Yay @pittsburghscribe!
D’s Nov 1 apps are all in <:-P
@WhereIsMyKindle —JEALOUS! Two hours away, I would bet.
MODERATOR’S NOTE:
Questions about moderation should be addressed to a moderator, not on a public forum (as ToS states). I’ve PM’d you the answers.
DS went to school after first 2 periods and there were 2 kids (including him) in his AP Eng Lit class and 4 kids in Calculus 3. Seniors are taking Ditch day seriously. It is unexcused absence but kids who are doing well are okay.
QOTD: I’d like to have DS take the student loan, I help him pay off, and help build credit. DH and DS might refuse. Cash kind of people. :)) DH has only one credit card which he would rather not have.
@pittsburghscribe Congratulations!! <:-P <:-P
Hope everyone recovers quickly from stress, meltdown, or bug going around :x and stay healthy. =D>
I’ve been procrastinating looking at my ballot and voter guide cheat sheet, oh boy.
So, SCEA app filed just now. Slight fright when I moved on to the payment page and it said that I would be paying $75 to Northeastern, which is not on his college list. Not sure how that glitch happened but glad it was easily remedied.
Apparently he is now working on the three Michigan essays simultaneously. I offered to proof the completed ones, but all are a WIP. 46 minutes.
D got her first acceptance, which was not a top choice school, but still pretty exciting for her. I finished the FAFSA and then slogged my way through the CSS/Profile. Not very exciting for me, but at least it’s done. #:-S
D, H, and I spent nearly an hour going over our ballots of what seemed like a hundred amendments and propositions. I’m really glad we have mail-in/drop-off ballots. It was useful to look up info and discuss the issues while filling in the sheets. Good luck to those who will have to endure long lines next week.
Skin in the game
We don’t think D needs skin in the game. She’s always been a hard worker and if we won the powerball it would be school of her choice though end of PhD (if wanted). But I don’t buy powerball tickets, so that plan won’t work. At this point we’re going with H’s plan that we pay X to her. She pays for COA over X with loans, co-op, internships, work-study, etc. If through some freak cosmic event she got a full-ride at a school she was willing to attend, she’d still get X. I’d like to add in a much smaller amount Y that we’d pay toward school costs, but which she wouldn’t get if not needed for UG. We’ll see who gets their way in the end.
Senior ditch day
D’s school does this in May. Apparently the seniors in her AP chem class were not too happy that the appointed day last year was the day of their AP test. She won’t skip; not her style. S18’s school (different HS) had their ditch day today. In his AP Calc BC class the teacher looked around: “I see most of our seniors are out. Today I’ll introduce the fundamental theorem of calculus.” :))
@thshadow, I sent both SAT and ACT to Rose-Hulman early October and they arrived fine. I hope your score issue clears up. Case sent us portal info pretty quick, so you should be seeing that soon.
Hope it gets done with ample time to punch in the CC number! =D> =D>
Congrats @pittsburghscribe and @snoozn on the acceptances!
@mommdc You’re right, there is still time. I actually have a summer job lined up for her if she wants to take it, through an acquaintance. I even found a nice, cheap, awesome summer program for D20. I’m really liking this CC mojo.
@payn4ward – Love those above!
I could add ‘applicant’s willingness to accept Mom’s word choice edits increases as clock ticks down to midnight’.
I wish we could have this subgroup of the 2017 group where we could track acceptances. In the meantime, echoing @hadmeathello in saying CONGRATS to @pittsburghscribe & @snoozn.
I have missed the QOTD today.
Sr Skip Day—barely happens now that Seniors all run off to internships the minute they all finish their AP exams. I think it has been backed up to April due to APs and internships.
Skin in the game—just their own spending money: dining out with friends, albums, concert tickets & tee shirts, movies, etc. Older son has been working every summer since the one after 10th grade (and even funded a Roth IRA last year). Younger son has never worked a day in his life but will be looking for work as soon as Jan apps are in. He funds his own limited social life out of birthday/Christmas cash and the random $20 bill that Grandma sends for Halloween, etc.
I am still paying everything else including gas & car insurance, cell phones, clothing, hair cuts, etc. Neither one is a big spender on clothing, but if that should change, I would have to introduce some sort of allowance. Older son told me today that he has cracked his phone screen so badly that he needs to replace it, but he knows that expense is his.
Whatever I do, I want to be consistent.
Congratulations @snoozn on the acceptance ! <:-P <:-P
Congrats to @snoozn and @pittsburghscribe on the big envelopes!
As for me, I am happy to report that refreshing the LOR page on Naviance over the course of 10 hours finally resulted in “submitted.” Always happy to do my part to keep the process moving along.
Congrats @snoozn and @pittsburghscribe on the acceptances!!!. Senior ditch day isn’t until spring here after APtesting is over. Our high school doesn’t get out until late June so there’s plenty of time left for ditching. The senior stupid to sleep in tomorrow, it’s PSAT testing for the younger kids. Between that and the fact that they had Monday off from school it’s a relatively easy week for our class of 2017 other than any kids dealing with November 1 deadlines of course.
No wait lists are likely here far more likely would be deferrals to regular decision but we hope that doesn’t happen either. We will need merit so a wait list would mean the school is most likely not an option.
Let me join the others in offering congrats to @pittsburghscribe and @snoozn. I had no idea that Tulane gave out their acceptances and merit awards to early on. It was originally on D’s list, but like @hadmeathello, it was the one that got away…we’ve managed to pick up some replacements alongs the way…I’m just glad we finally got some EAs and the FAFSA/CSS profile finally done!
Going on the wait list: No. Just no.
Post count: So if I act like a CHANCE ME!!1!!!11!!! kid and bump this thread two times after posting this, I’d get the honor of making post 20k to the thread.
We all scare me—I think we may need to find ourselves some extra hobbies to burn off some energy. =))
Congratulations to both @snoozn and @pittsburghscribe! Also, congrats to everyone whose kids met the Nov 1 deadline.
Huge congratulations to the kids of @snoozn and @pittsburghscribe!
Was offline last night for awhile trying to help DS get Maker Portfolio done for his Nov. 1 app – finally submitted around 11:30 - thank goodness we had already uploaded his video portion bc OF COURSE our Internet started to kick us off around 11 and we had to keep logging in again.
Congrats to all the kids (and their parents!) who met a Nov 1 deadline. Next ones are Dec 1 for chance at some merit aid. Yesterday I made a (depressing) chart listing the remaining supp essays if DS applies to all the schools still on his list - 26! Only 2 or 3 questions are basically the same and “why us” ones I suppose. This weekend I hope DS takes a good hard look at he list and starts to take some schools off.
Congrats @snoozn!
I think D’s next deadline is Dec 15, but she wants everything done before Thanksgiving. Yeah kid, me too.
:))
@itsgettingreal17 I owe you a reply which will come later this am
@CA1543 – why did the internet knock you off @ 11pm? I am assuming this is the MIT app, but perhaps there are others with this maker thing I still have not seen.
I knew my son was taking a huge risk submitting as late as he did, (confirmation email date stamped 11:59pm!!!), especially when the payment info transmission failed and had to be re-entered. Want to pass along a story to scare him enough that he applies earlier for the next round.
