Parents of the HS Class of 2016 (Part 1)

@texaspg Yes. We are aware she need a permission to defer a year. It does not seem to hard to have a year.

Stopping in to say hello! I’ve been MIA due to a bad case of mom senioritis, but I have been cheering for all of the fabulous kids making decisions on this thread! <:-P =D> ^:)^

Our boat has fully docked but we haven’t thrown the anchor overboard yet. Waiting on a FA appeal before we do that. S is excited about the admitted students program coming up, the only one he wants to attend. I tried to convince him to visit a few others (so I could squeeze in a few mini vacations), but he is too pragmatic. ā€œDon’t you want to visit XYZ so you can see what you’re turning down?ā€ Uhhh…nope. Darn. ;))

However, he has been slow to decline admission to some of his accepted schools. My guess was that he’s worked so hard through high school and on college apps that he was savoring the sweetness of this moment. But then he said something the other day that gave me a clue. He said he still can’t believe he got into his favorite school. It feels surreal to him. I think it will feel real-er after the admitted students weekend!

@palm715 A girl after my own heart! I just checked and there’s a TJ’s less than a mile from his school! Yippee!

@HappyDad2112 It’s good to see you again. I’ve been wondering about you and your D. Congrats to her; so many wonderful choices!

@EastGrad No pressure, but I’ve missed your recaps!

We might take the prize for indecision in our house. D did a late audition for a BFA program and we have not heard back from that school. In the meantime there are still the top two BA programs and the possible HS postgraduate year schools we have not visited yet, not to mention a possible gap year internship. We are overwhelmed. Ugh. At least they are all good options.

Well we have our last visit this Friday and we should have a decision on Sat. I am working on a financial aid appeal letter based on medical bills for the last choice, which I have a feeling, knowing my son, will be the actual final choice, so we shall see how that goes. They gave us a quote that was $4000 higher than his other need based schools. Seems trivial but in the grand scheme of things, it really is not.

Fingers crossed.

Oh and after months of various UC verification fun, personal statement verification, then UCLA and UCB FAFSA verification, he has crossed all UCs off his list anyway. Sigh.

@readingclaygirl I was on a plane this weekend and the people in the row behind me were talking about your school–the girl went there. I wanted to turn around and say ā€œhey, I ā€˜know’ someone who’s going to go there!ā€ DS convinced me that was creepy.
Welcome back @HappyDad2112

That’s not creepy! @Almondjoy1 It’s actually quite cool.

Glad you could check back in @HappyDad2112
@LKnomad - goodness- you do still have quite a story to tell about all of those hoops you jumped through! Hopefully he just finds the right place- good luck!
Congrats @PhilaSkiMom & @missbwith2boys !

Welcome back, @HappyDad2112! So happy to hear news about your D again!

@Reckless Wow…having that many unknowns at this point in the game is crazy…I am just stressed reading about your choices and last minute additions to the mix! Good luck with it all…and we just may need to hire you as the captain of the boat!

@HappyDad2112 So happy ā€œdadā€ resurfaced after hunkering down incognito for a bit…I was also wondering if we would eventually get an update from you. At one point it sounded like your child was going for a special housing situation at a certain university affiliated with a program your child did last summer (trying to be vague and general here for security purposes - lol!). It does not look like that school is one of the top contenders anymore… curious why not?

Thanks for welcome!!!

@4kids2graduate She was officially accepted to the house and the university. But the school is a little bit low in her list now. I don’t know exactly why she changed her mind. I will follow her a little bit more…

DS16 picks up his cap and gown and announcements on Friday. Seniors are dismissed after exams on May 20 and only attend special events and practices until Graduation on June 2. We received his "rules " for receiving tickets and how guests are expected to act today. 50 days and counting. It feels like time is speeding up every day .

@HappyDad2112: Welcome back. Congratulations to your daughter. Congratulations to you for guiding her through this arduous process. Hope she enjoys the gap year.

Picked up prom 1 tuxedo!

Also had to buy a new backpack. The last one finally completely died. Guess what my DS is getting (got) for graduation?

We are getting ready to leave tomorrow for an admitted students event at one of the two contenders for DS.

I have 2 objective for this visit:

  1. Determine if any other aid is available.
  2. (If not) Hope he doesn’t fall in love with it.

…I have such mixed emotions about this visit now- just hoping for the best.

Welcome back @HappyDad2112 !

Best of luck, @bookmom7. Sounds like a dangerous visit!

Finally got to talk to my S after a local visit to his safety yesterday. Two things were clear. One, he really does enjoy his chosen field and the college ā€˜just next door’ has many great opportunites. Two, many of these would be with my former colleagues and current friends (I used to work in the department and we still socialize with several of them). That seems awkward. He is not changing his choice for fall but we are thinking he could line up an excellent summer work experience with a grad student or even an older undergrad working with a professor.

Welcome back @HappyDad2112.

S sent us an email about going to orientation, sent from his new Temple account. He accidentally put himself as class of 2017 in his signature; I asked if he was planning on graduating in 1 year.

@mstomper He must have loaded up on AP and DD classes.

Caps and gowns - that’s an item that I’m crossing my fingers about. D was out of school they day they measured and ordered caps and gowns. It was not preannounced that they would be doing it that day and she didn’t realize until a few days later that she had even missed it. When she inquired about it, she was told ā€œWe order extra so you will get oneā€. So that is all I know. I guess the school takes care of ordering and paying? She couldn’t find out anything more about it. Right now I’m just hoping that I don’t have a kid graduating without a cap and gown. But if that’s how it works out, so be it.

Graduation parties is another issue in my house. June is a always a very busy month for me from a work travel perspective. I have to leave for a business trip a few hours after D’s graduation so no party that day. The next weekend we will be traveling for D’s orientation session. The weekend after that I have to go on another business trip. The first day I can throw a party is the last weekend in June. D is not happy about that.

We did grad party in August. And even then it was hard to find a good date that worked for many.
