Parents of the HS Class of 2017 (Part 1)

I have been reading along in spurts, so I have been liking the good news posts late. Congratulations to everyone on all the great news! Such a great bunch of kids and parents here!

Congrats to the (long!) list of students earning great scholarships and likely acceptances to fantastic schools! =D> =D>

On AP cost, luckily in Florida, the state picks up the cost, so AP, IB, AICE, etc., test are free. DS17 will be taking one AP test (Calc), and 4 AICE test (which are multi-day test).

Congratulations @cleoforshort and @nocturne21 on UCONN and all others receiving great news! D17 got her acceptance as well to UCONN–nice to have another offer on the table. It will be exciting to see the big reveal on the amount of the merit scholarship (D15 got $5000 per year, which was half-tuition at the time.)

Congrats to your D as well @chillkitty! Yes, it is indeed so nice to have options!!

I am so happy to read all the good news <:-P

QOYesterDay:

I have required D to take her AP exams in the past (homeschooler). She is registered for 3 this year but may only take 1. It depends on which school she chooses.

I can get all but $15 per test refunded if she cancels by 4/30.

<:-P @nocturne21 and @chillkitty Congrats on the UCONN acceptances!! <:-P

Congrats for all the good news!

DD was just going over her recent emails… In the last four days, at least ten schools have sent “It’s not too late!” or “I’ve extended our deadline just for you!” emails. Kentucky alone sent three in four days. Are there really still people that are saying, “Maybe just one more app?”

@stencils I’ll admit on 1/15 (which we thought was the absolute end of apps) we got a little panicky and sent 3 late-night apps. Two of them are not good fits at all for my D, and she probably won’t get accepted anyway as she has shown zero interest in them. However, one of the last-minute apps was to McGill (she was accepted), which I think is a very viable option for her. In fact, we are going to visit in a couple of weeks while she is on break. I do think that it’s probably a little too late be sending apps now, though. But, who knows, there are probably some students who are getting nothing but bad news on their decisions and would likely benefit from sending a couple of additional apps - even now, I guess especially now for some.

@nocturne21, Congrats on McGill. I have said here before, it is a great school in the best of cities. If your D wants a more sophisticated college experience, then this is the place. If she wants rah rah, and greek life, forget about it…look forward to hearing about your visit. Check out Montreal egg rolls, and they have the best pastrami sandwiches. Look up the famous deli sand which place. Can’t remember the name now.

@Dave_N @youcee @NerdMom88 @itsgettingreal17 @RightCoaster @cleoforshort @nocturne21
So much good news and congrats to you all!! There never seems to be a lull in this amazing group of kiddos.

Only 17 days until March 15th when hopefully more schools will start coming out

@BigPapiofthree Thanks! She does want the more sophisticated, artsy experience so it may be a good fit. It’s very large so I’m not quite as sure about that aspect of McGill, though. Do you mean Reuben’s or Schwartz’s?

Speaking of “Not to late to apply!” emails, D17 got one this past week from Earlham.

Which is odd, since she’s already been accepted (EA) to Earlham, with a quite nice merit package.

Congrats to @Dave_N @youcee @NerdMom88 @itsgettingreal17 @RightCoaster @cleoforshort @nocturne21 @dfbdfb and probably more!! <:-P <:-P Fabulous news!

QOYD: APs are not required or incentivized here and are $98 (school gets $5) or $15 with free/reduced lunch. I signed S17 up for 6 with the realization that he may take 0-6 of those depending on where he decides he is going during April. 3 of them would be self-study. Taking one or both Physics C exams is beneficial for getting into the honors physics track for physics majors at several colleges he applied to. He has done some physics with calculus but hasn’t taken the classes (not offered). Microeconomics is a possibility for self study, because it looks like he will be on the Econ Challenge team even though he’s only taking Macro this semester. He “just” has to read the Krugman AP textbook. AP Lit and Gov’t round out the list.

Our principal hinted that a bit of a refund on tests not taken might be possible, but the refund policy says no.

Question: He’s been told that for the UCs, he should be careful to only take credits that waive requirements or give higher placement that he wants. This is because the UCs have a cap on how many units you can earn before you are required to graduate. Has anyone heard of this at other public colleges? He’s heard there is a way around it at several UCs by registering for the surplus classes through the UC Extension office.

Trip: He’s doing an overnight at UC Berkeley now and got to meet @srk2017’s son. (And I met @srk2017!) He was happy about how his interview went yesterday, and will be done with the overnight in a couple hours.

D17 arrived safely this morning for the (HN)CBHP interview at Alabama! She texted when she landed (before i woke up—time zones and all) and is presumably sleeping off a bit of jetlag before things get going this afternoon, if things have gone according to plan.

And now we see if they can sell her on our financial safety over the next 36ish hours…

about AP tests: DD’s public school requires all AP students to take the exams, I think the fee is about $80, and you pay up front along with other fees; there is a waver for free or reduced lunch students.

DD and I went to accepted students’ “Golden Flash Day” at Kent State on Friday; she loved it!

@Ynotgo @srk2017 Looking forward to a short trip report from Berkeley if you’re up for it when you get back. Hope your kids get the Regents there, but just being invited is an honor in itself.

Will do, @youcee – and congrats again on UCSB Regents!

@Ynotgo Thanks, our son had a big smile on his face when he opened that envelope.

On the “not too late to apply emails”, I too was thinking they were a waste of time to send out to students back when they started happening in January. When I saw them last week, I was happy to see them because I’ve seen a number of students on these threads that a) applied to schools ED and are now finding out their parents didn’t realize how much it would cost and won’t pay the EFC, b) applied ED and didn’t get the financial package they’d hoped for or c) are NMF and just discovered there is significant merit scholarship money available to NMF at some schools and are now rethinking their plan. Kentucky, Iowa, Alabama and Colorado have been persistent this week but all mention merit money. Not sure why Columbia and U of Michigan were emailing but there they were.
