Parents of the HS Class of 2017 (Part 1)

Did someone say “elite”?

@dfbdfb — OK, I’ll bite. What is the significance? I would ask my son, but he is at the monthly math team meet? And I don’t want to admit that I am having endless conversations with ‘strangers’ on CC.

@Motiv8tedmom23, Welcome and good job making it to your third with sanity intact. When you mention S22 and D19, I’m guessing those are ages? The custom here is that the number is the graduation year. I learned that when I mentioned something about D23 being in college! Oops, found out she is actually D11 or just “oldest D.” Glad your kid17 made the deadlines!

I dunno how cool we are @dfbdfb – according to my kids 1337 5p34k is soooo 90’s! B-)

stress: D told a great stress story about a recent class when a girl spontaneously started crying for no obvious reason other than stress. It was contagious. Pretty soon, nearly the entire class was weeping silently. The teacher was a bit startled when she turned around from the board and confronted a room full of tears. A girl from their grade heard about it and went home and baked cake for the entire senior class for the next day.

** Leet (or 1337)** From my friend, Google, “also known as eleet or leetspeak, is an alternative alphabet for many languages that is used primarily on the Internet. … For example, leet spellings of the word leet include 1337 and l33t; eleet may be spelled 31337 or 3l33t.”

@CT1417, probably the best place to get an introduction is [Wikipedia’s page on leet speak](Leet - Wikipedia).

And @snoozn, doesn’t that make us even cooler, by having been into it before it wasn’t even cool anymore? :))

I have been following all the posts on this thread with interest - congrats to all for getting the EA apps submitted, and so impressed with everyone who is already getting acceptances in! My daughter just submitted one ED and another that is due end of Nov. I think she is done for now and will wait to hear back from her ED school before submitting any others. So she will either have a nice, relaxing winter break or she will be frantically writing supplemental essays during those 2 weeks

On Naviance, I think the trigger for whether the app counts gets reflected for us is if the school has submitted the initial materials (i.e. transcript and GC letter/school report). In the case of the UCs and CSUs where no transcripts or GC letter/school report is needed, it automatically is reflected in the numbers once that school is added to the Colleges I am Applying To. For the other colleges, it doesn’t get reflected until the initial materials are submitted.

No idea, but I’ll join on the fun on page 1337.

@CA1543 Love his sense of humor. :x Very important in life!

I haven’t thought about it, but it dawned on me that we/DCs could start getting first rejections by mid December. Yikes! :open_mouth:
Now I start to worry =(( =((

6 weeks in advance! :)) :frowning: :((
What a relief to have an acceptance first though.
I Highly recommend rolling admission schools for future generations! =D>

Thank you for the info @snoozn, Yes, those are their ages, so I’ll correct it - S12 and D16. I wouldn’t necessarily say my sanity’s intact though.

In another CC thread. the number just corresponds to the order, S1, first son, S2, second son, etc. There I qualify S17 with ‘I don’t have 17 children!’ :))

Welcome @Motiv8tedmom23 and @LYLMom

@mamaedefamilia a girl made a cake for the entire senior class? How many kids in her class? My D has 811… everyone would maybe get a crumb with one cake!

@pittsburghscribe - Thanks for the clarification. Tulane, notwithstanding all of @fallenchemist’s sage advice, came off the list a while back – D was afraid it was too much of a party school. Back when she was considering which Restrictive/Single Choice EA school to apply to (Stanford’s rules would have allowed an early app for named scholarship consideration), she decided that she didn’t want to make that a determining factor; ultimately it came off the list entirely.)

I’m surprised at how many schools have Nov. 15th deadlines for EA/ED. I know D’s gotten a few emails to that effect.

DS just got his first acceptance - UPitt! Pretty cool personalized video message.

Congratulations @CA1543 !! <:-P <:-P

I told S that he has to get all his apps in before we leave for Thanksgiving break. That’s only 3 more. Then he can focus on the honors college apps. He actually said OK! Yay. What am I going to do when I don’t have to nag him about essays? (i’ll probably sleep better.)

Congrats to all of you who have gotten admittances. It is a good feeling! And yay for SWAG.

@LoveTheBard Tulane came off my dd’s list for the same (too much of a party school) reason. It was already teetering before that bc Fallen Chemist :frowning: had told her their language offerings were probably too limited for her. His ds graduated from Truman with a degree in Russian studies.

I don’t know why, but this just struck me as hilarious. From the daily school news blurb:

Somewhere in the district, I can see this playing out:

“What do you mean the end? We missed it? DC can’t go to college now?”

(D’17’s school wants all apps completed by November 1; not very realistic.)

If some parents aren’t quite as invested as we are and aware of the deadlines, this is going to cause some stress I’ll bet.

@dfbdfb, I am not familiar with Leet or 1337. We used to try writing words on our calculators, is it similar to that?

For example the number 38317 spells “Liebe” if you read it upside down (=German for “love”)

Congrats @ CA1543!

Shopping - I saw this online today. Kind of cute for a dorm room, but the kind of thing you want to ship direct to the school so too early to buy now. Onsale for $70 with code BD10.
