Parents of the HS Class of 2017 (Part 1)

QOTD – Most likely decision in late April – won’t likely hear from one school till early-mid April according to their website. And he will most like need to visit a couple of schools over the April break. Going back to GTech next week & USC in early March for special events - excited about those. I am actually hoping that soon he can decide whether a few schools are no longer of major interest but he tends to like to keep options open as long as possible and keep us busy with various considerations!

@carachel2 thanks for the congratulations. D is extremely excited and the deposit has been paid. So glad our college quest is over! Good luck to your D on reaching a decision.

QOTD: When will you know?

D has two scholarship interviews and is still waiting for decisions/scholarships from 3 schools. One of the currently scheduled interviews is at the only school she hasn’t previously visited. My best guess is that tax day, April 15, will be decision day.

However, I’ve noticed in her prep and anticipation for the different interviews, that preferences are emerging.

QOTD addendum, if I may @Mom2aphysicsgeek, How many housing deposits will you gamble/waste?

My guess is that D’17 will have made 4 housing deposits before really deciding. With DS 14, we only wasted one deposit at U Mn TC.

QOTD: When do you think your child will make their final decision?
A: 4/30/17 ~O)

@CA1543 Don’t schools need to give acceptances by April 1st?

QOTD Addendum - we will gamble two housing deposits, both of which are mostly refundable so it doesn’t really feel like gambling. (I like this question.) Both are state schools and he needs to be in the housing lottery.

** QOTD ** I don’t anticipate a final decision until decisions are due -May 1. Too many moving parts.

QOTD - probably 04/30. Applied to too many colleges including BSMD. Sinow we didn’t do college tours, we will visit in spring break.

QOTD: I think this is going to be a nailbiter until the end, May 1st. D won’t have all her decisions until 4/1, and then I anticipate visiting/revisiting a short list of top choices. I really don’t know how I’m going to handle the stress until 4/1. So far, D is managing it well, but me, not so much.

I have no idea how many housing deposits we will send in, hopefully just 1.

@longwood – CMU website says - no later than April 15th. Hoping it is early April at the latest. Likely will put down another housing deposit soon and he should do honors app for GTech soon I think.

QOTD: When will you know?

Hmm…putting aside for a second, She who must be Obeyed’s preference, which would be having the boy sent packing to UF where Big Sis can keep an eye on him, She can swoop in if needed in under 90 minutes, and where it’s so darn affordable for in-state kids. $-)

We have GT RD coming out on 3/11. Unless we get some sort of scholarship (GT did send him an e-mail, last week, asking for him to apply to the “Goizueta Foundation Scholarship”), GT will likely be too expensive with OOS tuition.

MIT comes out on 3/14, but really, we’re not losing any sleep over this one!

So, we’re moving forward with UF, unless we’re pleasantly surprised by GT (or shocked by MIT). Everything should be wrapped up by the end of March.

Now I need to get DS17 to work on that Goizueta and UF Honors essays… 8-|

QOTD: Officially perhaps mid-April, but I have a hunch which school S is leaning towards. However I could be wrong and there are still a few decisions left out there. I don’t think he’ll wait as long as his sister did, though.

A few years ago, my D waited until all offers were in and all visits done, then decided on April 30th.

^^^ I fear that will be S17 (all acceptances in and revisiting the schools again). Only difference is he’s cautious so waiting until April 30th will be cutting it too close for him. My guess is he decides somewhere between April 23 - April 27. April 28 is a Friday and based on the way he handled apps, he’ll submit a deposit by the evening of April 27 in case anything goes wrong and he needs to contact admissions on April 28. That’s how I see it playing out here.

When will we know? Pretty much the moment we get the last financial offer. (My guess: If she gets one of the five top merit scholarships at Muhlenberg—unlikely, but not outside the realm of real possibility—it’ll be there. If she gets lottery-level merit aid at Mt Holyoke or Smith but not the Muhlenberg one, then there. Otherwise, Alabama.)

Housing deposits: We’ve put them down at Kansas and Alabama, plus an enrollment deposit (required to place a housing deposit) at Alabama. Kansas is all but out of the running, so we’re probably cancel that one soon and get most of that back. Alabama will hang in long enough, I expect, that if she doesn’t go there we lose their housing deposit (of course, if she doesn’t go there the enrollment deposit money is gone, no matter the timing).

QOTD.

Guessing April 1 ish, perhaps slightly earlier depending on scholarship results. He is completely overwhelmed with zero direction and clarity at the moment so it’s hard to picture things clearing up but I have hope (and faith). It is such an apples and oranges mix of options right now, I understand why he is overwhelmed, I am too. Pro’s and cons to each school if all monies were equal. Which of course they are not. And yet, that isn’t really helping other than making one come off the list. 6 is about 3 too many for him right now I think. LOL! Still waiting one decision though which could change things but I doubt it.

QOTD 2. We may make one deposit. Not so much for housing priority as it will not help with that but if he chooses a certain school, June orientation is mandatory and of the 3 dates available for his college only one works and I am not sure we can risk him not getting those dates. So…that deposit could happen in a couple of weeks and I need to confirm if it is refundable or not.

Congratulations to all those who received great news! I was off CC for two days and it exploded! D17 had her final interview last week. She’s enjoying fencing season - which is going well - and a tiny bit of a lighter coarse load. Rowing practice has begun so she’s been erging during free periods then heading off to fence. Needless to say she’s been sleeping well! LOL

I am trying to be cool and inquire about emails but she sees right through me so I’m just gonna keep my mouth shut from here on out and let her tell me when she has news. This will be the hardest thing I’ve ever done! This is a tough road for control freaks like me!

@Mom2aphysicsgeek QQTD No final decision until at least April. Probably not till late April. Still waiting on 4 more schools… 2 which defiantly won’t be in till mid March. No where near to making a decision. We are still deciding on if/where to visit in April. It will be very limited as my S is busy with his EC almost every weekend in April.

@Testingearly , D’s Stamps interview was intense too.

I told her afterwards…that is behavior based interview. Lol. It is tough on anyone, let alone on those poor 17, 18 years old.!! She shrugged…“If I don’t get it, it will make the decision process easier!”

With a strong lean on one EA school, she will wait until April 1st for all decisions, and see what is on merit front! Decision will be made by April 30th.

Do you lose your housing deposit if you don’t go? I might put the deposit for D’s top school so that she can get in desired house if I can get the money back, of course.

@longwood. MAY 1st is the decision date for all schools in the US. (Unless ED, or some special scholarship program.)

JOTD:
Q: What is the best thing about living in Switzerland?

A: I don’t know, but the flag is a big plus.
