Parents of the HS Class of 2017 (Part 1)

@MotherOfDragons I’m sorry your day is off to a crappy start, hopefully the nice weather will brighten your day!
Great idea to take pictures of kids, everyone wants pictures of their kids I think that will be a success.
That coach sounds awful, sometimes I wonder where are the good role models for our kids?
Congrats on narrowing down your list, we are waiting on too many decisions to narrow down.

Good luck to all waiting for UF admissions!

@socalmom007 congrats to your D on the scholarship!! I hope everything works out for her BF.

@CaucAsianDad … where on the FSU portal did you find the Honors acceptance…? We’re biting nails waiting to find out if the son got accepted!

@MotherOfDragons, I really like your idea of photographing children in exchange for giving a copy of the photo to the parents. It is a kind of win-win for both parties.

I have a (potentially) stupid question.

D17 scored a 33 on the act the one and only time she took it. She received a 12k scholarship to NEU. Can she take the ACT again in March, possibly score a 34, and ask for one of their higher scholarships? Is this an automatic thing (sort of like UA’s presidential) or is it a “we’ll give it to you if we like you” thing and it’s way too late to be doing something like that?

@MotherOfDragons some schools do accept later higher scores, you might want to ask them though.

Chiming in to say that I love the idea of photographing children @MotherOfDragons. In order to retain your sanity, perhaps best to schedule a block of time and have everyone arrive in intervals. This could be time-consuming.

@MotherOfDragons I was just wondering this!! Last night S found out that if his ACT score was 1 point higher he would receive an automatic $5,000 per year departmental scholarship in addition to the general scholarship that he was awarded. This would go a long way to bringing the cost down closer to our budget. But I’m not sure if it’s too late for the school to consider (by the time they got the score it would be mid-April) and I am not sure that my S would be thrilled about taking that test ONE MORE TIME!!!. I’ll ask him tonight and see what kind of response I get before I pursue it with the school.

@JenAdo

I will send you a PM with step by step instructions

Aaaah!! We’re in!!! Well, Max is :smiley:
Thank you so so much for the message and info!
And being #590 for the housing contract should hopefully have him at Landis Hall. So excited for him!!

Congratulations! My D is #262, she wants the honors dorm very badly and it looks like she will get it. She is still waiting on UF, it looks like it will come down to Honors programs acceptances.

@saillakeerie

Nope… many schools (mostly public) let you put down a housing deposit BEFORE you accept. I think it’s nuts… But my son’s top contender at the moment does this. You can get most of the deposit back if you change your mind, but will be out $50.

@MotherOfDragons I like the idea of putting stickers on the garbage can. Never seen anyone do that where I live. Technically our garbage cans belong to the trash company not us. But I doubt they would really care.

@socalmom007 Congrats on Ithaca college.

@curiositycat333 As I noted, some schools require you to accept before you accept before you put down a deposit. Some means not all so others will not. Best to check with the schools at issue.

@saillakeerie, Some schools do require that you accept in order to choose housing. AZ State U is one of them, but that does not commit him to the school. We put down the deposit and now S can sign up for housing. If he decides on another school and we notify ASU by early May we get the deposit back minus $25. It seemed like a small price to pay to get the pick of housing.

@mtrosemom Yes. I said as much 2 days ago. http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/discussion/comment/20286649/#Comment_20286649

I have been reading these posts for quite a while now and quite honestly, not feeling like I fit in. My DD was a recruited track athlete so the process was so different. She is a bright kid, but certainly not the cream of the crop like so many here. That being said, she had official visits at 5 schools and received scholarship offers from all. Made her decision early so she could sign during the early period and be done with it. She will be attending Murray State in KY on a track scholarship. :slight_smile:

@jumpermom – every kid has a talent! Welcome! What was the hardest part about the recruitment process?

@jumpermom We are all, in our own special way, misfits. Welcome and congratulations!

@jumpermom I really wanted my kid to consider Murray State. There was so much about it I liked. I just couldn’t get her to even visit. Congrats to your D!

@carachel2 The hardest part of the recruitment process was finding the right fit of not only academics, but coaching staff, teammates and ability to impact the team. Our DD handled most of the official visits on her own as they were a distance from us and the schools were flying her there. It was an amazing experience for her to grow and learn to assess what was really important to her. In the end when weighing scholarship offers she kept saying “I don’t want to make the wrong decision”. We just reassured her that her hard work has afforded her some incredible options and she couldn’t make a bad decision. Thankfully, she has not regretted her decision at all!
