Parents of the HS Class of 2017 (Part 1)

We should not ask such things here

@CaucAsianDad Love the new avatar! Let’s see how long before it gets you jailed too. :))

@curiositycat333 - Our band state finals happened last Saturday (3rd in state!) so I can totally understand your S’s lack of time. My S was a section leader and field conductor so he was always doing band. I talked to him early in the fall and discussed the various deadlines. I told him I would work with him and we set up 2 weekly meetings on Wed and Sun to work on apps. He submitted the CA State application (for my alma mater San Diego State) early in October.

Good luck on the CA and UC apps!

S17 with large, clunky package from UChicago today…he’s been hoping for a tshirt…we’ll have to see in a few hours :-S

Congratulations, @pittsburghscribe and @snoozn !!! I’m jealous!!

Yay for @mamaedefamilia ! Same here, too! Finally the last recommendation was “submitted” and the college portal reflected the submission. Next one up is “Mid-term grade” submission in mid-November.

Today is sophomore and junior’s PSAT day. D will start at 12:40pm. Aaaaah. PSAT. Good old days…

@HiToWaMom – wow, I didn’t know the PSAT was administered in Nov. I am falling out of the loop, now that I no longer have one in the mode. Is CB now offering more PSAT dates?

@vandyeyes --did he apply to Chicago? I am actually finding it somewhat amusing. Chicago sent more to older son, who would not have been admitted and never considered applying. Meanwhile, younger son is a much stronger candidate, visited and interviewed on campus, and receives nothing other than infrequent emails. Perhaps their marketing efforts are only expended on those who have not expressed interest? Or he really bombed the on-campus interview!

Congrats to those that have already received acceptances! I’m new to the board - my 3rd and last child finished his 11/1 deadlines for EA on Monday night - next deadline is 11/15. Double checking for App Fee Waivers for any of those. This is my first one to go EA, the other two S22 and D19 went RD for all of theirs and of course had no aid from the schools. Crossing fingers this time around.

My son is always amused by the UChicago mailers. They are certainly different from the rest.

@CT1417 PSAT is always November for our district. I think I remember someone talking about PSAT much earlier.

Oh, I found this.
2016 PSAT Test Dates

The PSAT will be offered in October and November of 2016 to 10th and 11th graders. There are three possible PSAT test dates this year:
•Primary: Wednesday Oct. 19
•Alternate: Wednesday Nov. 2
•Saturday: Oct. 15

I didn’t know!

This is getting exciting! May all your kids receive big fat envelopes in the near future!

TipOTD: If you have Amazon Prime, start a list for college stuff. Then, as you hear or think of a good idea, put the item on your ‘For College’ list. It doesn’t even have to be the exact item, just something to jog your memory later. I’ve seen things mentioned on the 2016 Parents thread that I have put on my list for later.

I didn’t say it was a good tip, mind you! =))

@hadmeathello My latest plea to D to get her apps done: we can start shopping afterwards while waiting for decisions. :))

Question re Naviance: I’ve seen people say they can see how many students have applied to various colleges. On our Naviance page those numbers appear to be how many people plan to apply, not how many have applied. I base that on the numbers for UCs on Nov 1, the first day applications can be submitted, showed that well over half the normal number of applicants are showing as applied. I can’t believe that is really the case. Can other HS Naviance pages be sure those numbers are for actual applicants?

@hadmeathello Your tip gave me a great idea for a new business! College gift registry for when people ask “What does he/she need for college?”

Then I Google’d it. Yep. It exists. Target.

Always a day late and…

@youcee I posted some numbers related to ‘applications’ at D’s school. And, yes, those numbers are sure to be off. In D’s HS’s case, those numbers represent (I think) requests for transcripts. For us, the transcript request is the trigger for moving a school to your ‘Schools I’m Applying To’ list. If someone does not actually submit the app, they are still included in those numbers, unless they notify our counseling office. I only included some rather elite colleges, with the assumption those kids were applying ED. YMMV.

(I love ‘YMMV’ because it means my whole post could be crap, but I don’t have to worry since I included the disclaimer. )

@hadmeathello I suspect ours is a count based on the section titled ‘colleges I’m applying to’. It’s possible it handles Common App counts differently than UC counts, IDK.

@youcee, yes same as ours. I don’t think it treats CA vs. School-specific apps any differently, either. It’s all based on the ‘Schools I’m Applying To’

My D’s Naviance seems to show applications in the tally if “Inital Materials submitted” is displayed in the “Office Status” column. And like @hadmeathello it’s triggered by a transcript request.

Our Internet problem was I think our house BUT our browsers seemed to often also “time out” & not connect to the MIT website. I am glad it is submitted and out of our hands - huge reach and complicated by family alums. Immediately upon waking up today, DS asked - “Have I already been rejected?” At least he has a sense of humor.

Popping in during a flight delay, to say that the nerd in me feels the need to point out that this is page l337—the fifteen of us who manage to get on this page should feel very, very special for receiving the opportunity.

(One might even say, elite.)

@Dolemite My son’s has had “Initial Materials Submitted” for the UCs for a month and the application wasn’t even open for submission yet. Both of our CA schools show Pending in that column (haven’t submitted those either).
