@crowlady Hahahaha. That’s funny about the CC threads. I was wondering how long do I keep these bookmarks of colleges that my DD will not go to. Sometime’s it’s good to see others so excited that they are going to the school. But then sometimes I feel like a voyeur and wonder why am I still looking at this thread. One day I am going to unbookmark these threads. Just not yet…
@crowlady, thanks. I found the public page and agree it’s very quiet. I wondered if there was something else out there that I wasn’t finding.
Also @dbjs70 I hear there’s a very active pep band at RIT that helps make up for no marching band.
I’m also interested if there is an active RIT parents page. DS hasn’t committed yet, we have one more school for an accepted students day, but right now everything is pointing in that direction. My S is much more interested in a pep band than a marching band - our HS doesn’t do a great job with marching band so he’s completely against the idea. But pep band, that’s something he likes. And he liked what they played at the accepted students day.
Usually marching bands are tied to football program. RIT doesn’t have one?
I remember a few years ago UT San Antonio started a marching band as precursor to creating a football program. It was interesting to see that the band was starting almost a year ahead.
RIT’s football team has been undefeated since the late 70s. In other words, they don’t have one. From what I’ve heard, ice hockey is the big sport.
@carolinamom2boys love it! Do you think the clarity fairy has wings strong enough to fly over the Pacific Ocean? D’s down to two.
@4kids2graduate I am so impressed with your son’s financial stretch school and continuing the mythical creatures theme, I wish you a leprechaun with a pot of gold.
@crowlady and @krnBoston he will will most likely be doing pep band. I can’t imagine him not. We’ve already promised him some gear to keep him warm at the hockey games (which, yes, is the big sport).
One of the reasons it was so hard for him to give up the idea of marching band was that it became his “family” in HS. He was part of a very successful, long running program. They were state champions for their group his freshman and sophomore years.
Interestingly, one of the things we kept hearing about from the schools that had marching bands was that a high percentage of them were engineering majors (which my S will be). There seems to be something about STEM kids and music that go together.
@dbjs70 yes, we also saw a lot of engineering programs mentioning music opportunities. I am sorry to say that my DS had such a horrible initial experience with band (horrible director that is no longer around) that he is not into music except as a member of the audience. So glad my DD chose strings instead!
The connection between mathematics and music might explain some of that. Our very mathy S21 plays the cello and definitely sees math in the music…and yes, he wants to be an engineer (-:
Nice to see the decisions rolling in. In our case, S is out of town for a conference - so no thought of college this week. We’ll have to wait until the middle of next week before we bring this up again. I think the decision is all but made - we just have to vocalize it and pay up the deposit
Stings a bit to be turning down a full tuition scholarship at a couple of different schools - but his best fit seems to be at the school that doesn’t offer any merit aid. Sigh.
@texaspg - D was similar to your kids. She did her BME from Case and is headed to med school this fall. BME was not an easy choice, especially since a kid headed to med school needs to keep the GPA high, but it is indeed do-able as she demonstrated!
@arisamp - we have the same two groups -2012 and 2016. The older one is also finishing up to start med school. The younger one has not started yet.
@Cheeringsection We’re a strings family too . Or were until we had a bad experience with the orchestra teacher. Both boys play viola.
My daughter will be attending Beloit College as well.
When she was 10 years old, we walked across campus (her sister attended there) and she said,“I’m going here.” Eight years, 11 applications, and nine cross-country college visits later, and guess what…She’s going to Beloit. A girl who knows her own mind–and as with your son, knows a good fit when she sees one. It’s a wonderful school (her alum sister adored it).
@Cheeringsection, my S’s band director “retired” from marching band after his junior year.
No one cared for his replacement, and a bunch of the junior class members threatened not to return to march their senior year if she returned. Fortunately, for all of us, the original director “unretired” and came back. I think it pained him to think of kids not returning to an activity they loved because of a poorly run program.
@Mary13, One of my high school friends went to Beloit (waaaay back in the late '70s!) and I remembered it being such a cool little campus. I dragged my son there for a visit under protest, he had no interest whatsoever… until he saw the anthropology museum. Then he fell in love.
Oddly enough, my son had an experience similar to your daughter’s, but his was Carthage College when his older sister visited (she hated it). Carthage was still his first choice going into this search process, but visiting a few other small LACs dropped it to the bottom of his list. Especially given his new enthusiasm for anthropology, which Carthage doesn’t offer.
@carolinamom2boys My D is a humanities kid all the way, but played viola from 3rd-12th grade. This thrilled my mother, who is a retired music teacher with a master’s degree. She was also very good in math but as she tells it, in her day, girls were not encouraged to pursue math fields. My mom is in her 80s and still plays the piano every day. It is a key part of who she. She plays chamber music with other retiree friends as well. Maybe my D will get back to it at some point as she really did enjoy it.
Clarity Fairy! Ha!!!
Pretty please come visit my house. ;))
@arisamp how did your daughter like Case? My DD is looking hard at Case. she did an overnight there last month. Its on the short list. Thanks
