Parents of the HS Class of 2017 (Part 1)

Haven’t chimed here yet (until now), but stop by occasionally to see what’s going on.

You guys crack me up.

Welcome @WhataProcess

And @WhatSally I don’t know the answer to your question but I came fashionably late to your tagging party

Hugs to you and your family @NerdMom88.

And congrats to your S, @STEM2017. Keep us up to date on the visit.

@WhatSally, S is in the same situation. Hasn’t committed to OU, still needs to apply for honors, and isn’t really thinking yet about housing. We are going to visit in about a month, and I figure then he can decide if he wants the honors floor or national merit floor. Hopefully waiting won’t be an issue.

News! D got accepted to Dickinson with merit!

@mamaedefamilia My niece is a Senior there and loves it. She was the student head of orientation this year.

Congrats @mamaedefamilia! Dickinson is a great school.

Anyone see @WhatSally lately?

@mamaedefamilia Congrats!!! <:-P

Heya @WhatSally

Welcome @WhataProcess

Tag – you’re it @WhatSally!

Congrats to @STEM2017 on ASU and to @mamaedefamilia for Big Mac @ Dickinson.

Sorry about what D is going through @NerdMom88 - hugs to her, to you, and to the rest of your family as she – and you – navigate these waters.

And hope your D’s arm heals quickly @Mom2aphysicsgeek

Not sure if I’ve kept up with all of @itsgettingreal17’s many successes, but congrats if I’ve missed any.

And congrats to anyone else I’ve missed that had good news and hugs to those that have had disappointments. What is it that @Dave_N always says? Onward and upward?

@mamaedefamilia Congratulations! Dickinson is great. My sister went there and my dad was on the faculty eons ago. Hooray for others with good news. Mid year grades came out today. Kid has been afflicted with senioritis, but not reflected in grades. Whew.

Has @hairypottery met @whatsally? ;))

@STEM2017 Visit while it’s still cold…

I see what you did there, @HappyGoLucky2017

@hairypottery At ASU 75 degrees is considered cold.

<:-P =)) ~O) :O) :-h Feels like a party! If your kids are as willing to laugh and as inclusive as y’all are - the class of 2021 is in for a great college experience! :-c

Totally unrelated.

My DD started her second semester elective - Auto Tech.

She and her friend are the only girls in the class. Before the class began, three different boys asked them if they were in the right class. “OMG. Can’t girls take Auto Tech???”

During the class, the teacher kept addressing the class “gentlemen”. “Hello!! Do you see us two here??”

At the end of the class, the teacher said that there will be some group projects and they have to be organized, but girls are good at organization so the girls can help them out. “OOOOMMMMGGG. Did he really say that???”

We are in 2017, right? I should take my DD to see Hidden Figures!! (Has anyone seen it? Was it good?)

I hope the girls will thrive in the class and can change the stereotypical perception of girls!!

The girls used to get that in robotics class. They’d usually respond (a la Beyonce) ‘we’re going to run this mother’. :smiley:

Their observation over the years boils down to the fact that the boys take their cue from the teacher-if the teacher is a misogynist and marginalizes the girls, many of the boys will follow that lead. And the opposite happens-if the teacher is inclusive and not gender biased, the boys who mouth off about girls in tech are quickly corrected (or they quit), and it ceases to become an issue in that class pretty quickly.

My D15 said Hidden Figures was very good @HiToWaMom. Take the girls to see it.

@HiToWaMom Definitely go with them to see the movie. It’s a great movie on sexism and racism, even though it must have been sanitized.

@mtrosemom Oh was it? I hear all the good things about the movie.

I want my DD to persevere and thrive in the class rather than just get upset and be hostile!
