson this morning! Still waiting on six more decisions, but just really happy for him today…
Congrats on all acceptances.
@Highbury How exciting! My cousin goes there
@frenchtoastlover , @dyiu13 : The exchange up-thread is hilarious. I really appreciate your statements about the mid-year admits, frenchtoast.
Some of it I had assumed, but some of it sounds like great (ahem, just for you dyiu, spin to keep up the morale of a student group that otherwise might feel like also-rans. I think it is the best spin I have ever read, so I will copy and paste it into a growing file for the gap year student.
@frenchtoastlover : I also really appreciate your response to ‘how did you choose where to apply.’ Much of your response is like a mini framework, so I’ll keep that, too. Love the categorical Work Hard/Play Hard as a way to look at the schools.
@readingclaygirl : I’ve been looking for you! Glad to know you’re out there doing your thing. Hope this weekend is the best ever for you.
Congratulations to everyone, or, 'Yeah, What @EastGrad said!"
@mysonsdad: Go, Dad, Go!
Thank you! It was a blast and I can really see myself hanging out with some of the people come fall.
I don’t know from first hand experience but I do know an adult who was a Feb at Midd and thought it a great experience. My understanding is that about 100 students matriculate in Feb every year and they graduate 4 years later in feb as well. There is a special orientation program for them as well.
@carolinamom2boys – I don’t doubt for an instant that you’re young, hip, and groovy, and that you’ll stay that way for the conceivable future.
@Highbury – Congrats. That’s great. Davidson is a fantastic school. Doesn’t get the love in these threads that it deserves. And of course it has an alumnus who is the best jump shooter in the history of the NBA, which is ironic given that it’s a school most renown for its extraordinarily rigorous academics.
No worries @Waiting2exhale! Glad I could help
Ms. Nonchalant just walked out the door for work and said in passing, “Oh, I got into U of Rochester yesterday.” Since I’m working on being a cool cucumber mom (when in fact I’m really a crazed stalker mom), I say, “Yay, that’s great.” and continue doing the laundry. BUT, I get caught! As soon as I think she is in her car I start telling my H all about Rochester’s pluses and minuses, and she she comes back in to grab something she forgot. D’oh!
Congrats to your daughter @palm715
Congrats @palm715 .
Hi! Thank you @sseamom! She’s looking into being a writer/publisher.
