Thank you all! And haha @bookmom7, I’d certainly try!
So much happens when you step away from the boards for a bit! Congrats/condolences/continued support all around. Reading through everyone’s successes, disappointments, and ongoing waiting/wondering makes you realize what you’re going through isn’t really different from everyone else. (Insert high school musical ‘We’re all in this together’ here)
We have an admitted student visit coming up. We’ve already visited once, but it was during the summer, so this will be nice for D to spend the night, see some classes, etc. (And miss a few days of school. She started having Senioritis last year. Hahaha) She’s been lurking on the facebook group page and is in a group chat. I’ve heard nothing but giggles and stories of all the cool people chiming in, so that seems like a good sign.
We are past spring break. Kids are counting down days to AP exams and graduation. It’s going to be here before we know it!
I just wanted to say that my fingers are crossed for all of you waiting on decisions tomorrow! Thankfully for us the last decision was received this past Friday. This should make all of you very happy…because it allows me to be the virtual bartender tomorrow as decisions come in and a stiff drink is needed! Hoping the drinks will be celebratory for all…but we all know that in this crazy competitive/random/lottery process that is not possible. So, no matter what the news…tomorrow the virtual drinks are on the house!
I specialize in frozen huckleberry margaritas …this is the pacific northwest and huckleberry ANYTHING makes us happy!
Why do I feel like it us Christmas Eve? We are just waiting and waiting. (No offense to my non Christian friends).
S is spending tomorrow night at UCLA with some friends. He met a girl from the next town over who is going to UCLA, the money required upfront to pay is very doable and the other expenses we pay along the way are also doable. A friend who is about to graduate from UCLA has put all of S fears about his major to rest, S found out that with his AP and CE courses he may be able to graduate in 3 years instead of four. For the past 4 years he has worked hard to get into an Ivy, now he doesn’t want to be rejected, but wonders what to do if accepted. He has also started notifying colleges declining their acceptance. With all the problems in the world it is nice that these are our biggest concerns. One more day and this is all over.
Congratulations on the scholarships and acceptances. Chin-up to those who didn’t get the news they wanted.
I have friends who are still waiting for decisions. They are so ready for it to just be done at this point
Have you seen this? I apologize if it’s already been linked. I got my laugh for the day. http://www.nytimes.com/2016/03/30/opinion/college-admissions-shocker.html
@psychmomma: I LOVE THAT!
(Couldn’t even get past the first paragraph without erupting into uproarious, belly shaking laughter.)
EDITED : for tears running down my cheeks!
I now see it’s posted over in the general admissions thread- I mostly check in here so didn’t see it. My Facebook friends are getting a kick out of it. Especially this year- so many schools with record applications and low acceptance rates.
@psychmomma thanks for posting that! :))
The thing about the haiku and recipe using kale was so dang funny.
@MuggleMom: Hello, glad to meet you. I really think your daughter is quite self-aware, and wonderfully keen-minded because the only person from a FB chat page I think my daughter might consider meeting up with would be @readingclaygirl - to which I would say ‘yes.’
@frenchtoastlover: I thought you got denied from Wellesley.
(JK - secret congrats; that is awesome)
@4kids2graduate : Huckleberry? Suuuure. (Gonna look that up.)
@mysonsdad: Looks like your son’s dance card is officially now full, and the music is still playing. Here’s wishing you well, 'dad.
@sseamom : Don’t tell people on CC you rarely went to a particular class…could bring down the wrath. #-o
@Waiting2exhale --and it was at a public flagship! I’m probably not even worthy to post on CC! Seriously, the guy only read straight out of the book-and it was sociology-which would have actually been an interesting class otherwise. I’m sure now they take attendance and all that, but not back in the day. I showed up only for the assigned quizzes and exams.
@psychmomma That article/spoof was welcome comic relief to this crazy process…I loved it!
@Waiting2exhale Huckleberries grow wild in the mountains around here…and are very desirable and hard to harvest in more than small quantities! Great in pancakes too…a little like a blueberry but better!
@dyui13 your research skills are top notch! I bet ppl would hire you as their DC’s College Private Eye!
@frenchtoastlover congrats! May your good fortune extend well through tomorrow’s acceptances.
@mysonsdad I hope your S enjoys his overnight!
D has mentioned that several of her accepted FB groups have indeed been different. One - everyone talked about partying. Big turn off for her. Another - everyone was super nerdy. And then her two favs - very friendly students that seem to share lots of common interests. Yay!
@Undercovermom1 D has found that a heavy party vibe on some of the Facebook groups she joined, which was an immediate turn-off for her, though in some cases it was far less prevalent in the Honors FB page, which is where she expects to find her people most of the time.
Another data point to compare schools is the yikyak app. They have a peek function where you can listen in on the timeline for various schools but can’t comment. A lot of it is junk but we did also see a lot of confirmation for things we already suspected.
@dcplanner Is it pretty easy to get on Yik Yak and find your way around. I admit, im curious!
Will CC crash tomorrow, I wonder. Ivy day and all?
Wait, is that really tomorrow? I thought it was April 1. (Kind of a cruel day to release decisions, so I thought they just didn’t g.a.d)
On the eve of Ivy Day I was reminded of this quote on Marquette’s admission’s pages regarding admission notification (I think it was actually an influencing factor in D16 final decision to choose Marquette) well, it was reassuring anyway!
*But I really, really, really need to know now!
We appreciate your enthusiasm! Sit tight. Knit. Read a book. Decisions are sent only by mail. Admission decisions are not given by phone, email, text message, tweet or carrier pigeon (well, maybe golden eagle). Mailing might seem a little old fashioned, but in a world of instant gratification, it’s sometimes nice to pause, reflect, and to open something tangible.
All of my friends have heard, but I haven’t. Is that bad? Good? Something else?
Take a deep breath. Letters are not mailed in any particular order (e.g., admitted students do not hear before waitlisted students, etc). So much is dependent on Marquette’s mail room, the postal service, mail returned because you may have moved, accidental coffee spills (with apologies to Claire from Concord, N.H.), etc. We anticipate that the majority of decision letters will reach applicants no later than the end of January. It is normal for students from the same school or living in the same neighborhood to receive a decision letter one, two or even 10 days later.*
