Parents of the HS Class of 2016 (Part 1)

@Ballerina016 I would think business casual should be appropriate. I wouldn’t go super casual.

@carolinamom2boys Congratulations again! It really sounds like you have raised a great kid!

DD was accepted to VIllanova Nursing School.

Now to go tackle the verification.

Great news @hopetoachieve!

Congrats @carolinamom2boys !!!

Congrats @Justathought1 and how unfair @lknomad! Maybe they put you on some sort of watchlist for some inexplicable reason.

We have an Eagle, and I’m a blubbering, hot mess! :((

That is so great @carolinamom2boys ! We will be attending one this weekend for a group of four of my son’s friends, the last of his “group” to Eagle. My son turns 18 in a few weeks, so this will be about our last “official” event…I am sure my eyes will be a bit damp as well!

@Ballerina016 @texaspg MIT did a medium job of helping kids with stress when I was there (the whole year was Pass/No-Record and now it’s only one semester of P/D/No-Record or something like that - but there wasn’t a lot of emotional support or tutoring available etc.).

My impression now, but I would love to hear more from @Waiting2exhale with newer information, is that MIT is even kinder/gentler. My MIL was upset 25 years ago that MIT didn’t really honor the MIT parent community or include them or invite them to anything - but already that has not been my experience since Pi Day.

There is a wide variety of styles at any college, but generally those who tend to be more academically successful, I’ve noticed, are those who are self-aware and can ask for help when needed.

By pure chance, my Lands’ End order came the other day and it included some T-shirts for DS25, including both burgundy and orange. DS16 said, “hedging your bets?” and I hadn’t even thought about it! But yes, MIT’s colors are “blood and concrete” (or maybe “blood and steel”?).

My S14’s best friend, the neighbor kid across the street (our boys grew up together), is a sophomore at MIT. He’s a bright, but not an exceptional kid. His ticket to MIT was as a recruited athlete (together with excellent grades, and very good (but not off the wall) standardized test scores). He has done just fine there. He gets no special treatment as an athlete (i.e., no tutors, etc.), so that plays no part in his success.
A couple of years ago when he was considering MIT I read a bunch of threads on the MIT CC page. There were all sorts of horror stories about the work load, the pressure, etc. I remember reading about years where there were a number of suicides there. But he has found it quite manageable, and has done quite well grade-wise.

@fretfulmother - I see that second semester is graded as no record if grade is below C.

My personal take on MI T - It ain’t all that either. People will do fine once they get there if they are not feeling intimidated and put pressure on themselves, know their limits in terms of how much to take on. If someone wants to do engineering, it is hard all over the world unless one is good at Math, Physics and Chemistry. MI T is slightly harder than other schools for engineering but still below Cal tech.

Well it’s official, S got into UC Santa Barbara.

Congrats @Mysonsdad! Does this change anything or is he still sure about the UCLA plan?

So happy for your DD @labegg! Congratulations on all the musical options.

Congratulations @carolinamom2boys !

Congratulations @Justathought1 ! Being done is great!!

Enjoy that ceremony @carolinamom2boys. You have all contributed to that achievement.

Congratulations @mysonsdad !

Yeah, so don’t read those pages @AsleepAtTheWheel is correct in pointing out exist. Just hold on tight to the parent group right here, listen to your child, keep the care packages rolling, and follow the advice from @texaspg above, 'cause it’s not about race, but about pace - their own.

I feel hopeful that the kids of parents on this list will be successful–partly because colleges will admit students who will do well as @oneundecided says and party because the parents on this list do so much research and will be a helpful support network. It’s one reason everyone is so generous as we share information–just as @Waiting2exhale, @texaspg, @AsleepAtTheWheel, and @fretfulmother are doing now. (Although, unlike Tex, I do believe it is “all that.” :D) I have a friend whose son is at MIT, FretfulMa, and she tells me all the time how great the parents’ website, weekend, recipe sharing, (etc.) are.

Sorry about the stress, @Almondjoy1. I hope it is partly resolved at the admitted students’ day.

Great strategies for preparing your great kid, @LKnomad, but super bummer about the FA verification. :frowning: Same for you, @Hope2achieve.

I agree that I can’t do CC on my phone, @PAO2008, though I know many people do. I hope the admitted student days go well.

Congrats on your daughter’s music email, @labegg, what a terrific opportunity out of the blue…or, more accurately, out of many hours of practicing! Congrats on your son’s (and your) achievement, @carolinamom2boys…I loved hearing about that project…so glad you enjoyed that Court of Honor. Congrats on being done, @Justathought1! Great news! Congrats on Villanova Nursing, @Hope2achieve!!! Hurray, hurray, hurray, @Mysonsdad, on UCSB and your son’s winning streak.

And this time it’s my turn to say “what @eastgrad said!”
