Parents of the HS Class of 2017 (Part 1)

@Ynotgo, congrats on Caltech!! <:-P <:-P <:-P

@CA1543 , @RightCoaster , congrats on RPI!! <:-P <:-P <:-P

My son will study Innovation and Entrepreneurship if he attends RPI, but is also interested in digital media/ game stuff. He really liked the vibe there. We’ll have to see where it all shakes out. He did not receive note of any merit $ tonight. We’ve met with a coach there and he’d let my son on team as a walk on, they had a good meeting.
Now I’m off to start wondering about the rest of his upcoming decisions this week, lol

D17 also in at RPI (she put in for mathematics) but zero info about financial aid at this point. Unless we’re missing a link somewhere, they haven’t posted her FA info yet.

Congrats to S’s of @CA1543 and @RightCoaster too!

Congrats on RPI @rightcoaster and @CA1543 and on CalTech @ynotgo!

Fingers crossed for @SincererLove’s getting good news in less than 3.14 days!

Ooh, and woo to @Ynotgo 's S on Caltech! :D/

S17 just checked and he’s in at RPI. No FA yet.

Catching up after a few days at FRC competition - the team was part of the winning alliance! First time since D17 joined that they made it past the quarterfinals! Considering the team was ranked 23rd at end of matches, ended up on the 8th alliance, they were called the Cinderella story! I apologize to all those unfamiliar with how FRC (Robotics) competitions work. But so excited for the team - they are currently flying high!

@sdl0625 Hope you get the physical fitness class straightened out - can’t imagine the stress that that is adding!

Graduation - Boys wear dark blue, girls wear light blue. Cords for NHS, Summa Cum Laude (and such), and a few other organization things. School doesn’t rank, so class president gives speech. Pretty low key all around & I’m glad about that.

Congrats @Ynotgo – Is he interested in physics at Cal Tech? Maybe he’ll have Dr. Sheldon Cooper as a prof!

Congrats on RPI and Caltech guys, amazing!!!

Yes @Ynotgo , I looked up the train ride too, very doable. They’re still holding out for UCI, UCSB, or east coast… we shall see.

@socalmom007 the train is fabulous as it removes the heavy traffic issue. Crazy how different their results are though.

@RightCoaster congratulations on RPI!!! That’s wonderful. The pickleball started a pretty great week!

It is crazy, I can’t believe the schools my daughter has gotten into with lower stats where the bf has been denied. I would never recommend for any kids to major in CS :-j

@socalmom007 — Yes, lots of students applying for CS. Dismally low admit rates. It seems to be working out OK so far for my son, but these next few weeks will tell. He is trying for dual math/CS, so perhaps that difference is helping him.

My daughter is math and has had no problems getting accepted, bf is CS and has been denied/waitlisted at 6 he thought were target choices.

@CA1543 Yup, physics at Caltech is a contender. I think Leonard would be a better professor than Dr. Cooper… :wink:

@socalmom007 – there are more males applying as CS majors. Schools are trying to even out the gender ratio, so the male admit rates are lower than female. Hope they can find a common campus they both want to attend.

@Ynotgo CalTech, wow! Congratulations!

@CT1417 There were some really high stat females in the UCSD thread that didn’t get into CS. You’d think if they were really trying to balance it there they would have been easy admits into the major. USC on the other hand seems to be a school that takes that seriously.

California publics don’t consider race or gender, but I’m sure my D17 probably had a better shot at oos schools as a girl going into stem.

Congratulations @rightcoaster @CA1543 @NoVADad99 on RPI!

Congrats @Ynotgo at Caltech! Is this a top choice?!

@youcee —sorry, should have commented that I know NOTHING about UC admissions, as my son did not apply. I guess my comments (really, generalizations!) can only apply to the private research and tech universities I have followed.

I have heard it said that boys have an advantage in admission to the LACs, but my son did not apply to those so cannot support that thought.

Wow. Cal Tech. Amazing accomplishment.

RPI, also great. Congrats to all for today’s big news…
