Parents of the HS Class of 2016 (Part 1)

So, our long day . . .

After I got home from work I got more than two hours of an excited blow by blow of my S’s team’s first place finish in the county cyber-robot competition for MESA (Math Engineering Science Achievement). They killed it in all aspects and my S is extremely jazzed about the software they developed, their cryptography, their paper, their presentation, and finally in how the team really came together, including a freshman who hadn’t put in any time until the very end. Especially nice for little bro S16 to be able to celebrate a win with big bro S14 (home for spring break). Big bro was the one who used to get all the attention with It’s Academic wins. I think S16 is finally coming into his own; he was the major driver throughout the process and he knows it.

Unfortunately, his school didn’t field a team for one of other two challenges, so were not able to advance to the state competition. He’s crushed because he thought they could win their category and now he’ll never know. But also extremely proud of himself. And I’m proud too

@TwoBoyzOneG1rl, @sseamom, and @readingclaygirl , count me as another person who wants smart teachers. With a nationwide teacher shortage predicted, it’s a smart profession to choose. And I agree @dyiu13 and @bookmom7: no shade throwing at social workers is allowed.

Thanks for the helpful website, @dyiu13.

Good luck with the waiting, @dbjs70, @4kids2graduate.

Good luck with assassins, @Almondjoy1. Yikes–grad announcements, @livinginLA and cap & gown, @sseamom. Too soon.

I really like the switch to chocolate fondue, @finaidpuzzled.

@fretfulmother, glad there is a bright side to homework and that it includes laundry. Hope everything works smoothly tomorrow.

@AsleepAtTheWheel, I hope it is not rude to say that unless @bookmom7 is a very young mama, your strategy works better for men than women.

@texaspg, I’ve never heard of any crossing the river in travels between those two universities, except perhaps occasionally by those tech kids who have spent a raucous evening at their fraternity :), but I do think DD16 would be privileged to take classes with the children of @Ballerina016, @fretfulmother, @kittymom1102, etc.-- even when they bring up the curve. (Re crossing: the Business School and Med School are on the other side of the river, as will be the Allston campus on completion.)

So sorry on the rejection, @frenchtoastlover, @“Queen’s Mom”, and @ProbDeferred. Hugs and ice cream and chocolate fondue. Boo to waitlists, @Mysonsdad, @ProbDeferred, and @Dragonflygarden. It seems so cruel to extend the waiting.

@LKnomad…yahoo on the Oxy acceptance and great FA! Great rewards for your great kid. And…if laundry brings a kid home for a visit, I would do it willingly. @TwoBoyzOneG1rl, congrats on the housing deposit at UCR. A sunshiny start for your kid in so many ways. @indsfolax, congrats on all your S’s UC acceptances. Great choices! @arisamp, congrats on raising a considerate, grounded child. @carolinamom2boys, congrats on paying your deposit to a terrific school with a terrific package–well deserved after your and your son’s careful consideration and research. A very emotional two days for you! Congrats to your D’s friend, @BeeDAre. Congrats on W&M, @Dragonflygarden. Such a storied school. Congrats on the MESA cyber robot, @crowlady. Pretty cool achievement.

lol!!! @EastGrad - no young mama here! =))

Early start to spring break- snow day called for tomorrow!

Sorry about the bad news from Vanderbilt, @ProbDeferred. My D got the same news today. We probably couldn’t have afforded Vandy, anyway.

@ProbDeferred I am sorry about the final reject. I know that is hard hard to have choices thrust upon you, even if you would have made that choice yourself.

@frenchtoastlover well there had to be one on your list that didn’t work out. You will have a lot of choices this April.

Cake and my condolences for those who learned of bad news today, and cake for those who learned of good news. Cake works either way.

I simply cannot keep up with the constant information on CC!

@EastGrad that must have been the most individual mentions in one post to-date. In the immortal words of Wayne & Garth, “We’re not worthy!” ^:)^

@carolinamom2boys you have been so gracious and helpful on this thread. Congratulations on a wonderful choice.

@finaidpuzzled thank you for breaking us out of the ice cream and cake rut. I LOVE fondue. My food congrats or condolences as appropriate, freshly picked Maui strawberries dipped in local chocolate and served with champagne. Or for the students who join us on this thread, a wholesome glass of milk.

Super busy day on the thread today. A big THANK YOU to @eastgrad for the awesome sparknotes post, as usual! Congrats too those with new acceptances and decisions made. Big warm hugs and sweets to those with disappointing news. My heart is heavy for you. This process is such a roller coaster!

D has a very good friend that is having a difficult time, getting shut out of her safety and match schools. It’s awful. She’s a great kid. I hope something comes through for her during the next few days.

Today, D and I took a day trip to UCSB for another look and to keep her occupied, rather than waiting around for college results. It was a gorgeous day in SB. The campus was very quiet due spring break. While we were checking out the brand new library, D found out she was accepted to Wellesley and let out a very quiet library-style yell. She’s thrilled! FA comes out tomorrow and I’m basically hoping for a miracle.

Best of luck to everyone waiting on acceptances tomorrow. It’ll be another nail-biter!

@ProbDeferred I’m so very this experience hasn’t gone as you’d hoped. You’ll do great things, this is just a bump in the road. Wishing you much success.

Wow-I was busy all evening so I am way, way behind. My older D unexpectedly came by and son was here too, so we had a chance to visit and catch up. The two D’s had a nice chat, looked at clothes online, and older D was gifted with some of younger D’s clothes and shoes she no longer wanted. Now older one and son are downstairs binge-watching something. I’ve had kids underfoot for 31 years-hard to believe that in a few months I’ll have an empty nest!

Congrats to those of you with acceptances, deposits, etc.! The finish line is in sight for all now.

To those with disappointed news-I’m sorry that you’re dealing with that. Even if expected, it’s no fun.

Thanks everyone.

Definitely @LKnomad. I really can’t be mad haha

@Undercovermom1 - D16 has a good friend with significantly better stats (top 7%, over 32 ACT, cheerleader) that has been rejected and deferred from all of her choices so far… Vanderbilt, Tulane, U of Denver, U of Wisconsin, she is still waiting on 2more but right now she only has her in-state auto admits to choose from, good choices, but she really wanted to leave the state.

U Wisconsin from Texas - has she seen Greenbay play during winter?

@texaspg , lol, yep (she is a U Wisconsin legacy!) Stop…my D16 picked Marquette. ( Thank goodness we visited over Valentine’s Day when the temp didn’t get over 7 and it snowed.)

7C or F? Guess it needs to be F for snow?

Where is the admit/accept list? I only sporadically read this forum.

@helpfulandtryinghttp://■■■■■■■/class2020

As an aside – again, I understand folks not wanting to post specifics on the thread while still deliberating, but I’m hopeful that once we get to May 1 everyone will enter their info.

Just saw pics of the storm in Greenbay. Yikes! D has a couple of acceptances in that area. I should wake her up and make her look, considering we were walking by the beach in our flip flops yesterday!

@labegg it’s just crazy! Hoping something comes thru for your DD’s friend. My D’s friend has been shut out of her instate safety.
