Parents of the HS Class of 2017 (Part 1)

@jumpermom All you need is a kid graduating in 2017 to fit in. Welcome!

@MotherOfDragons Hope your day improved. That was a rough morning. Gave me a chuckle though.

@jumpermom - welcome!

Sports recruitment is an entirely different animal – with its own unique challenges – than the normal admissions process. Athletes get the benefit of early signing with, in many cases, almost guaranteed early admission once recruited (i.e., the coaches know how many spots they have and what it would take for the candidate to get in; they will go to bat with the Admissions, and, in many cases, the Financial Aid Committees). For that luxury, your kiddo had to have worked his/her little tail off on the field or or the court for years, have traveled all over the place for tournaments, meet the admissions criteria, etc., etc.)

Different skill set; different process; different timing. Similar stress.

@jumpermom congratulations and welcome! My D also spent much of her time in a rigorous EC, she’s not tippy top academically like some of the kids here… I didn’t even know what a NMF was until I got on here, national titles I could tell you about, national merit… no idea

@jumpermom congratulations and welcome! My DS broke his nose playing Frisbee, but he can talk about science nonstop, so each has their own niche

@jumpermom, as I’ve mentioned before, the daughter I talk about here is an academic superstar type; the one I talk about on the 2019 thread, though, not so much. (Though she has done much better this year—maybe her experience as a freshman woke her up. I can only hope.) So don’t worry—we’re a welcoming and, if I may blow our own collective horns, nonjudgmental bunch here!

@jumpermom welcome, I am relatively new on here as well but have found this to be such a wonderful group of people who are supportive, comforting and frankly pretty funny which we could all use right now!!
Congrats to your daughter what a great accomplishment. I am with @socalmom007 I didn’t know what NMF was either along with a lot of these other awards. But it is an impressive group of kiddos in all different ways

@lbf , our dogs could be twins!

@socalmom007 you have a bully too?

Yes!

@jumpermom Was fitting in part of the memo? I definitely missed it. (Personally, I am very different from the vast majority of posters on CC.) I have 8 kids who are all quite different from each other. Just jump in! Welcome!!

:x :x :x

Welcome @jumpermom ! You might also want to check out this thread started by @eandesmom for parents of B/B+ students. She also done a heroic job of keeping track admission and merit results for the participants.

Congrats on Murray State - I hear it’s a very nice school!

Welcome @jumpermom and congrats on your D committing to Murray. All you have to do to fit in is be a parent of a kid graduating in 2017 B-)

By the end of the admissions process, we will all be going through the same exact thing of buying stuff and getting ready for our kid to leave the nest.

@jumpermom, are your D a long jumper or high jumper?

D’s swim team’s senior rec is tomorrow. Our home mailbox is already decorated by the team. Her locker will be decorated too, I believe. Her poster board is done. I am so looking forward to it. The team spends $45 on each kid’s caricature. D said she’d rather have the money instead. I believe she will get blankets, towels, etc for senior gifts too. They all wear special made senior shirts with all the senior names too.

What are your senior rec traditions?

Good news in the mail today: D is a semi-finalist for the Banneker-Key scholarship at UMD!

@itsgettingreal – great news! Your D is rocking it!

We also had some good news today - D17 is an Emory Scholar finalist! She’s also a semifinalist for another school, but we’re not at liberty to disclose anything until all of the semifinalists have been notified.

@jumpermom Congrats on the track scholarship and welcome!!!

@LoveTheBard Congrats re: Emory and the super secret one!!! I think I know…
