Parents of the HS Class of 2017 (Part 1)

Love the mystery and suspense @LoveTheBard !

I hope we find out soon.

@itsgettingreal17 and @LoveTheBard great news for daughters on being a scholarship finalists!!
Super exciting and can’t wait to hear about the secret one @LoveTheBard great news!!

My S got a Trustee Scholar award yesterday so exciting news at our house too!! Though it was a safety so I don’t think it is a school he really wants to go to but feels good to be recognized.

@SincererLove DD is a long and triple jumper. She will likely end up doing heptathlon in college as well.

@LoveTheBard @itsgettingreal17 Congrats on the latest scholarship news! D did not make Emory Scholars finalist.

Good luck on the kiddos become the chosen ones!

Welcome aboard @jumpermom! I’m pretty new too!

Also not an Emory Scholars finalist here…on one hand slightly disappointing, but on the other, totally helping to clarify and cleanse “the list” B-)

welcome aboard @jumpermom please do stop by the 3.0-3.4 thread, we’d love to have you join us if you like! It’s a gpa guideline more than a rule and a great group of kids and parents all looking for the best fit for their kid but not tippy top stats or (generally) super competitive schools.

Congratulations to your student athlete!

@itsgettingreal17, @LoveTheBard congrats on scholarships. When you come out of Maxwell smart’s cone of silence, do tell us. Its getting real, since your daughter has so many fantastic options for full and partial scholarships, I was wondering if S could use the full pay one at UT?

Wouldn’t it be awesome if aid packages could be assigned? Understand it wouldn’t work at all from the schools’ perspectives.

My son had the same “swap” idea a few weeks ago. He’d like to gift an opportunity to a friend. Sweet thought but not possible. It’s more stressful on the kids than I think we realize. They are so concerned about each other. S17’s friend has many fabulous EA acceptances but the financial aspect is a hindrance.

@paveyourpath, @BigPapiofthree - I know what you mean. I’ve been loathe to say anything about USC to anyone at D17’s school, since I know that it is many students’ dream school and they are waiting with bated breath for decisions. My D17 feels the pain of her friends’ EA deferrals and rejections.

It would make for some good Monopoly-type swaps if we could trade admissions/scholarships once all the chips have fallen – or even before!

@lbf - Congrats on the Trustee’s. What school was it for?

@30socks, @vandyeyes - Sorry that your kids didn’t get Emory Scholars. Hugs. To quote @Dave_N - “Onward and Upward!”

Yay! DS got an email from Santa Clara Univ saying he’s a semi-finalist for the Johnson Scholar Program. Up for full-tuition. Essay prompt pending … not sure how challenging that is going to be. It was a surprise to us!

@phoenixmomof2 - Woo hoo on Santa Clara!

Nice @phoenixmomof2 So I guess if he wins the SC Johnson scholarship he’s really gonna ‘clean up’!

It’s funnier the second time, I think…

@phoenixmomof2 congrats, my son got the Santa Clara Johnson invite too. He isn’t thrilled about another essay, at this point he’d rather interview than write an essay, but oh well.

It seems like things are kind of in lull now while results trickle in slowly. I’m sure this thread is going to be flooded with results in a few weeks. Congrats to @itsgettingreal17 on all your daughters scholarship invites and @LoveTheBard on the mystery school, and hugs to everyone getting disappointing news. Nice to see newcomers @30socks and @jumpermom!

Congrats on the scholarship news!

Seems some WPI (EA2 round) should get released later today - good luck to those waiting. We are!

Frustrated with both D17 and S19 right now so much that I want to tell them all they have is what is in the 529 and take the rest of any money and spend it on myself and H.

D doesnt want to give up any of her weekends to attend admitted students events. Plus since she turned 18 she has gone off her anti anxiety meds and let me say it has not been pleasant. She has been short fused handling stress and people. This makes me very very concerned that college is going to be a problem. Yes I have thought about having her now continue to attend where she does Dual Enrollment , but still make her MOVE OUT.

S19 is the type of kid that could be in the running for Ivies if he put forth effort. Too smart for own good. Said to me last night that he doesnt have the ambition to do well anymore. right now he has a 3.5 UW as a sophmore. very little EC’s . AT least he could go anywhere to be a video game designer/programmer.

Good Luck @CA1543 and any one else waiting. May the odds be ever in your favor My DD is waiting too…

She got into North Easten yesterday, very thrilled for her, hopefully she will have good options

@sdl0625 -feel you pain, teenagers will be teenagers, we as parents, get frustrated

Good luck to everyone on new scholarships/awards etc. Exciting.

Very boring here. I must say I am not happy about how long it takes to get accepted, deferred, denied, waitlisted. I’d like a policy where the schools notify the kids immediately If they plan on rejecting or waitlisting them. It would make it easier to do some planning and move. Just send the kids a nice note, " thanks for trying, but no". Then the rest of them get an email, saying you are in the running- hold tight. I’d be OK with that.

@sdl0625 vibes your way with pain in the rear end kids. Not fun. About your son, I have friends with kids that are about to graduate with GPA’s around 3.5, maybe worse. Their kids got into some decent schools. The parents never stressed over their kids grades and ECs and all that. They just let the kids figure it out. A lot less stress at home, because the parents weren’t always on the kid to keep maximizing their GPA and do lots of ECs. The kids will end up fine. I don’t think that’s a bad approach. You might give up your dream of having your child get into a top 20 school, but gain some sanity back and let the kid enjoy his high school time for what it is.

Congrats @phoenixmomof2 on the Santa Clara potential scholarship! Fingers crossed! I really love that school but we were scared off by the sticker price. S would have fallen into the donut hole…good enough to get accepted, not good enough for merit money. Well done!

@sdl0625 Virtual hug to you.
Congrats on everyone’s great scholarship news. It’s fun to read about how great the 2017 kids are doing.
