Parents of the HS Class of 2016 (Part 1)

@palm715 – Could there be a climate more different than Hawaii than Rochester? I don’t think so. It’s so cold there that the lawyers have their hands in their own pockets!

(no offense intended to the attorneys on the thread).

Wonderful news about your S14 @AsleepAtTheWheel!

Interesting discussion about spring admits. We have one of those and my S was thinking of using it as a backup if his grades go south and he’s rescinded from a school he chooses for Fall (yes, we were having a discussion about his less-than-stellar mid-quarter update). But I don’t think it will work that way – they won’t hold his place if he commits to another school.

Congrats @palm715 U of R is pretty popular up here especially for biomedical engineering. What does your D want to major in?

@readingclaygirl she is very interested in biomedical engineering, but believes mechanical engineering is more logical at the undergraduate level. :slight_smile:

I was also in the waitlisted at Notre Dame boat. From deferred to wait listed, how fun. More than anywhere else, I wanted to go to ND. I’m upset about this one. Maybe come may or June I’ll get that last minute call, but that certainly is unlikely.

One more RD decision left to go. Third one is the charm? Or does three make a pattern?

Serious congrats to all the good news. I’m happy for everyone. Too many to name.

@palm715

Out of curiosity, is there a reason she feels mechanical engineering is more logical that BME? I’m definitely pondering the possibility of going into BME myself, but mechanical is a whole nother animal and aren’t exactly related other than in the name.

Seems like perhaps a mechanical engineering degree would be less helpful that biomedical if medicine is the field of choice, no? Unless youre implying a postgraduate degree of some sort…

Just picking your brain. Curious as I’m figuring it out myself too.

Sorry to hear about the wait list @ProbDeferred

Sorry to hear the wait list news @ProbDeferred

Congratulations to your S14 @AsleepAtTheWheel

@palm715 - Congrats on U of R. My hubby is from Rochester. Abbots frozen custard is super yummy!

OH MY GOD. I just realized why I got the February admit from Middlebury…I was going over my Common App again, and realized I chose that I preferred February admission. Not sure what it meant at the time (thought that’s when they were releasing decisions for RD). I feel so stupid haha

@ProbDeferred My DH is a mechanical engineer working for biotech company. The way he explained to me is that ME is more challenging than BME and undergraduate degree in ME opens more doors. BME is between engineering and science and it is preferable to have strong engineering undergraduate degree.

@Ballerina016

Hmm, didn’t know that. Interesting. Thanks for the info. Chemical engineering was the other major of consideration, but that seems even further in the realm of science more so than engineering.

Thank you @AsleepAtTheWheel !

Also, your trip with your S14 sounds amazing…Glad the two of you could spend some time together. Also, congrats on his acceptance into the Business program at Emory…

@palm715 Congrats to your daughter.

Sorry to hear about your waitlist news @ProbDeferred . I hope your final decision is good news…

Sorry you’ve had some tough news lately, @ProbDeferred. My good friend’s daughter was on the waitlist 2 years ago, and was all set for Marquette or Fordham, I think, and got the call in May, that she was in! So, be sensible about making other plans, but if you really want to go, you might as well give it a shot! :slight_smile:

Happy to hear from those who are getting good news. Always appreciate your sharing! My S will be at Grinnell, @Sophmore1, but I can see that your D has several options to choose from. A few of S’s friends might be attending Wash U, next year. Awesome school! It’s all about “fit” right, (as long as it’s in the family budget!) There is a FB page, if your D is at all interested in Grinnell. It’s a very kind, creative, hard-working group of students there. A strong sense of community. I’m sure N Dame was a disappointment, but like I said above - there is some glimmer of hope!

@AsleepAtTheWheel - Loved your vacation story! You are a lucky 61 year old dude!

Hope you S enjoys his visits this weekend, @kittymom1102 - He has so many schools to consider! You must be very proud!

So glad you had an amazing overnight at your school, @readingclaygirl! You deserve a break and some fun times, after all you’ve been through lately! Hope the rest of your senior year is calm and peaceful, since you’ve got most of your proverbial “ducks in a row!”

Hoping for more good news, and sending cake (or fresh-baked pie) and ice cream wishes for those in need of a little consolation!

Heading out for turkey burgers and great locally brewed beer with my hubby! Goodnight to all! :-h

Thank you so much @morningside95 I hope so too.

@nubble16 we also experienced the Pomona rejection yesterday as well as Mudd. DS had a rough night. We were able to counter it a bit by a UCLA accept but it really didn’t take the sting out.

Sorry for the rejections @LKnomad lots of ice cream for S and hugs for you

@readingclaygirl, hope you didn’t have to wait too long for your host to wake up! (Glad you had a great day according to your later post.)

Glad your daughter is pleased with her very great results, @Sophmore1, but sorry it’s been tempered by other puzzling decisions.

@crowlady, hugs for today’s less-than-great news. So glad your S moved on quickly. Like @labegg, I look forward to the decision. (And my heart hurts for your friend.)

LKnomad, big hugs to you and your very talented S.

@ProbDeferred, so sorry about the deferral to waitlist. :frowning:

@“Queen’s Mom”: hope the visit was terrific.

@frenchtoastlover, seems like you have enough great stuff to walk way from a February admission? I agree with @dyiu13 about the downside despite the school’s attempt to “sell” it (and I agree with @waiting2exhale that it’s spin–saw that analysis after I wrote the last sentence). In any case, I feel so very glad that it didn’t break your winning streak–it counts as another admit for sure! Now, I’m adding on to this paragraph after your last note: if you do decide you’re interested, maybe you should go back and ask whether fall is possible.

Hugs and ice cream to @nubble16’s D, but turns she is getting the best advice from nubble:

I think you did a pretty good job with your list, @AsleepAtTheWheel, no matter what you might say about roving attention span. What a terrific trip with your S14. I think we all need to start doing spring break with our college-aged kids! Next up: College Confidential Parents Do Cancun! And big congrats on S14’s admission to the Emory business program.

@allboyz: congratz on the top school admit! Congrats to @happymochi for UCLA and Harvey Mudd. (Too bad about the computer crash…). Congrats on Rochester, @Almondjoy1 (glad you can ignore the randomness now), to @momofzag, and to @palm715 (awesome ministory, Palm. You should be a writer). @AnxietyAttack77, hurrah for BU-BME. Very cool! Congrats to @calimum on two very nice northwest options. @MidwestMomTo2, congrats on BU and here’s hoping your head doesn’t have to spin much longer. @highbury, congrats on Davidson. Wahoo!
